Raise your hand if you think museum visit is destined for rainy day activity?
Yeah, I didn't think so. Open-Air Museum of Old Japanese Farm Houses is one prime example. The Schwarzwaldmuseum, or Black Forest Open-Air Museum, is even better. We visited on a sunny morning. That's the best day for learning the yesteryear of people in the Black Forest.
Learn more from this open classroom. You won't pick a rainy day to go there, trust me.

There are some lovely walks throughout the park area, with plenty of wildlife to be seen along the route, such as squirrels, finches, jays and nutcrackers. We were lucky enough to see the waterfall in two different guises. The first visit was when the falls were flowing fairly normally, but a few hours later there was a torrential downpour so we went bak to visit again to see the vast difference in the amount of water coming over the falls. They were quite spectacular at that time.
There are lovely views of the town along the way as you meander up the walkways too.

Visit to House of Thousand Clocks was a great experience. A unique one. As such cuckoo clocks are so fascinating and seeing sooo——many in one store was just......Cuckoo clocks - small and large(in fact giant size), mechanical and quartz movement, fancy and simple and prices to suit each Customer’s pocket. Over and above all this the staff was extremely pleasant and keen to show you around and explain every minute detail regarding every piece. They also had a good collection of antique pieces too.
I would strongly recommend a visit to all who travel to that region.

If you're looking for a real, hand carved, hand made German cuckoo clock you should go to Olli's. The woman at the front will answer your questions and give you time to shop, you can customize your clock and they have different shopping options. No nonsense, no following you around, just honest people making a really nice product. We love our clock!

I bought my first Cuckoo Clock from Eble Uhr in 1984 and subsequently purchased one of ray daughter in 1998. My son and I returned in 2000 and had two custom made grandfather clocks made and shipped to our homes in Texas. Eble Uhr is a must stop for me when i visit Hornberg to see our friends. This time was no exception. Our friends wanted to purchase a Black Forest clock.
Able still makes a range of cuckoo clocks but the showroom of grandfather clocks has dwindled in size. I found it disappointing to see that they have turned the building into a souvenir shop displaying several inferior clocks that have no connection to the Black Forest. I do nothtink that I need to stop here anymore. If you are looking for a grandfather clock, you will still find good craftsmanship along with some of the cuckoo clocks that they still make. Ignore the rest because they are not a reflection of the history of the workshop.

This is a must-see for all visitors to Triberg. The wood-carved conference room in the Town Hall (Holzgeschnitzter Rathaussaal) is not only beautiful, but portrays the spirit and life of the Black Forest, the natural environment, animals, the life of the people and their culture. It was carved from spruce wood in 1926 by Karl Josef Furtwaengler, known as "Scnitzersepp", a native Triberg artist.
You could walk in, look round for five minutes and walk out again (entry is free), but take the time to read the small pamphlet on offer and find the features it describes: the animal frieze, the tradesmen of the town, the clock industry, the Waterfalls, Adam and Eve in the wedding section (this room is used for weddings), the Mayor and town councillors... This is a work of art which rewards close study with delightful details.
The conference room is normally open Monday to Friday 9 - 12, and Monday to Thursday 2 - 4, but may be closed for weddings, conferences and receptions.

I had read the publicity that the part of this railway line from Hornberg, through Triberg and on to St Georgen was a most spectacular rail journey and worth taking, even if there is no "special" train and you must ride on the normal inter-city train. Undoubtedly one must admire the skill of the engineers who built the line and the tunnels but, really, there are few "spectacular" parts and there are a lot of tunnels! The views are trees, Valleys and more trees - pleasant enough but it does not warrant the publicity description - I have been on better! The return fare cost was 9€ per person.
One tip - don't bother with a look around St Georgen as there is nothing there of note on an autumnal day in October. We were hard pushed to occupy one hour, climbing up to the town and then strolling around a non-descript town. Save yourself this disappointment and get off the train, walk quickly to the next platform and immediately take the return train back - the return train leaves just 2 mins after the arrival of the train from Hornberg/Triberg.
We were not alone is this assessment - other tourists from our outbound train did the same as us and wished they had jumped on the return train immediately, too!!

This climbing park is great for all ages.
My 3.5 year old had fun hanging in mid air with her small helmet and harness.
My teenagers were thrilled, and my wife and I participated too.
There are 6 different routes - difficulty levels, so anyone can find their place.
We spent a great 3 hours there and walked on to the coffee shop by the lake down the trail. great cakes and ice cream. We didn't taste the food.

If the face plate says "Made in Gemany" it's not hand gemacht (hand made). I would recommend that you stop in the shop of G. Burger and see his beautiful clocks. I would also urge you to NOT buy an one day movement. This is my second trip to Triberg (34 years apart) and this time I pulled out all the stops. spent over $1,000 Euro and bought the 8 day movement.

We happened to walk into this store after looking at some of the items on display outside. The store has beautiful, traditional clothes. My husband instantly fell in love with a traditional German wool jacket. He tried the jacket on and it fit like a glove. The best part was it was on sale! Once he decided to buy the jacket, he looked at the traditional shirts. He found a lovely blue and white check shirt with hand embroidery and writing on the inside of the cuffs. Once again, the item was on sale. The person who helped us was really nice and low key. There was no pressure to buy. The prices were good. We have priced traditional jackets for several years in Germany. The prices here were reasonable. Now, my husband can celebrate Octoberfest in his lederhosen, shirt, and wool jacket. The helpful person also gave us directions to maintain the jacket. DO NOT WASH! One airs the jacket after use. We would recommend this store to others. It is conveniently located at the top of the Hauptstrasse near the entrance to the Waterfalls.
