5 Pensions in Lombardy: Best hotel deals for 2023

April 27, 2023 Moriah Teneyck

Milan is the prime draw in Italy's most prosperous province. The Cathedral, La Scala opera house and Santa Maria delle Grazie, home of da Vinci's "Last Supper," are just some of the sights. Equally fascinating is the belle Epoque splendor of 19th-century Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. When not on one of its frequent strikes, Milan's Metro is an excellent way to explore. Renting a car opens up the region, with its towns full of Romanesque architecture and the peninsula of Sirmione and "Gardesana" coast.

At home in the Renaissance

L’Affresco is an unmatchable solution for a perfect stay in Mantua. It is located very close to the heart of the city, just about ten/fifteen minutes on foot from Palazzo Ducale, and only a few steps from the entrance to the beautiful pedestrian zone of Mantua. Yet, the street is a side street, and pretty quiet. My friend and I reached the B&B by car and were offered a ticket for free parking for 24 hours, which is a real plus. From that moment on, we just had to think how to best relax, and enjoy the many pleasures of the city. The B&B is located in a 2-storey house which is split into three apartments. Elisa, a young photographer, and her mother, live each of them in the other two apartments, respectively, which makes up for a very familiar, relaxed atmosphere. We stayed in the elegant Stanza Rossa, actually more of a mini-apartment than an en-suite room. Well furnished with antique pieces, lovely linen and a magnificent wooden ceiling, the Stanza Rossa is quite spacious and has an adjoining small studio where large fragments of original frescoes are visible on one of the walls. Large bathroom with… a balcony and a view on the cosy, silent back garden! (The view on the back garden is in fact one of the pleasures of the accommodation). Everything is immaculately clean; a perfect inside temperature and a very comfortable bed ensure a restoring night’s sleep. At breakfast, we were greeted with typical fresh sweets just bought at local top pastry shops. Delicious! We enjoyed Elisa’s lively company and her many suggestions about places to go. Elisa and her mother are the best ambassadors of Mantua you could ask for. Their love for art and knowledge of the city, as well as their participation to city events and cultural life, are outstanding. Thanks to Elisa, we were able to visit a couple of great places that were not originally on our schedule; one of them, a sanctuary just a few kilometres outside Mantua, is known mainly to locals only - a truly special place. Elisa also directed us to top food shops and to a selection of restaurants to choose among, for real flair of the renowned local cuisine; we bought excellent specialties of fresh pasta which we were allowed to store in the fridge at the B&B until we left. Perfect Wifi coverage and no TV in the room - a touch of class. The Gonzagas were exquisite hosts, weren’t they? So are some of their fellow citizens today!

Very nice place near the airport, just 5 minutes ride with the car. Barbara and her husband are nice hosts, they greeted us at the airport and offered us free shuttle from/to the airport. Which was a big plus for us specially because we left the apartment at 5AM and that was not a problem for them. The place is very clean and we had breakfast included although we stayed one night and we left very early. 100% I recommend this place.

I stayed at Casacasina for 4 nights with my wife. We had the apartment (attic) & it's like a little paradise. It's very tastefully decorated with modern furniture, TV, sofa and hydro massage shower. We had some really good night sleep. Breakfast was delicious with bread, bresaola, cheese, home made tarts & jams, coffee, yoghurts & fresh fruit. However the real highlight of our visit was Daniela. She made us feel at home & she made sure that we were comfortable & happy all the time. We are already looking forward to our next visit at Casacasina.
