Patchy experience

I am going to be generous and suggest the hotel is still struggling to find an equilibrium post pandemic especially in the ‘shoulder’ season but attention does need to be given to some areas. First it doesn’t ‘feel’ like a hotel but more like a conference centre. It is very impersonal and staff, on our visit, lacked warmth. Information was hard to come by snd staff constantly said they would have to ‘check with their manager’. Second: it is not older adult friendly! Our room was in the 2nd floor of Clos . There is no lift snd requests for help with luggage were met with a blank stare . (Our French is reasonable but not fluent: we get by in France!) we ended up transporting our luggage ourselves. The room is stylish but the bath is exceptionally high and we struggled to get into it as is the bed. We are fit active healthy but also over 70 and showing some signs of age. Even a small step in the room would have helped. Third the issue of servicing the room referred to in other reviews. We did not know the policy - we were given no information on check in. When I asked I was told rooms are not serviced but coffee, towels etc replenished between 4-8pm ( seemed an odd time). This did not happen and when queried was told I’d misunderstood the information! (Blaming the customer is not, generally, good practice ). Now I have no problem with servicing/not servicing on a short stay but the lack of information was shocking. In our subsequent hotel we were given very clear info as to what would and would not happen, what to do etc so it’s not really an insurmountable issue. Another example - we twice reported issues with the lights, were twice assured it would be addressed - and twice it did not happen. It was not all bad. The concierge was very helpful indeed, staff in the bar abd restaurant were generally friendly, approachable and efficient and the food ( pizzas) were good. But I would not stay here again unless I was confident that it is more older person friendly and communication between staff has improved.

Clean, quiet, friendly, and great value. Places like this where you can get a good sleep in your own private room for a reasonable price are few and far between. Perfect location in town, walking distance to everything you need including the microbrasserie and restaurants in Rue Saint-Jean-Baptiste, the beach and to the quay via the Chemin des Soeurs, the art galleries, and even their own museum. Very convenient for hiking in the Parc des Grands Jardins and ZEC des Martres (40km drive). I will come again on my bike, as they are also certified Bienvenue Cyclistes!

Disappointment

Reviewed By yulka77

Room rating is 3, it was decent size, clean, sofa completely worn out. Restaurant is extremely bad, it has a mention of a steakhouse, the 2 steaks we ordered were not edible, house wine both white & red are not drinkable. If you are looking for ice to bring to the room, we've been told $5. My husband forgot his mask in the room and asked one at the reception, was told $1. Some Ski doo owners decided to park their equipment right in front of the patio doors and warmed it up in the morning for 15 minutes right there!!! Generally speaking, it's a place from the 1970s, staff is arrogant, except waitresses in the restaurant, they are probably trying to make up for the rest. If they don't change the attitude, they are better sell.

Cozy, welcoming stay

Reviewed By gavazzi

We thoroughly enjoyed our recent two-night stay at La Grande Maison. A large, rambling historic home, it was cozy and inviting. Even though the weather was a somewhat dismal and rainy, the charms of Baie St-Paul - with its fine restaurants, shops and art galleries - brightened our wanderings through this pretty village. The staff at reception and in the breakfast room were welcoming, pleasant and helpful. Our breakfast (included) was generous and delicious. During this time of covid, we were asked for proof of our vaccinations and photo ID's - a requirement in Quebec which was reassuring and made us feel safe and secure. We had actually planned our one week getaway to the Charlevoix and Saguenay regions precisely because of this vaccination mandate and it was gratifying to see that it was being followed everywhere. We had booked a regular room which was nice, but on the small side. It did have everything we needed, however in hindsight, perhaps we should have booked a superior room - just to have more space to lounge a little. In any case, the auberge has a comfortable spa area with a lounge and gas fireplace that was incredibly lovely and relaxing. While we did not use the spa, we did sit with our computers in the lounge near the fire and enjoyed drinks there each night before going out to dinner. The wifi connection in our room was sporadic, but was good in the spa lounge, reception and breakfast room.

Don't let the website fool you...

The photos were taken at angles to give the impression this is a cute resort off the beaten path, it is in fact a roadside motel with a few cabins located RIGHT at the intersection of the two busiest highways in the region (and the truck traffic starts very early...we are early risers, so it didn't bother us, but anyone wanting to sleep in past 7am will have trouble...). We also were not impressed with the cleanliness of the unit (despite the ongoing pandemic and heightened awareness). The sheets and towels were clean, but the rest of the unit was not...the dishes, the fridge, the bugs and cobwebs in the windows, etc.

Horrible, Outrageous, Unsanitary!

Reviewed By niks989

We arrived at the facility on August 7th. The rooms in the main building looked ok, but we were offered what they call "basic cabin", behind the house in 50 m in the woods. The basic cabin was actually an old wooden shed, previously used probably to store tools. When we asked about bathroom, we were told we need to walk to the house for this. Another more outrageous option was offered - a small wooden shack with a hole in the ground. I did not even want to touch this unsanitary "facility" so we decided to leave immediately. The rude "clerk" in ripped clothes shouted behind us "Good luck trying to get your money back".... Bottom line, if you are guaranteed a room in the house, fine, but for the "Basic Cabin" - RUN AWAY!!! I booked the trip via Hotels.com and they tried to get the property to give my money back but they refused and all I was offered as compensation from Hotels.com was voucher for 1/4 of what I was charged...
