Zizi Mekhoo Sapa Homestay

Mekhoo & Zizi Sapa Homestay always care about the life of children around the village. Most of children in Hau Thao are from poor families and not well educated since little. As a result, every day, Mekhoo and Zizi open a class held by good and kind volunteer teachers from all over the world. They are taught how to love people, to live friendly with the environment, reduce plastic products - things that Mekhoo and Zizi pioneered here. They also learn about arts such as drawing, the survival skills for living in this mountainous area. You are now playing an important role in interacting with all children during the class, so that the lesson would be more practical and interesting for them. We believe that the happiest person is the one can help others feel happy. Mekhoo and Zizi will always be here, welcoming you here to co-build the better life of this poor small village. Zizi Homestay is a great place to stay if you plan to visit the surroundings of Sapa Town. Zizi and her family are particularly welcoming, they make you feel at home. Their house is very animated, there are dogs and chickens running around, along with children playing. The decorations inside are part of the Hmong culture and you can even buy some homemade Hmong clothes and bags in their shop. From their terrace you have a wonderful view of the rice fields and surrounding mountains. The homemade food is lovingly prepared and delicious. In all the places we have stayed in Vietnam, Zizi was the only one to offer a family dinner. All tourists gather around a large table and all sorts of plates filled with food are brought. Not only did we eat very well but we made very good friends in various countries whom we already plan to go visit in the future. We have kept a very good memory of Zizi homestay and will definitely visit again during our next trip to Vietnam.

I visited riverside before the renovations and felt like the lodge back then had more charm and authenticity, with lower expectations i was not disappointed by the small things that came to annoy me, along with the much higher price tag that accompanied this recent trip. THE ROOMS: The recent room renovations have significantly reduced the room sizes to allow for a tiny ensuite (the showers were very nice though) and the "riverview" room is just a tiny window poked into the corner of your space. 2 single beds pushed together made for a big cavity in the middle and along with the single bedspread, made for an uncomfortable 1st night, untill more bedding was requested. Fixtures and fittings were nice and i'm sure the new aircon unit will be a welcome addition when summer arrives. the ground floor rooms have a lot of overhead noise as this converted stilt-house has wooden floors above you. so just bear that in mind if you come here and are expecting total silence at night. FOOD: Given that Topas banks on its inbound tourists from europe, i wasn't surprised to see a paredback menu of some set dishes offered instead of an a la carte offering whilst their numbers are low. However i was surprised when after looking at the set menu with my wife and kids and getting excited for some of these dishes, that the food that actually came out was significantly different than was written on the menu. I understand seasonality changes and the need to vary the offering but it was actually pointless looking at a menu at all, food arrived at the table with no explanation and when you are paying 1 million dong a day for food, i was expecting something a little more special. One of the kitchen staff had a cold throughout our stay and none of the staff wore masks when prepping food . The head chef arrived halfway through our visit and the chef in me was half expecting the food service to lift when he got in and started merticulously preparing an exciting looking menu for New Years Eve in 2 days time. But the alternatives-to-the-menu food stayed the same for both lunch's and dinners and remained unchecked for the rest of the stay. Breakfast was ok. pancakes/cereal/rolls/bacon/pho/eggs. there is VERY little in terms of snack options in the village, and nothing in the lodge itself, we took snacks for the kids and that definitely tied us over between main meals. Both the Mulled wine and cinnamon drinks were really nice, but not actually on the menu to buy and only served as token gestures during our stay, The food was pretty much the same as you could buy at any small restaurant in any town. culinarily i was disappointed. ACTIVITIES: Primarily we were going there to relax and chill out and the lodge is great for that. Although at times it made me feel pretty uncomfortable sitting on the deck with a glass of wine whilst watching the local 60-70 year old woman struggling to drag massive piles of bamboo across the river, all i could manage was a half hearted thumbs up whilst i shrunk back into my privilege on the balcony. one of the draw cards for my wife was the allure of a red Dao herbal bath. we both had one whilst there. The description on the brochure and the actual event were miles away from each other. If any of the "herbs" were foraged it wasn't apparent or even explained, my wife was left a little uncomfortable when her bath experience was led by a gruff local man and any notion of a relaxed atmosphere was dissolved. my bath experience was ok, but nowhere near worth the 450.000 price tag attached to this experience. We also had the "campfire memories" activity where we paid for marshmellow to roast but instead got 3 skewers of marshmellow and some dough which we were supposed to cook on the fire? the arrangement felt rushed and inconvenient. The Experience. I was kinda hoping that Topas were lifting their game with the riverside lodge upgrades and was excited to re-visit with my family and show them this beautiful place with a business that was helping tourists to appreciate, understand and participate in minority lifestyle. However the refurbishment has only served to allow larger volumes of wealthy tourists to pay inflated prices to be fed average food and sit on a balcony watching locals struggle to gather firewood in difficult terrain. I left disappointed and disheartened with the direction that Riverside has taken. It would be possible for Topas to redeem itself by: 1. VISIBLY investing more in the local village. 2. Review its F&B operation and keep it inline with what it says its producing. 3. Review its paid experiences to actually reflect what is printed in your brochure. Our 3 nights at Topas Riverside including food was almost 19 million dong, this did not include transfers from Hanoi ( Topas quoted us 8 million return from Hanoi) we found a private car for 6 million. so over 25 million for 3 nights. Lots of Work to Do.

A pleasant stay

I only spent one night here but I enjoyed my stay. The couple who worked there invited me for dinner at the inn to celebrate the ongoing Lunar New Year with their friends. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. The bed was quite firm but I slept well. The location is close to the Sa Pa center but it is uphill, which was fine for me but maybe not others. A staff member picked me up from the Hanoi bus and also dropped me off for my return. I felt very welcomed here and had everything I needed. WiFi and hot water worked well. Thank you!

Very comfortable and relaxed hostel

Reviewed By londonash27

Stayed here for 2 nights and slept so well. The beds are large and really comfortable in the dorm rooms. Every bed has curtains and a mosquito net. Lockers provided and a handy little cupboard in each bunk. The owners are really friendly and speak good English. I booked a trekking tour from the hostel which worked out considerably cheaper than I could find elsewhere in the town. The tour was well organised and fun with a great group of people. Had all of my clothes and shoes washed while staying here and it all came back within a few hours for a very reasonable price. Would definitely stay here again.
