10 Things to Do in Santos That You Shouldn't Miss

December 22, 2017 Marissa Gamble

Although it's also the location of the Latin America's largest seaport, Santos isn't just a boring port town. The city of 420,000, just 75 kilometers from São Paulo, features a seven-kilometer stretch of beach divided into just as many social cliques as you'd find on Ipanema. A verdant promenade separates the beach from the seafront condos and hotels, along which families and friends walk, amble, bike, skate, rollerblade, throw frisbees, you name it. Less sandy points of interest include the Museu do Café Brasileiro (Brazilian Coffee Museum), the Aquário Municipal (City Aquarium), the Orquidário Municipal (City Orchid Garden) and the Neo-Gothic Santos Cathedral.

This is the only really mandatory turistic place in santos city.
To go to a beach city and don't go to the beach is just insane, it's not the best beach in the region but for sure the best beach walk you can have around, a must see if you are around

St. Anthony Embare Basilica

While not unexpected in a country with many Catholics, this beachfront basilica is indeed worth a stop. The outside is a bit dark, with moss and humid weather conditioning, but the inside is somewhat impressive (not on an Italian scale though). There are six murals painted on the sides of the base of the arched ceiling (12 in total). Each has a beautiful Christian depiction (don't ask me what). The length of the chapel is impressive as well, at least half a block. When I visited (on a Friday) it appeared preparations were being made for a wedding (not many seemingly going to mass on a Friday or Saturday). Nonetheless a few (3) were praying in the front pews. I spent only 15-20 minutes, but it might be worth a few more. Enjoy if in Santos on the beach.

I've traveled many countries and Santos has the "Most Beautiful Beach Avenue" in the World.
5 Miles of Gardens along the avenue is something unforgetable, Ideal for a walk in the aftenoon apreciating the amazing Sunset.
Also it is a nice place to walk your pet (remeber to bring a plastic bag). Also you can bring your chair and seat under one of the trees and apreciate the view.

Coffee Museum

Inaugurated in 1998, the Coffee Museum is one of the main touristic attractions of the City of Santos and has as main purpose to preserve and make known the history of coffee in Brazil and in the world. By means of objects, documents and audiovisual media, the Institution shows the public how the evolution of coffee culture and the political, economic and cultural development of the country are closely connected since the second half of the XVIII century and up to our days.

This is the first coffee museum I visited. It is comparable to the chocolate museums I saw in Europe (York, Cologne, Brussels, Bruges). Compared to those places, the museum is better located, because it is in the old coffee exchange, and of course it is in Brazil. It shows the production stages, a timeline of coffee production, coffee machines, etc. But the building itself is the highlight. Entry was free when I visited. So I could not ask for a coffee to be included. The museum ice coffee is very good. Explanations are in Portuguese, but there are cards with english and spanish information in the rooms.

I found this historic streetcar experience excellent. Very "real". I find it interesting the "complaints" and lower ratings because of noise, and English. This mode of transportation WAS noisy, and it's kept original, and you aren't in the US. How much Portuguese is offered at US attractions?
Simple to go on your own, and I'd suggest heading there first. Pele Museum is across the street. This gives a wonderful view of the downtown area allowing you an orientation for later walking. There are guide sheets in English with descriptions. I'd suggest Reading through this before the street car leaves. the guide will yell out the numbers.
I think this is a real treasure this city has to be proud of. A great value at around $2.

If you are on Brazil for any reason and you are a scuba diver, shame on you if you don't do a trip to there

There was a section for the FIFA World cup, each level depicting the different years. The Museum showcase a huge collection of Brazilian football memorabilia. There was also an additional section to the museum where there were interactive games and fun activities in relation to the football world, like quiz's and trivias etc. A must visit museum!
