10 Top-Rated Specialty lodgings in Sardinia

April 27, 2023 Tynisha Seiler

The second-largest island in Mediterranean after Sicily, Sardinia serves up a lovely blend of sea, sand and history. Thousands of nuraghe (stone buildings) dot the landscape, proof that people have been enjoying the lovely climate here for millennia. From posh Costa Smerelda in the north to medieval Alghero in the northwest to the lively capital of Cagliari in the south, and with many picturesque towns and unspoiled sandy beaches in between, Sardinia’s got a little something for everyone.

A rip off. No value for money, uneatable food and not a 4 star at all

To be as objective as possible, let's start from the few pros. The beach is quite nice and most of the staff are extremely kind and do their best to ensure a good stay. Special thanks to Ornella from the restaurant patio (we really miss you), Morgan and Toni (Maitre and Deputy Maitre), Margherita, Alessandra and all the bar staff. The entertainment team is headed by the great Fabio who works round the clock to make guests happy. But...we paid approximately Euro 500 per day (approximately 3000 per week) to get: - a cramped room in desperate need of renovation, very claustrophobic with no window and light only coming from the front door (the "quadruple" "garden" room - where the space if for maximum 2 people and the "garden" are a few blades of grass at the entrance door). Many 2 star hotels have far better rooms; - the WORST POSSIBLE FOOD EVER. You eat far better in many canteens and we still wonder how they managed to find vegetables and fruit tasting like platic in full summer in Sardinia. Many guests complained about the quality of food and allegedly this is due to a change in the kitchen staff. However, it was totally unacceptable and it was pretty clear that they were buying the cheapest possible raw material (Emmenthal cheese in Sardinia! Frozen burgers, tasteless ricotta...); - the "thematic restaurants" are in reality inexistent. "Gusto" (supposedly their "gourmet" restaurant) is a bunch of chair next to the reception desk, with pre-heated horrible food wich is clearly made of the left-overs of the main canteen restaurant. The beach restaurant is a joke: a small barbecue with a few pieces of sausage and reallty little more on offer, a tiny salad bar and some sliced fruit. - endless queues everywhere. We had to stay in line for anything: food, drinks, beach towels, trips. The management tries to justify it with Covid-related measures. In reality, this is just due to an evident understaffing. Covid measures are a joke: sunbeds on the beach are very little distanced, there are crowdings and queues everywhere and they take your temperature only when you go to the restaurant for breakfast (apparently the virus doesn't like lunch and dinner times). Very stressful and absolutely unacceptable for this price tag, even during peak season in August; - totally inadequate reception staff. Most of them are very junior trainees who dont' have a clue about pretty much anything (and many of them are not locals, hence unfamiliar with the area); - absence of a facility manager/resort director. Many guests wanted to complain about many aspects but were redirected to junior trainees; - ridiculous organization for payments: you can only pay for drinks with the top up card you get at reception (and any included drinks are only visible on 1 card). All the rest is to be paid CASH!!! We were asked to pay CASH for car rentals (130 a day for a Opel Corsa, super overpriced), trips, horse riding, towel deposit, etc...); - the swimming pools and most of the resort facilities are very old and would need renovation. There was a terrible sewer stink coming from the children pool for most of the time (3 weeks) we were there; - the SPA is a sort of hut with plastic doors and walls where my wife had the (pricey) worst manicure and pedicure of her life; - if you don't have a car, you are in prison (and not at all a golden jail). The resort is in the middle of nowhere, there is only a small overpriced shop and renting a car comes at sky high price, with very little availability in peak season; We feel very deceived, it was a total rip off (not at all a 4 star) and definitely the first and last time we book a holiday with the Blu Serena group. Avoid it all costs. A last note: we would not recommend Calaserena to anyone, but if you are not Italian it could even be a worse nightmare, as most of the staff doesn't speak English and everything is strictly focused on domestic customers.

A lovely Sardinian experience

Reviewed By CatherineMcDo

The Hotel Rocco Sarde is visually stunning, set amongst beautiful well tended gardens and scenic rocks. We stayed in a Junior Suite with a sea view. The view from the room was magical! have never stayed anywhere with such a glorious view. Our room had a terrace, which was perfect. It was spacious and clean. We enjoyed having the lovely hotel cat come to visit us each morning too. The restaurant prepared us delicious, incredibly well presented dishes, all vegetarian as I had requested by email. The breakfasts were just lovely, eggs cooked to order, a big display of bread, cakes, cereal, fruit and cheese. The pastries were particularly good. All the staff in the restaurant were smartly dressed and couldn’t have been any more courteous or helpful. I asked to be moved to sit at a table in the panoramic terrace and the Maître d' obliged which I was very pleased about. The evening meals consisted of a buffet then two courses and dessert. The wine was very reasonable and you could save your bottle for the next evening. The entertainment at the restaurant is was very enjoyable. We loved listening to the pianist who played a range of songs, from Disney to the Beatles. We also enjoyed watching the Sardinian dancers. The pool was set amongst the rocks and nearly always quiet, with a lovely bar for drinks and tasty lunches. The staff working at the pool bar were very polite and helpful, particularly the friendly young gentleman. Plenty of sunbeds, and a relaxing area to read and sunbathe. The beach was Rene Bianca and a shuttle bus was provided to take and pick you up. The beach was the cleanest I have ever been to in the Mediterranean. White sand, clear warm water, sunbeds and umbrellas-to hire. 35euros cash or card for 3 beds and one umbrella. On the beach there is one bar, Pedros where you can buy delicious food and drinks and if you keep your receipt use their facilities. The nearest village is San Pantaleo. It’s a doable walk but remember to come back while it’s still light. The hotel was unable to ring a local taxi to the village and the cost is 50euros as they come from Olbia, so we walked instead. The village is well worth a visit. We went for dinner one night, and to the market on Thursday and had lunch after. It’s very pretty and authentic.

We chose one of the larger rooms with a balcony. The room was very clean, and cleaned daily. My hiuband does not eat breakfast and preferred a lie in but was not disturbed by the cleaners. They loaned me an iron. Fridge contents were gratis. Breakfast was continental. They did not have many gluten free options but did their best to accomodate me. Location was not sea front but you could walk to where ever you need to be. All staff were friendly and helfpful.

Recommend staying here

We stayed here for a week. The room was big enough with everything you need. The host was really amazing, helpful and kind. The best thing about this place is probably the location. You can walk to the city center in 10min and also leave the city in 10min. Bus/train station is 12 min away on foot. There's a lot of cafes around to get breakfast in the morning. Only problem was to get parking around it especially if you arrive later in the evening.
