Long Point Eco-Adventures

Missing the Mark and not really ‘Eco’

Reviewed By Tara H

Long Point Eco-Adventures is a wonderfully situated property. It has great access to hiking and mountain biking trails and a very nice view of the marsh from the restaurant and the boardwalk. We stayed for three nights in one of the Elite Pods. The Elite Pods are much more expensive than the other pods I'm assuming because of the Queen-sized bed and private shower. Please see my comments on the Elite Pods below. I'd like to offer some constructive feedback for the owners. I think this property and management team has great potential with some adjustments. The first recommendation would be to improve the cleaning regiment a bit. The pod itself, when we arrived was not overly clean. The top of the fridge, the floors and the fan were dusty (particularly the fan...that really needs a good cleaning). Also, there was, what I assume to be dog hair on the bed. The second recommendation would be to improve site/pod maintenance. When we arrived, one of the bolts on the toilet seat was completely missing. This was obviously a problem and I imagine would have been obvious to the last staff member who had cleaned it? Anyway, we let staff at check-in know on Friday night and they said no one would come to fix it until Saturday. When staff came by Saturday, we asked if they were coming to fix it, but they didn't know anything about it, they were dropping by firewood. We told them about the issue. It wasn't until much later that day that when we flagged down a third employee that it was dealt with and then fixed. In addition, the keys to the pods are VERY sticky and difficult. It seems as though the door knobs and/or keys could use replacing. The third recommendation would be for improvement to procedures/feedback with staff. In addition to the toilet seat issue, we had trouble opening our door with the key and had to get someone from the front desk. We then somehow didn't unlock the door properly and locked ourselves out. The main desk seemed to have trouble finding a replacement key. It's fairly common for people to lock themselves out of hotel rooms, etc., I think it would be good to improve policies around this and be prepared for this eventuality. The fourth recommendation is around sustainability. This place is advertised as an 'Eco' adventure but there were some questionable sustainability practices. The site is lovely and has tremendous habitat for birds, turtles and other animals. However, it seems as though the kindling being brought to each pod or tent is scrub from the property. In addition, I saw other guests walking through sensitive habitat, grabbing grass and twigs and putting them in their fire pit. I think that it would be good to have better signage/awareness around avoiding impacting the environment as much as possible. In addition, our friends in a neighbouring pod had no recycling bin in their pod. The fifth recommendation would be the design/layout of the Elite Pods. The Elite Pods have a Queen sized bed right when you open the door. In other pods, it is at the back beside the shower. This awkward placement of the bed makes it very difficult to manoeuvre in and out of the pod. And there was no table inside or outside of the pod. I think some 're-imagining' of the layout and design would make a great improvement. While we overall enjoyed our stay, we really felt that with the price of the Elite Pods ($340 a night with tax on a weekend) should have meant that we had a very clean room with intact toilet and great service. We felt those things were lacking and if we did return, we certainly would avoid booking an Elite Pod, it was not worth the price for us.

Disappointed

Terrible customer service. Beware of the old switch-a-roo We booked 4 sites for a total of 9 family members (all over 50) for 10 days, 4 months in advance, @$2400 total cost. I called 4 days ahead of our arrival and were given 4 site numbers that were together, which we felt we could arrange ourselves to our liking. Very happy so far, right?. Upon arrival, we were give 3 of the 4 sites originally assigned, the 4th, (currently vacant site) assigned to the 3 seniors in our group, were moved to a muddy site halfway across the campground, down a hill, behind the washroom building. The nice young lady at the desk remembered our conversation and apologized. We asked for the manager. Soon after, the manager showed up and gave us some bulls#it story about having to rearrange booking due a storm that occurred a week earlier. She refused to accommodate, alls we were asked was to have our sites as previously assigned. . Not a pleasant experience, completely ruining a much anticipated post-covid family reunion. Post-stay review. Positives.... Most sites were adequate, reasonable sized, level, grassy and somewhat shaded, a few were a muddy mess, but they seem to be working on it. Pool was nice. Washrooms clean. Sites were diligently checked and mowed as they were vacated. The young staff were friendly and helpful. Nice area for biking or walking along the river. The not-so-positives.... Water pressure on sites were very low, we had to fill our fresh tank and use the pump to get consistent water pressure, washroom water pressure was also very low, showers were at times little more than a dribble. Power was inconsistent, my bulldog monitor was constantly showing an alarm, it never showed more than 117 volts and went as low as 107. Water lines on some sites had been dug up and not refilled, leaving large dangerous holes (we placed a picnic table over it after one of the seniors about fell into it). The dump station if right out side the washroom door, can get pretty ripe in the area. Oh ya, the manager/owner....we'll just leave that one alone. In the end, we tried to make the best of our reunion/vacation, cut it a day short, never to return.

WILD EXODUS - FALSE ADVERTISING! $200/NIGHT TENT CAMP SITE SOLD AS BED & BREAKFAST

Reviewed By 428attilav

I booked what was advertised as One Bedroom Chalets, were actually shabby cabins and our two Deluxe Queen Suites, were ripped tents, holes everywhere, mosquito infested, no running water, no bathrooms. I paid $1,684.80 for two nights expecting a classy Bed & Breakfast. We left after one night as we were not going endure another night of being chewed alive by mosquitoes. This is false advertising, fraud and false pretenses. This should NOT have been advertised as Bed and Breakfast when atop of the $200 per night tent accommodation fee, they wanted an added $25 for breakfast. I will be filing complaints with every agency and authority that governs business, commerce and lodging. I would NEVER have booked and agreed to pay $200 per night for a tent. This is a scam operation. Extremely angry as my corporate executives had a horrible experience, camping, instead of a proper Bed & Breakfast. Absolutely criminal! This is a camping site, not a Bed & Breakfast! NEVER, EVER go here and I demand a full refund!

This is a vintage motel (70+ years) set in lovely wooded grounds. While it fronts onto the highway my room, which was at the back, was lovely and quiet. The room was comfortable, clean and reasonably spacious with a good bed. There was a small fridge as well as satellite TV.

Merland Park Resort gets five stars !

Traveling with friends in their new RV we were involved in a terrible accident that left the RV undrivable and our group without a place to stay. As it was the last weekend in August most places were fully booked or were not willing to give us even a portion of the weekend between bookings. Until we called Jennifer at Merland Park. After explaining our situation Jennifer said she had single night openings between guests and happily welcomed us to her family's resort. During our three-night stay, we stayed in a beautiful three-bedroom cottage, a pool suite room, and the motel area of their resort. All rooms were clean, had all the amenities, and were located in well-groomed grounds at the lakeside resort. During our stay, we met many people, families that told us they'd been coming to Merland Park for many years! Certainly, we will be back and highly recommend Merland Park Resort if you are traveling to the Picton area! A big thank you to Jennifer and Kevin Lavers and their family, wonderful, friendly, and kind people that take pride in their resort and it shows!

Great place to relax and enjoy the nature

Amazing location. The cottage, by the beach, clean and beautiful. The cabin itself has everything you could need ... pots, pans, BBQ, etc. Perfectly setup. Right on the river, the view is magnificent and very serene. Water is clear, no weeds to step on or rocks. Algonquin park is only 20 mins away. Beautiful area. It is definitely a place to relax and enjoy the nature. The owners, John and Simona, are just great. We will definitely go back again.

Great relaxing stay

Stayed here in cottages 2&3 for a week in August 2017. Nicely maintained property, very welcoming management. Cottages are clean and well equipped, view from the deck was just wonderful. Their beach is great, I've enjoyed canoe rides very much, there's a lot to see nearby. Kids had a blast too, fed chipmunks, ran around, played badminton, not to mention smores and the campfire. We went for a few hikes in Algonquin, fantastic as always. Not so great for fishing though, the lake is sort of dead in this department, it's acidic.

Definitely AVOID staying at the offsite chalet accommodation of wilderness tours

Reviewed By Tiramits

We paid $518 for 2 nights stay at the off site chalet of wilderness tours. The chalet was called Jerry. I recently gave the high adventure rafting by the same company a 5 star review but am giving the offside chalet accommodation a 1 star review. We reached at 10 pm. It was a nightmare reaching the place. There were no signs to follow and it was pitch black. After driving around for 40 minutes in different narrow roads mostly in complete darkness, we somehow managed to reach the chalet. 5 meters outside of the chalet, it was pitch black. I felt as if we were staying in a place from the movie Friday the 13th...because it is located at the old location of the tours - which has now been abandoned - and the old buildings are still there but completely empty and dark and spooky in the moonlight. The chalet had some large spiders and insects crawling around and cobwebs on the ceiling. My son suffers from arachnophobia. We debated the situation and decided to leave. We fortunately managed to get a last minute booking at the holiday inn at Pembroke around 35 min away. So complete waste and rip off of the $518 that I paid for the 2 nights. The website has beautiful photos of the chalet and very nice description. I booked based on that. Unfortunately, reality was different. I don't know the quality of the onsite accommodation but during the visit for the rafting, it was clear that onsite cabins were at least located in a very well lit area, which is saying a lot compared to where the off site chalets were located. The off site chalet is definitely not for families and it's grossly overpriced. There should be some reasonable correlation between the photographs and online description compared to the reality of the chalet quality.
