10 Top-Rated Bed and Breakfast Inns in Martinique

April 23, 2023 Osvaldo Hartline

This Gallic toehold in the Caribbean exudes a distinctly French air, enticingly spiced up by West Indian warmth. Local culture and cuisine combine both influences. The stylish isle is dominated by Mount Pelee, which destroyed the city of St. Pierre in 1902. Black sand beaches and rainforests are found in the north, with yet more beautiful sands to the south. Sights include La Pagerie, birthplace of Napoleon's Empress Josephine, and Diamond Rock, a 600-foot pinnacle, once registered as a British warship.

Hotel Pelican

Perfect experience

Reviewed By johandalgaard

We spent a week with our two children, and my wife’s parents in an adjacent room, so we experienced both the family room and the ocean side room. It’s one of the cleanest, nicest, friendliest and best situated hotels we have ever visited in many years of travelling. The pool is charming, the beach 30 seconds away is clean and not crowded, with decent, small restaurants. Proximity to Fort de France, supermarkets and the airport adds to the charm of this place. Parking is easy. Oh, and there was even free laundry. Highly recommended!!

Don’t book if you need to arrive before 5 PM

Reviewed By JeffBBoston

When we arrived there was a locked gate and the proprietor came out when the driver rang. We knew we were early, so we asked to drop our luggage so we could go have lunch and walk the town. Maybe then sit by the pool for awhile? Instead he refused to open the gate and said, "Come back at 5!” We explained that we had four heavy pieces of luggage. Literally our only choice would have been to sit on the curb for six hours watching our bags and waiting for him to open the gate. Instead we went to another hotel. Then he refused the booking site’s attempt to cancel the reservation. I don’t know what this place is like when you arrive in the evening, but I know you shouldn’t book here if you need to arrive any earlier.

More a Hikers' Refuge

Reviewed By Chris W

This is more a hiker's refuge than a hotel. Set between the sea and the mountains near St Pierre, there are good black-sand beaches very close and good restaurants on them in Le Carbet. However the on-site restaurant 1643 is under separate management and is pricey. There are derelict buildings on the site. Our second floor room had no balcony (although one was promised by Hotels.com) but we were offered access to the shared balcony below. Shutters but no windows, so trying to avoid mosquitoes by not turning lights on meant early nights. Pillows and towels were poor. Described as "spooky" by my wife, but it does offer rooms in this interesting corner of Martinique (don't miss the Gauguin Museum next door).

Hotel La Galleria

Best Choice Near Airport

Reviewed By Dave1337

On the night before our return from a week's vacation on Martinique we chose Hotel La Galleria due to its proximity to the airport and easy access for an early morning departure. As it turned out, a storm at home unexpectedly resulted in canceled flights to the USA, so our one night stay was extended to two. The hotel is immaculate, occupying the first two floors of a high-rise apartment connected to the Galleria, an upscale, very American-looking shopping mall. Our room was spacious and well-appointed, beds comfortable, and bathroom clean and bright. The included breakfast was a fairly predictable assortment of fruits, rolls, yoghurt, coffee, juice, etc., but ample. One downside is there is really nothing else around the area except a McDonald's across the street and the mall which has a few food court-type eateries and one true full-service restaurant, Hippopotamus, that is apparently where families go for supper after a day shopping at the mall. Do check out the enormous supermarket on the lower level as a restaurant alternative. Staff was extremely friendly and certainly more fluent in English than we were in French. The hotel is indeed a short and affordable taxi ride from the airport, but a bus rapid transit line set to open in spring, 2016, should provide an even more economical alternative. Local buses to and from Fort de France are frequent and inexpensive, and easy to use, stopping right across the street. The hotel does have good in-room wifi, but no pool or exercise facility. For anyone whose flight to Martinique arrives late at night, or departs early in the morning, this hotel would ben excellent choice.

Airport Hotel

Cannot recommend

Reviewed By Simplerrviews

We stayed here for one night as we had come off a boat and were waiting for an onward plane journey the next morning. There was another couple on the boat who had an earlier flight then us, so the four of us arrived at this hotel, as it was described as "airport hotel". We spoke to two people in the reception and asked if it was possible for 2 of the 4 of us to shower whilst the other 2 paid for the room and stayed the night. We were told this was OK, I paid for the room, one member of staff took all of the bags to the room and the other booked a taxi for a few hours time for two people. Two of the group showered, the taxi arrived and all seemed well, until an older lady arrived. I presume she was the owner as she repeatedly shouted she was "in charge", she was clearly upset that we still had the room. She kept leaving and coming back to us, still shouting at us in French (a language we didn't understand). She demanded to see our passports, which I gave her and I explained that I had paid for the room and that this had been ok'ed by two members of staff. She continued to shout at us, i tried to ask her if she could book us a taxi but until she refused, eventually she left. If she had said there had been a misunderstanding with the other two members of staff in a calm and professional manner we would have just paid for another room, but her attitude and customer service was appalling. The room itself had a clean bathroom (shower only), with one soap, no shampoo etc. There is a vent in the bathroom which isn't fully attached to the wall, so mosquitoes flew in and out freely. We thought we'd just close the bathroom door to keep them at bay, but there is a two inch gap where the door doesn't fit the frame properly. There was a fridge, aircon unit and TV (French channels only) in the bedroom. There was no wifi. We kept two cans of coke in the fridge overnight and in the morning they were warm, so i dont thibk the fridge worked properly. The hotel is situated near a very busy road, so there was alot of traffic noise. At 9am the hotel staff decided to begin maintenance work on the room next foor, which involved drilling holes on the shared wall. We saw this as a sign to leave. We went to the reception and a male member of staff ordered a taxi which arrived in 20 minutes. I cannot recommend this hotel as we have paid less for better in other spots around the Caribbean.

Nice bungalow-type accomodation

Reviewed By DeReuf

Lovely accomodation near Le Diamant and on short driving distance from Grande Anse d'Arlat and Les Trous-Ilets. Anse Bleue offers bungalow-type lodging in very simple equipped cottages. It has a nice pool and a small bar-restaurant. The menu in the restaurant is not very extensive and for breakfast I recommend going to nearby Bakery 'Boulangerie Le Rocher' . The staff is very friendly and do their best trying to speak English. We enjoyed our stay here while traveling through the French West Indies.
