Clean, friendly hostel with good vibes :) really good location and price for where it’s situated. Also really helpful to have car parking so central in town + a good selection of books/board games to entertain!

Good location

Fantastic location so could walk into town. Car parking was a bit challenging as there is very limited space. The room was small and basic with good kitchen facilities. We had a room with a private bathroom and toilet which was great.

I've written an awesome review for this place once but this time it wasn't as good. Mainly because I think the room smelled like bbq because of the outside restaurants even though we had the windows etc closed. It was also super bothersome chatting or calling to turn the aircon on and off every time we needed. Guessing sometimes the phone is not manned so you have to wait 10-20 mins for your request to be met. The rest of the stay was okay, it really is just a budget place to stay but I guess for it's price it is okay :)

Awesome backpackers in the heart of Queenstown

This backpackers really made our winter stay in Queenstown very memorable. We stayed in one of the second-storey family rooms with fantastic views of the Remarkables. The room was always warm with comfy beds, plenty of storage space and a fridge. A few things stood out for us: very helpful and friendly staff (nothing was ever a problem), very clean bathrooms, clean kitchen with plenty of cutlery and crockery, free meal on Wednesday night, free bike hire (quality bikes!), spa and within walking distance to all major attractions in the town. I'd highly recommend this backpackers!

'Best in class'

Reviewed By lisamI6489CT

We stayed here for a night before a tramping (hiking) trip in one of the newly renovated self-contained A-frame chalets. Highly recommended! Still retains the rustic charm of the original but with modern touches like new carpet, Nespresso machine, and an efficient heater which doubles as a Bluetooth speaker. Great base either for exploring the area or a 'launching pad' for an onwards trip. Come sufficiently provisioned though: at the time of writing (after two years of closed borders and in the middle of Omicron), the cafe and restaurant are closed. Makarora Country Cafe is 5km up the road though.

Chalet Backpackers

Very unwelcoming

Reviewed By WillEquj

The facilities are alright and reasonably clean, but the living room was locked at 9pm, the kitchen at 10pm, with no common area left to hang out. There were only two people in my dorm and they decided to have both of us on the same noisy bunk bed for some reason. Generally unwelcoming impression topped up by the "you can do it!" poster for the 10am checkout time. You get what you paid for, you pennyless dirty backpacker.

One of the worst customer service experiences ever

Reviewed By YorkshireKiwi316

Having made an online booking & arriving on an evening flight, I arrived at On Top Backpackers with no idea what I was about to experience. Having got to the accommodation around 10.30pm, I discovered it was all closed & no-one around & a sign with a number & a rather grumpy request not to call it unless urgent. Since I had a booking & no way of getting to my room, I called it. I immediately apologised to the person on the phone, saying I had come in on a late flight & had caught the first shuttle to the CBD & was sorry I was late arriving. I was met with a grumpy tirade telling me I should have called them. Despite apologising that I hadn't done this, I still said that I think it was reasonable to expect a courtesy call to ask if I was still coming. I was told "This is a backpackers, not a hotel." Clearly, they had no record of my booking, as they had to ask me to provide the info about the room I had booked & had no information about it & after receiving a fair bit of abuse for being late, I was told they would charge me a call out fee to come to give me access to my room. At this point, as they were essentially refusing my service, I declined & said I would find somewhere else...which I did (Motel on Carroll - see separate review) & experienced a totally opposite & excellent customer service approach. There is nothing to commend On Top Backpackers at all -they charge not hotel prices, not backpackers & don't cater for late night arrivals, which you'd expect with backpackers.

Very good place

It was a home away from home for me for approximately 2 months when I was doing my summer internship in Cromwell. The room that I was in consist of 4 single bed with comfy mattresses which is what you need after a long day, and a large dinning area and lounge. the kitchen has everything you would need to make your meal and the bathrooms are always cleaned. It also has a washing machines and a dryer. Its a new building in a beautiful neighborhood settings. the owners (Lynette and Mike) were very kind, I cant thank them enough. They treated me as a family during my stay, not a guest. Thank you L & M. This place is a 'go to' when you are in Central Otago as a group or individual.
