A Highlight of Our Trip to Ireland

Reviewed By Aslanschild2

Our overnight stay in this castle/country house was one of the very best experiences of our two-week trip to Ireland. Paul and Patrycja Mernagh are gracious and elegant, as is their newly refurbished castle/country house B&B. Both have worked previously in the hotel industry for many years, and it shows. They know how to do hospitality and fine dining. They are not hovering or chatty, but are friendly and make themselves available when needed. The breakfast was gourmet (baked eggs!) and sumptuous, served meticulously. Fit for the king and queen of the Castle, which is exactly how we felt. Our room was spacious and gorgeous, among the loveliest we had on our trip. One of the most unusual experiences we had during our entire stay in Ireland was the permission Paul gave us to enter the 15th-Century castle ruin attached to the 17th-Century country house, and fully explore it on our own. It is well-lit and partially restored (very early but evident efforts). With due caution, we felt perfectly safe climbing the railed stairs all the way to the turrets and gazing out across the idyllic farmlands, something that would never be allowed in the U.S. thanks to lawyers and a highly litigious citizenry. We could hardly believe our good fortune to be able to do this, and we thanked Paul afterward for his—what, courage? Good will towards his guests? Desire to share such a precious heritage? All of the above, I believe. He sadly observed that he may not be able to offer this privilege much longer, even in Ireland. So, come while you can. This place is a rare find; for us it was the treat of a lifetime.

Centrally located at a stones throw from the Castle which can be reached just walking out of the back garden. Has its own car park from the rear of the hotel. Breakfast was fresh and served to order. Definitely would stay again if am in Kilkenny.

We stayed two nights in this lovely hotel. The staff were really friendly and helpful. The room was clean, comfortable and quiet. The hotel has a great colourful inner courtyard to sit in on warm days and nights. The bar area is comfortable and where breakfast is served. The restaurant is very good, food good quality and fairly priced. We were lucky that a band was playing in the Bakers Loft, a big room with lots of seating. Car parking is just over the road at €2.00 for a 24 hour stay. If you are thinking of staying in Trim we would recommend Brogans.

Excellent Spot!!

Great location, beautiful room, and the staff were so quick and helpful. Breakfast each morning was good and extremely helpful. This is a wonderful location with very few drawbacks. The only issue we had was that the AC was difficult to navigate in the room, and the AC unit was outside of the room with the bed, which made it hard to balance during the night. But the window opened, which helped a lot. We would absolutely visit this hotel again!

Very comfortable

Reviewed By Jody W

The B&B is just outside the city centre, so be prepared for a 30 minute walk or pay for a taxi. We had our own bikes, so this made the process of getting to and from the city much easier. There are plenty of bike racks in the city centre, so you're able to lock them up while shopping or sightseeing. The room was well equipped, spacious and comfortable but at €150 per night, this is no more than I'd expect. Our room had access to a lovely garden and as we had great weather, it was perfect to sit in the evening with a glass of wine. The breakfast was very tasty and perfectly cooked and the staff were very attentive and pleasant.
