Hakusembe River Lodge

Brutally Honest Review

Reviewed By dumeedm

My fiancé and I visited the lodge 15-18 December 2021 (Namibian Citizens). Our highlights and compliments: ◆ The lodge is truly beautiful to the eye: it's green as far as the eye can see, very well taken care of, one can see lots of thought has gone into every aspect of the lodge. ◆ Friendliest staff we have ever come into contact with during our trip in Northern Namibia. The manager Fabian, waitress Meddy and worker Paulus made our visit extra special with all the effort they went through for us. ◆ Hands down the BEST food we had during our trip as well. The chef is incredibly knowledgable and talented. Went to bed every night completely satisfied. I highly recommend paying the extra fees for dinner. Breakfast was also spectacular. ◆ We went on a sundowner boat cruise where Paulus steered the boat. It was a great experience and truly beautiful, the complementary drinks and snacks were the icing on the cake. ◆ The rooms are incredible. They are spacious, clean and comfortable. The beds were top of the range and the shower is gigantic. Each room has its own little deck outside with chairs (the staff provides you with fresh coffee on your doorstep each morning!). The rooms also had their own kettle with tea and coffee options, no fridge though. A few things to note: ◆ The lodge is NOT accessible by a sedan car during the rainy season. We were told it's possible, but with the puddles and clay sand it was a real struggle. ◆ There is not much wildlife at this lodge. If you want to visit to see hippos and crocodiles or to do fishing, I do not recommend as we were not successful in these aspects (however, please note while we were here the water levels were starting to rise. The river was quite shallow a few days before we arrived, it might be different if the water levels are higher). ◆ Since we're in the bush, insects is inevitable. Be sure to take your own insect killer spray as well as mosquito spray. We had a family of spiders breed out in the room which kept us up one night, but room service attended to this problem the next morning. We truly enjoyed our stay, definitely the perfect place to come to relax. Also a good transit lodge at the Caprivi entrance. Highly recommend.

Lovely little place

A lovely place run by Alexander, George, Maya, and Helmut the sausage dog, we did the camping, sites were nice and big some shady, they have a island bar which opens at 6, to access to bar one needs to cross a swing, sadly they only serve alcohol, no food, so come prepared. Helmund the sausage dog will look after you all he wants is a bit of vleis, really had a lovely stay there

Very early New Years night!

Reviewed By Safari55910611732

We arrived on New Year’s Eve. No efforts were made in making it special. The food was cold and there was no atmosphere or ambience. No music at all during dinner. Each couple were given a small bottles of sparkling wine to share and plastic champagne glasses.

Convenient Location and a lovely Atmosphere

Reviewed By Gisela M

Spent a night on my way up to Katima Mulilo. We took a chance and arrived without a booking, which was fine but I got the feeling this wasn't usual! So make a booking. I stayed in a chalet, which was quite convenient not to have to unpack a tent. Lovely little seating area - lots of birds and dikdiks. Breakfast was included and was delicious. I can imagine the vibe could be quite a party vibe if there were big crowds, but we had a quiet time. Well run, well kept. Would stay again.

The hosts were delightful and the place was serene and the lodgings near perfect

Reviewed By D3941VFadamh

We stayed in the cool July of 2018 with a fairly late arrival. After an excellent welcome from Ansie and Hannes, we had a drink and took an evening boat ride along the Kavango over to Angola side to find a lot of friendly locals using the river to live. We headed back to find a crocodile on the Namibian bank. We landed at camp to use the excellent facilities to cook up a feast of food we bought in an great supermarket in Rendu (60 kms west). The hosts were great with wonderful advice. All facilities available with hot water etc. Easy to find even if off the main road. Easy access. Very pleasant for myself, my wife and my two boys (12 and 8). Cabin was clean and charming.

White Sands camping is an excellent destination

Reviewed By Joris K

White Sands camping is an excellent destination when travelling through NE Namibia; with access to Bwabwata and Mahango parks, and the Kavango River/Popa Falls teeming with wildlife and all the “Okavango Specials” - birds and mammals restricted to the swamps and associated riverine vegetation - you really don’t need to visit Botswana’s Okavango Swamps, Customs and Medical officials ?. the campsites are very close to the Popa Falls, and the white noise of water rushing over the falls can dampen other ambient sounds during the flood season, but the campsites are clean, beautifully appointed with shelter, plenty of space to prepare food, electricity to grind your coffee beans and keep your fridge running, a delightful deck over the reeds, and hot water by way of a donkey!

Great rest after Bush life...

Reviewed By GilE240

Stopped here for a night after a few days in the bush. Terence was a great host with lots of knowledge of the area, its history and its people. We camped on the grass, but there are also chalets. We got light, power, and clean ablutions with hot water. The pool is lots of fun for kids anf adults. There's a great deck on the river for hanging around or for having a meal. There's a fully stocked communal kitchen for use! Bottom line - great place for a stop, great hosts!
