There where no birds at all. We saw just a couple of Herons and when we told the skipper to stop for photographs he just ignored us. He knew nothing. he just wanted to take us to this other island where there are restaurants and was full of people. He probably knew somebody over there so he can get a fee.
Maybe it was a bad season for bird watching, the most interesting experience were the crocodiles.
Make sure to get an experienced guide with you.

Many people stop in Tumbes soon after crossing the border into Peru, for the sole reason to change money. While you are here drop into the Cathedral on the central Plaza de Armas. Otherwise known as the Church of Nicholas de Tolentino. It was built in the 17th Century in baroque style. It is usual that it is topped by two blue mosaic cupolas. Mosaics continue inside around the main altar. It is white washed inside with stained glass showing scenes from Jesus's life.

We visited this sanctuary in late October. We went on an organised tour with an agency from Tumbes, as we felt the logistic would be easier this way and we are glad we did. We saw a great variety of birds including magnificent frigate birds, Peruvian pelicans, little blue herons, cocoi herons, yellow-crowned night-herons, white ibises, ringed and green kingfishers, whimbrels and snowy egrets. We also saw various species of crabs, fish, shrimps and black shell clams. The visit was by motorless boat, which being silent allowed to see the birds up close.
This sanctuary is much less visited than nearby Puerto Pizarro and as such is much more interesting for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

Just a mile outside Tumbes is this wonderful preserve - Pacific Dry Forest (Bosque Seco) - with only native species present. There is a short pathway through the forest and many birds abound. There is a 4 storey mirador, or lookout, giving a 360 degree Panorama of the Tumbes area, and a very good restaurant serving local dishes.
Unfortunately it is very under-used, but well worth the visit - only a short moto-taxi ride from Tumbes.

Las facilidades que ofrece esta isla están de mal en peor, el transporte en bote desde el puerto es ofrecido en condiciones mínimas de seguridad, en la lista se encuentran restaurantes que ofrecen alimentos en condiciones muy precarias, hay que tener cuidado con la marea pues podría darnos sorpresas. Al zarpar del muelle hay que hacer unos pagos mínimos por el uso del mismo, regatear por el servicio de los botes pues la oferta es muy variada. No dejarse sorprender por los comisionistas, hay que buscar a los dueños de los botes directamente

We visited this seldom visited national park in late October. We went on an organised tour with an agency from Tumbes, as we felt the logistic would be easier this way and we are glad we did as it would be very difficult to visit the place without a guide. The ecosystem of the dry Forests of the Amotape Hills is unique and really interesting and beautiful. We visited the section of the national park at Rica Playa. We first hiked along banana plantations, just outside the national park, then along the Tumbes River, then through the dry forest and up a viewpoint that offered fantastic views of the surroundings. We saw really interesting plants and trees, such as the kapok or ceibo tree (Ceiba trichistandra) and the magnificent araguaney or guayacan tree (Tabebuia chrisanta) in full bloom, as it has rained a little the previous days. It must be really amazing to come here during the rainy season (from December to March) when all the guayacan trees are blooming. We also saw some Guayaquil squirrels and some iguanas and lizards.
We really enjoyed our visit to this national park and would love to visit other sections of the park in the future.

Conjunto arqueológico de adobe y piedra que fue ocupado aparentemente, desde épocas preincas, durante el predominio Chimú e incluso durante el dominio Inca. Existen restos de piezas de cerámica, osamentas e instrumentos de piedra y un taller en el que se trabajaban conchas como el spondylus y otros moluscos.
Se ha descubierto un camino de 8 km construido con canto rodado, que conectaba el sitio arqueológico con el litoral, un canal de irrigación y una pirámide trunca o huaca de adobe denominada "Cabeza de Vaca".
