Hotel Taselotzin

A friendly, unique place to stay.

Reviewed By LondonRioTraveller

We spent 2 nights at the Hotel Taselotzin, one of our best experiences in Mexico. The hotel is located a 15-minute walk from the centre of Cuetzalan along very steep roads. Our rooms were simple but attractively decorated. The restaurant serves excellent and very reasonably-priced breakfasts and authentic local dinners. There's a shop selling hand-embroidered items, soaps and other products made by members of the cooperative that runs the hotel – almost a better choice that's available at the Sunday market, plus you can be secure in the knowledge that the items that you're buying really are locally produced and that the profits really go to the producers. Almost all the staff were extremely friendly and helpful.

Third summer at Posada El Volador

Reviewed By martin k

After a 2 year absence from Mexico we stayed at the hotel for 3 months (with the exception of a 10 day mini-vacation in Oaxaca). Same room and the same experience...Great! Got to travel with David and Rosy who own the place, go shopping with them and be a part of the life in this town up in the mountains. I suggest if you have the time to visit some of the villages surrounding this area. There are numerous fiestas during the year and each village has one. David and Rosy can help and I have a list made by my friend Jaime who lives there. We went to about 10 in the 3 months we were there. Also there are lots of hikes to waterfalls, pristine mountains, and canyons in the area. There are lots of guides but most of them are going to take you to the same rather touristy places. Jaime is a great guide and his English is excellent as he lived in the USA for more than 20 years. Drop me a line and I can give you his contact info. In the city there are 4 market days: Thursday to Sunday. Sunday is the largest and worth going to. An hour away is Zacapoxtla with a HUGE Wednesday market. Easily reached by local buses that leave every hour. A much larger city than Cuetzalan with a massive market that sprawls all over the city including vendors selling live turkeys, lots of locally harvested wild mushrooms, handmade ice cream at the zocalo, and a street lined with nothing but huge piles of corn. Make sure you go into the panaderia (bakery) along the zocalo on the left side as you are facing the municipal building. The place is gigantic and dates from 1968 I believe. The cinnamon rolls are amazing!!! Enjoy your stay and make sure you try all the street and market food!! Especially tlacoyos and make sure you get the ones made from the leaves of an avocado tree, cooked over a coma and not fried!!.

Charming and convenient

Reviewed By Heather Y

I spent a weekend in Cuetzalan with Mexican friends, and it truly was a magical experience. (Cuetzalan is one of Mexico's "pueblos magicos.") El Encuentro was a big part of the charm. We arrived quite late in the evening in the pouring rain, and were directed to a room at the back of the hotel, which proved to look out over the tile rooves of the town to ranges of hills in the distance. Having looked around the inn, and having read other comments, it's clear that not all rooms at El Encuentro enjoy such a marvellous view. However, we were thrilled, and it was beautiful to watch the fog lifting in the early morning. Our room was comfortable, with two double beds, and a good-sized bathroom with plenty of towels. The bed was comfortable, and extra blankets were available. Everything was clean and well-appointed, and I was charmed by the stencilled decoration and the wall niche featuring a lovely oversized set of rosary beads. The central courtyard features a lovely ceramic angel and numerous plants. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful, and the inn is located a few steps from the centre of town. The parking lot is a short walk away; not so nice in the rain, but as close as it could be in this densely built-up community. I would definitely stay there again.

Clean rooms, fresh air and excellent walking tours with the hotel´s guide, Raúl.

Reviewed By Sian Rosa H

Modest, comfortable hotel which is 5 mins walk to the city centre. We had an unforgettable 6 hour hike with Raul who is the hotel´s official guide. He took up to the waterfall ´Corazón del Bosque´ and the very impressive cave network just outside of Cuetzalan which are deep in the jungle and sacred to the local people. We learnt all sorts of Nahua words for plants and animals and were regaled with wonderful traditional stories about the ancient landscape. You will need a Spanish speaker in your group to get the full experience. Very reasonably priced. Highly recommended!

No WiFi in room, but Room 9 was great otherwise

Reviewed By mizshan

My family of three stayed in room #9 for three nights - it’s a family room with beds for 6 (although there isn’t much space for luggage so we use one bed as a luggage rack). This room overlooks the charming plazuela and has two balconies where we spent a lot of time reading, taking photos, or just watching life go by. We absolutely adored the view. The room wasn’t perfect since there was typically no WiFi there (the hotel really needs to install a WiFi extender to serve this room!), the lighting was harsh (just one switch for three harsh ceiling lights - no beside lamps at all), and the bathroom was a bit odd. However, the location and view made up for these issues, and we really enjoyed our stay there. We also found all of the staff to be extremely nice, helpful, and responsive. Finally, the top floor breakfast room has an even better view, and is a lovely place to hang out at any time of day or evening.

Cabanas Los Cedros

Living amidst the nature!!! Incredible people!!!

Reviewed By mail2addy

The cabins are rustic and you feel in the middle of nature, with a beautiful view of the sunset from the cabin in which I stayed. As I said, you are surrounded by nature and therefore expect some insects / spiders, which can not be avoided. We were traveling with a 3 year old boy and we were worried when we encountered a large spider at 10 p.m. at night. When we reported this, the owners immediately responded to the situation. They cleaned all the rooms again, fumigated the rooms (non toxic for humans), changed the bedding, etc., I was impressed with their response! The owners are very warm and pleasant, and the service is excellent. The owner, Mr. Alejandro, took us to the pyramids of Yohualichan, at no cost, when we were wondering how to drive there. We did not include breakfast in our reservation, however, the owners delighted us with a wonderful Mexican breakfast during our stay (Chilaquiles, which I like), with hot coffee brewed in their own coffee plantations with tasty PAN dulce (sweet breads, as it is called in Spanish). When it was time for our departure, the owners have taken hospitality to a different level, when the owner (Mr. Alejandro) gave us 3 dozen raw bananas that he picked up from his friend's farm. We are very fond of raw bananas, but it is very rare to find them in Mexico City, since people ripe them and do not sell raw bananas. The Cabañas are still being developed, but their hospitality is INCREDIBLE! I fully recommend one to stay at Los Cedros Cabañas!

Hotel Corazon De Niebla

Excelente experiencia (para regresar sin dudarlo).

Reviewed By MarioAJ
