10 Top-Rated Bed and Breakfast Inns in Kaikoura, Canterbury Region, South Island

May 1, 2023 Major Galusha

In the Maori language, Kaikoura means "meal of crayfish," a nod to the New Zealand township's seafood-rich origins. Remnants of those early days can be found at Fyffe House, the oldest surviving building, and Kaikoura Museum. Today, the South Island settlement provides an ideal base camp for observing the abundant offshore wildlife (sperm whales, dusky dolphins, orcas and fur seals) and dining on fresh local catch. Numerous galleries showcase the knitting, pottery and jewelry of area artisans.

This is such a nice place to stay; so much space and everything is clean, comfortable and beautifully done. The host was friendly and very accomodating. The location is perfect; a nice stroll along the esplanade takes you to either Kaikoura town center or the pier. The beach is just across the road. Lovely breakfast on top of all that.

We took my elderly parents to stay overnight in Kaikoura from Christchurch. Everything was perfect. Julie is a fabulous host & fussed over my parents making sure they were comfortable. Breakfast was lovely & again Julie spoilt us. I would recommend Bendamere B&B to anyone wanting to stay in Kaikoura. Make sure you do the 1/2 hour drive North to see the seals

Relaxed, well appointed lodge for a fabulous family holiday

We stayed at Manakau Lodge for 4 nights in mid March. Two families with young children. The lodge was perfect for us. We had plenty of space with the 4 spacious bedrooms each with their own ensuite. The kitchen had everything we needed just like home away from home. We had the coffee machine going every morning. The kids loved playing on the deck and excitedly toddling over to see if the sheep were there by the fence. Kim and Janice were generous and kind hosts and were always available if we needed them for anything. With its slightly elevated position we enjoyed both mountain and sea views, and loved the rural setting with no neighbours! And only 10 min drive to Kaikōura. We can't wait to go back. Thank you Janice and Kim. You're doing a great job.

Amazing place to stay

My partner and I stayed here for one night during queens birthday weekend. We had an amazing time. From the moment we arrived we received a wonderful welcome from Kevin and his dogs Big bob and Boston. We loved talking to Kevin and listening to his experiences as a police officer, traveling over seas and living in Kaikoura . Made us a lovely breakfast and made sure we were well taken care of. It’s a beautiful place and is only 5mins out of town. This is now our favourite place to stay and we will be back again. Thank you for all your hard work!

Simply Outstanding!

Reviewed By Nakitravellers

We stayed two nights and couldn’t have wished for better accomodation - it was simply outstanding in every way. The views were amazing - mountains one side & sea the other. The house was very spacious, very clean and well equipped ( the espresso coffee machine was much appreciated!), there was even a Webber BBQ on the deck! The little touches left for us on our arrival was a lovely surprise - home made biscuits on the kitchen bench and chocolates on our pillow! We would certainly recommend staying here to our family and friends - it was so peaceful & relaxing.

We booked just one night to try sleeping in a YURT. Wished we had stayed longer and done more of the activities around Kaikoura (10mins away). Next time we'll book the Railway Wagon, or the Teepee, or the Wild West Wagon. So many choices and all carefully presented by Kevin the host. Great for families with a cute range of farm animals around the site. Great for couples looking for something wackyily different.

High quality B&B. Well furnished, very comfortable bed, hot shower. Built 2013 so very modern. Nicely separate, so have complete privacy, joining Patrick and Mary-Claire for tasty breakfast upstairs in their kitchen. Breakfast toast, cereal, juice, yoghurt, fresh fruit salad, and boiled egg if you want one. Room has fridge in cupboard so can't hear it. Great wifi, great view of ocean, and if you get up early enough the sunrise. Location is short walk from Dophin Encounter. Thoroughly enjoyed our two nights and recommended.
