Within an hour of arriving at Chrysoula, I wanted to give it a 1-star review – first impressions were not good (but keep reading, it does get better!) The sign to reception points to a building that is no longer in use, only by luck did I stumble upon a man who informed me you must check-in at the pool bar now. For the price, I was prepared for a basic room but what I got was at the very bottom end of what I would consider acceptable. The bathroom needed a deep clean (a faint but unmistakable smell of urine lingered), air conditioning – an extra €5 per day (only mentioned in the small print on Booking.com) – was weak: I took to detaching the electricity fob from the door key so I could leave it on while I was at the pool, otherwise it took so long to chill the room it wouldn’t have been worth paying for. The bed was firm, though not quite the least comfortable I’ve slept in. Also, I stayed for 4 nights and my room was only cleaned once - luckily I'm not a messy person, but fresh towels and emptying the toilet bin more than once would have been nice. So, those are the negatives. Are there any positives? Well, yes actually. The pool is as big and fantastic as it looks in the photos (I’m a swimmer and it’s a real luxury having a full 25m pool at any hotel). Breakfasts are better than I was expecting with cooked to order pancakes, bread, toast, Greek yoghurt with honey, full English if you want it – just order at the bar and they bring it over to you. The staff are very friendly and do seem to try to give you a pleasant experience. Cold drinks at the bar are VERY cold (nothing like an ice-cold beer in the afternoon), though a tad expensive at €3 a can, when you can buy the same for €1.50 across the road. The location is okay: a supermarket is just opposite and the beach is only 150m past the supermarket. The closest tavernas are 5 minutes’ walk, though if you want more variety, it’s 15-25 minutes to get a selection of places. There is also a bus stop just to the left on the main road, useful for getting to/from Kos Town or other places on the island. In the end, I settled on a 3-star rating, because despite the efforts of the staff, the breakfasts and the pool, the rooms really need improving for it to deserve being called "very good". It wasn’t a lot cheaper than I’ve paid elsewhere - especially with the air conditioning charge added on – and it’s hard to feel like it’s great value for money.

Mayflower 1

Requires TLC

Reviewed By Martin S

Arrived at Mayflower from Leros ferry at aprox 5.30pm Sunday 8th. No welcome as such, no docs checked, just told key was in door of room No.3. Room was pretty much exactly as we left it 9 years earlier! e.g. no upgrade to decor, same old short shower curtain that floods bathroom. No dessert spoons or forks in kitchen! We pushed the separate beds together and every other day they were moved back?! Toilet rolls ran out and we had to buy our own. When my wife pulled the curtain back the whole rail was not fastened on one side, so came down. Weve been visiting Greece for over 40 years and much of the accommodation used to be very basic but times change and much that was basic decades ago has been brought upto better standards but sad to say Mayflower seemed as though the owner just wanted to eke out his money without improving the place. As I said previously, nobody spoke on arrival but the second day whilst napping early eveing before dining out, the owners son knocked on the door asking for the 'room tax'. The bar was pleasant but each evening on returning to it for late drinks the owners son & girlfriend had a local tv soap on so no joy there either. The location was as described, good and the pool was inviting just overall unchanged in nearly 10 years. It wasnt the worst place Ive stayed but definately needed modernising & a little care & attention with just a thought by the owners as to what little things make a holiday pleasant. We will not visit again.

Perfection

Reviewed By simoneh410

Our first time in Kos to attend my daughter’s wedding at a nearby resort, so we didn’t know what to expect. We booked three apartments here, all were spotlessly clean with everything that we could need and wonderful sea views. After 4 days here, I suffered a back injury which left me incapacitated. Denise called the Doctor for me and visited me with snacks and coffee. Her kindness and compassion went over and beyond what I could’ve ever expected. She also moved me to a ground floor apartment to make mobility easier. If you want a true taste of Greek hospitality, come here. Food is fresh and great value. Denise, her husband George and their entire family make you feel so welcome. I am so desperately unhappy to be leaving here but I am doing so more relaxed and with a smile on my face. Oh, and we will definitely be back! Highly recommended!

Just back from an excellent two weeks at Christina's Studios. They are in a quiet location but only 5 minutes from the beach and bars/restaurants along the front. The studio was basic as you would expect in Greece but better than a lot we have stayed in. We got a kettle, table and chairs inside as well at outside plus a wall safe that on our booking was included. The studio was cleaned regularly and towels/bedding changed plus we loved the little touches like leaving us home made biscuits and a flower or two. Although Christina speaks little English we managed to communicate. Would definitely use again.

Autumn escape to Kefalos

Reviewed By davidalan14

This is my 3rd visit to Kefalos, both previous accommodations being hotels and Kos Island Studios surpasses all previous experiences with flying colours. Firstly, we were originally booked to travel here late April which for obvious reasons was cancelled and I was delighted to hear proactively by email from Barbara about the options available regarding our deposit and we confidently postponed to a later travel date which took place early this month with the existing deposit already in place for part payment which is a relief when rearranging flights and accommodation. Barbara picked us up late at night at Kos Airport on arrival and promptly checked us in explaining the facilities both on site and in Kefalos/Kamari Bay.We were also welcomed by Rex their “watch dog” who became a firm friend immediately! Breakfast next morning and for the remainder of our 12 days visit was truly amazing with an ever changing homemade daily special each day eg spinach pie, chick pea fritters, croque madame, all served alongside fruit and yoghurt, cereals and a platter of meats and cheeses with unlimited juices and hot drinks meaning lunch was out of the question! In fact if they offered half board then we’d definitely be interested! Our studio was on the upper level as requested decorated in a bohemian style with some lovely little touches such as a welcome tea/coffee selection with homemade cake, complimentary shower gels and free air conditioning which most other properties charge for! Housekeeping took place every second day with a change of towels and bed linen as well as a thorough room clean. The beach and harbour side are only 5 minutes walk away where we dined out at the multiple restaurants almost daily though we did cook dinner twice in our studio after long day excursions to the neighbouring islands of Nissyros, Kalymnos and Pserimos which are really worth seeing after you’ve seen all that Kos has to offer. Barbara recommended Kefalos Car Rentals on the main road and this proved to be the cheapest at a mere €19 per day including insurance so we could see as much of the island as possible including historic Old Palia, Zia, Asklepion, Kos Town and Therme where the sulphuric hot sea water is a tonic. Sadly excursions to Bodrum, Turkey were not available this visit due to the CV situation there. Kefalos offers a very relaxing holiday with a perfect climate at this time of the year which is why we chose to return here for an autumn escape and with the superb levels of hospitality offered by Barbara and her parents Poppi and Vangelis this makes for the perfect destination when there are so many difficulties elsewhere on the tourist trail around Europe. We wouldn’t hesitate to return to Kos Island Studios at our next travel opportunity and sooner rather than later. Yamas! ??

Fabulous clean and quiet apartments

Reviewed By home-improver

We recently stayed in room 7 at the Vasilis Studios 2 for 2 weeks and we were delighted with our room and facilities. Kitchen equipment is extremely basic but we only prepared breakfast at the studio as we ate out for all our other meals. The owner Vasso is a really lovely lady and she works hard to keep the place spotless. Our room was cleaned, the beds were changed and we had fresh towels every couple of days which we found completely acceptable. Room 7 has a window above the beds and it has a gorgeous view of the surrounding countryside. If you open it and open the balcony doors at the same time, you get a great breeze in the room which is very welcome when the temperature is high outside. Air conditioning and the safe were included in the rental price of the room. We were thrilled about that as everywhere else where we've stayed in Greece (and we've stayed in dozens of places on different islands) we have always had to pay extra for these facilities so it was a nice surprise. There's also free Wifi and a free T.V. in the room. The studios are situated on a quiet back lane so they're peaceful. The cockerels are a bit noisy but just close the windows and doors. After all you are in a countryside area which is really nice. You can easily access all that Kefalos and Kamari Bay have to offer. The beach is about 10 to 15 minutes walk away and it's an easy walk, no hills to walk up. We would stay in the Vasilis Studios 2 at any time and we are happy to recommend. them.
