Theatre Royal Hotel

The Theatre Royal has been lovingly restored and now features six themed rooms with adjoining en-suites. Five rooms are upstairs whilst one accessible room is located downstairs. Each room is unique, featuring a blend of Victorian decor and antique furnishings, while featuring all the modern amenities you would expect from a great hotel. The hotel includes a great restaurant and cafe, with your favorite West Coast brewed beers as well as a fine selection of wines and spirits.

A credit to the owners - the hotel has been restored to its former glory.

The accommodation - Miner's cottages are excellent and well-priced. We decided upon the Seddon Suite and to be frank it was a mistake. Whilst impeccably- decorated in period fashion it was a little dark and gloomy. They also lack a couple of basics - a microwave and heated towel rail. In hindsight we would have booked a miner's cottage.

My friend and I stayed in a 2 bedroom cottage at Amberlea before starting the Wilderness Trail. It was a lovely place to stay. Very comfortable and clean with everything we could possibly need. Great location with a nice walk into town to restaurants or the beach. The owner who was mowing his lawns was very friendly and helpful with local knowledge.

Needs Updating

Arrived at 2pm to find out doors were locked till 3pm so had to wait for checkin. Lady was welcoming and showed us to our room. The room was very tired and needed updating. 1970s box tv on the wall so high up almost got a kink in my neck. The roof paint was peeling off and there were spiders in most corners. Furniture very old and stained. Spiderwebs around windows. Latch on bathroom window so corroded couldn't close.. Couldn't regulate water in shower. The shhets on the bed were thin and towels could be updated. The motel block was back off the road so was very quiet. Give it a good clean and coat of paint and it would be great. Had dinner at restaurant. Fantastic meal, huge roast. Staff were so pleasant and couldn't falter. Great atmosphere.

Exceptional comfort

Reviewed By DublinBrenda

Our one night at Awatuna Sunset Lodge was at the very end of our 11 day tour of the South Island, and we only wish we had come earlier and stayed much longer. This is our most outstanding memory of the whole trip - the warmth of the welcome, the comfort of our lodging, the peace and beauty of the location, and the amazing home cooked cuisine. Elizabeth and Selwyn open their home and their hearts to their guests, starting with sundown drinks and canapés, followed by a home cooked meal by Elizabeth, masterfully prepared with ingredients from their own garden or locally sourced. The hot tub in the garden overlooking the Tasman Sea at sunset is a special luxury. Overall, our time here was exceptionally peaceful, relaxing and comfortable, and our warmest memory of our time in New Zealand.

A wealth of treasures

Reviewed By nzkbooker

My family enjoyed our stay here. We had the four poster room with bunk beds and ensuite, all of which was clean and comfortable. I slept very well and had a lovely shower in the morning, what more can you ask for? The victorian/edwardian furntiure and fittings made for a unique experience and I enjoyed explaining to my children what all the old antiques displayed around the premises were used for. Lester was a friendly and obliging host, he even posted my son's forgotten headphone cable back to us with no charge. I would definitely recommend a stay here if you are open to something a little different from your average bland motel.

Relaxing and most pleasant rural stay above Hokitika

We were welcomed by the friendly, obliging host who lives onsite. Our studio room was spacious, light, modern, well maintained, with tasteful quality decor and spotlessly clean. The view from the unit is relaxing and calming. Alpacas, cows and sheep are visible from the unit with the Tasman Sea in the distance. The sunsets were magnificent. An onsite restaurant provides a range of dishes with generous portions. This is high recommended high quality accommodation.
