5 Farms in Stellenbosch That You Shouldn't Miss

November 8, 2021 Malia Yoakum

Hiking trails and art galleries abound in Stellenbosch, but it's wine that takes center stage. More than 100 wine cellars, most open to the public, surround the oak-lined South African town, and tasting tours operate daily. Winter brings a four-day festival celebrating the local vintages. The historic town center houses the trading-post style shop Oom Samie se Winkel, the Neo-Gothic Moederkerk church, and museums dedicated to toys, military memorabilia, autos and early life on the Cape.

Goede Hoop Wine Estate

Goede Hoop Wine Estate is situated off the old road between the towns of Stellenbosch and Kuils River, deep in the valley known as the Bottelary Kloof. The old farmhouse, rich in atmosphere, was built in 1880. In 1928 the Bestbier family purchased the wine estate and today Pieter Bestbier is a third generation winemaker on Goede Hoop.

I had my 50th Birthday Party in the private cellar at Goede Hoop last Friday evening and it was a truly wonderful experience. A four course dinner cooked by the great chefs from the Hot Skillet in Cape Town combined with a full wine pairing (each couple are allowed to choose a bottle from the exclusive collection) with the guidance of Johan - the owner's son - is really to be recommenced if you are a foodie and wine fan. The farm is as authentic as it gets - if you are looking for stainless steel, glass and fancy artworks this is not for you - but if you want a real experience and to scratch below the surface of a real working wine farm then this will not disappoint. Thanks again to Johan , Pieter and team for a wonderful evening.

Polkadraai Farm

Polkadraai Farm is located in the Stellenbosch Winelands where the public can pick their own strawberries in season. There is an authentic farm stall on the farm that offers a wide range of jams, preserves, dried fruit, fruit and vegetables and so much more. Strawberry picking is a fun day out for family and friends and the farm has become famous for its scarecrows and sweet tasting strawberries as well as homemade strawberry jam.

Polkadraai Farm managed to turn something simple, like picking strawberries, into a fun and memorable outing for families or friends looking for something fun, but something different to do. You’ll find the big lush strawberry fields about 30 minutes from Cape Town – driving towards Stellenbosch on the N2 or N1 national roads. Polkadraai Farm offers various activities to keep the entire family happy and entertained, but strawberry picking is the main attraction! Filling your bucket with strawberries can take around 30 minutes, but it all depends on the size of your bucket and how quickly you can find ripe strawberries. You do not have to pick strawberries while visiting Polkadraai Farm. You can choose only to use the Food and Wine store to buy estate wines, dried fruits, jams, or other things from their extensive range of other delicious treats. You can also choose to have lunch at the food court while your children entertain themselves on the playground. There are also other child-friendly activities like tractor rides, pony rides, and mini-golf (at an additional charge).

Our family bought a half year pass for R600 in July 2020. Since then we have frequented the farm once a week for a quick hike. Today was our first time to complete the yellow route. In total it is 6.7 km and my 8 year old found it harder than the 10 year old. It was a cool day with some light showers but we were prepared with rain jackets. We enjoy a light picknick lunch at the view point and could see from Stellenbosch to Somerset West over False Bay. We even saw up to Cape Point! We were back at the car within 3 hours and it was the perfect Sunday out in Nature. From the start of the Red Route, the path was well marked and easy to follow.
