Quirky themed rooms!

Reviewed By Sunshine28_12

Very friendly staff, great location in the centre of town, excellent breakfast. However, the rooms are each individually themed (e.g. a library, a pastor's room and some even more random themes) and some feel slightly cramped or dark because of all the extras (e.g. bookshelves with lots of books) so perhaps not a choice for those looking for a standard luxurious hotel. Also a number of the "double rooms" do not in fact have double beds (some of them have twin beds which are separated).

I booked room for business trip for me and my wife for about 109€/night. Room we got was an appartment in top floor with nice sunny balcony, huge living room, kitchen, big bed room and kids/guest room with 2 separated beds. For my wife hotel was too cold in night time in April, but for me excellent. Kitchen could be equiped better. Only one sparkling wine glass.

We 5 chaps stayed here on our last night of pedalling up the Elbe from Prague. No restaurant or even a bar, but they had a well stocked drinks machine selling most types of beer/wine etc. for very reasonable prices/. We had the "apartment" which was on two floors, had a balcony and a telly. A real Home from home, though no tea or coffee in the room. Ten minutes from the town square and centre, 5 minutes ride from the train station in the morning. The breakfast was usual continental affair with a large choice of cereal, cheeses, salami, hams, bacon, scrambles/hard boiled eggs or porridge (Yum, ham and porridge). Lovely staff. A clean, well kept hotel. No complaints. (That's a bit of a negative phrase to end, it was better than mere "no complaints" deserves).

Very nice hotel in a historic setting

Stayed here for one night on a cycle touring trip on the Elbe. The town is lovely and our hotel was situated on the main street. We were in the annexe but this was not really a problem. We had dinner in the hotel and it was really nice; friendly and helpful staff and a lovely ambience. Breakfast was good and very reasonably priced. There was parking for our bikes but not in a secure garage.

Fabulous hospitality and location

Reviewed By Amanda W

We stayed for 5 nights for a family wedding. The staff were all super friendly and attentive and nothing was too much bother, they even did our washing which was appreciated as we had been travelling for a while before we got there. Some rooms are more spacious than others, number 3 is a particularly nice corner room. It was very clean and had comfortable beds. They have a wonderful outside decked area with full meal and bar service - perect in mild weather. We opted for the German breakfast each morning of boiled eggs, cold cuts of hams, cheeses with bread rolls and jams, orange juice, tea and coffee. Scrambled eggs and bacon are also availabke. There are great nearby restaurants. This has the best location in Gardelegen as it sits on the town square so great for people watching and market place activities. Nearby the little shops are very interesting (no chain stores to spoil the ambiance) and filled with fabulous stuff with helpful, friendly shop owners. Gardelegen is a fabulous and interesting old Hanseatic, walled city with obvious town pride and definitely worth a look if travelling in the Altmark region for a true German experience.

Excursions to nearby Wendland, the Lüneburg Heath, Letzlinger Heide and Drömling are interesting pleasures. In the centre of Salzwedel, not far from the Neuperver Tor, is our country-style old town hotel, just a 10-minute walk from the historic centre of the city. Located right next to the Goethepark, the hotel is an ideal base for small and large excursions. Equipped with 33 comfortable hotel rooms, two cosy restaurants, an event hall for celebrations, a seminar room/conference hall conference room, a dedicated hotel lobby bar, a beer garden terrace and a small The hotel's sauna area. 6 modern bicycles are available for hire.

A very comfortable hotel.

We have stayed at the Hotel Union on 4 or 5 occasions in the last 15 years and have always had a good experience there. The rooms are situated on the ground, first and second floors. Request a room on the ground floor if you have difficulty with stairs as there is no lift. The double rooms have been adequate for us, although there were no tea or coffee-making facilities. They are clean and warm although a little dated. Some have pleasant views over a river to the rear. Our room on the ground floor had a very long wait for any hot water to reach the tap or shower, although I know this had not been a problem in other rooms. The road to the front is very quiet and parking doesn't seem to be a problem. The manager was very pleasant and helpful, as were most of the staff. However, there was not always someone at reception and I noticed that they didn't always respond to a ring of the bell when other customers required something. Breakfast was good, typically continental but also with a hot plate of scrambled egg and diced bacon. I got the impression that this had been left in the hot plate for some while, although it was hot and tasted good. On one morning, the staff was very elusive and it wasn't so easy to get a refill of coffee, for example. I don't know where they went, but they didn't respond to a call or even a ring of the bell at reception. On another day they forgot to put out any hot food, but some fresh scrambled egg was cooked for us on request. Dinner was amazing with quite a good choice. They were all very substantial meals and my only complaint would be that they didn't cater for people who wanted lighter ones or smaller portions. If you'd had a reasonable lunch, you might find it difficult to find something suitable on the menu. The dining room is attractively decorated in pine, but could do with a new carpet, which is worn. There were two attractive and well-stocked bars. The prices have increased over the years, but the quality is very good. I noticed on this visit that there were more events for local people, (parties, brunches, etc) and this is probably necessary when the hotel is fairly empty, out of season. There is free 24 hour wifi, on a renewable basis, but I had problems connecting to it.

Slightly disappointing

Reviewed By NemoTraveler

We stayed two nights on a road trip to Germany. Havelberg is an former Hanseatic city, today a rather small town, located in the northern part of Sachsen-Anhalt (Saxony-Anhalt). It is situated on the River Havel, not far from the River Elbe, and the town centre is well preserved. The hotel has 34 rooms and is located a couple of kilometers outside Havelberg on hilly grounds with a nice view of the surrounding area. The hotel is modern and with several sculptures and paintings, which is a nice touch. Covid 19 regulations were handled nicely by the staff. We had booked a Superior room. It was located in a separate building on the first (ground) floor with a nice, small terrace with a table and two chairs. However, due to the hilly grounds, the entrance of the building was on the second floor, and we had to carry our luggage down (and later up) the stairs, as there was no elevator. Our room was of decent size, and the beds comfortable. A safe was available, but no coffee making equipment and no A/C in the room. We found some crumbs in the chairs, which had not been thoroughly cleaned, but apart from this the room was reasonably clean. The hotel Wi-Fi was slow and not up to modern standards. We asked about this issue at the front desk and were told that this was due to an inadequate capacity in the main net outside the hotel. Hopefully this issue will be solved in the future, as most guests would probably expect good Wi-Fi. Our rate included breakfast which was good, alas not excellent, and we noted a rather slow restocking of some items. The rating reflects the price we paid for our stay, and based on this it is just average.
