Hauptmarkt

This public square has served as Trier's main marketplace since medieval times.

Reviewed By KeithAfrica - Bonn, Germany

The Main Market center of Trier is a busy and comfortable centre. It is the access to the • the Steipe, the city council's banqueting house, • the city church St. Gangolf (through the little baroque gate on the south side) • access to the Trier Dom, • access to the Jewish Quarter After the Viking destruction of 882, the archbishop moved the market from the river to the present site, the Market Cross still commemorates this event from 958. The Market Fountain from 1595 shows St. Peter, the patron saint of the Cathedral as well as the city, standing on top, surrounded by the four cardinal virtues of good city government, Justice, Strength, Temperance, and Wisdom (originals in the Municipal Museum), but also by monsters and frolicking monkeys. The fountain, just like the Cathedral and the parish and guild church St. Gangolf as well the Steipe, are all rooted in the 300-year struggle for supremacy in the city.

Liebfrauenkirche, Trier

Reviewed By Steveage - Rexburg, United States

This church feels like 'the little sister' next to St. Peter's Dom Trier. Built in early 13th century, it’s one of the earliest Gothic churches in the world. Built entirely on Roman foundation. It has some 15th century wall paintings. Stained glass is a recent add. Church layout is Greek Cross. Burial place of archbishops as far back as 1581. Under this church are numerous excavations not open to the public, however, one area has glass with a railing around it so you can look down in the dig area.

Highly recommended! You can take the train to Cochem. The station is about ten minutes from the town centre. There is a tourist information and the shuttle bus leaves from one of the bus stands outside (just ask at the tourist information if you need help - they were really friendly). The bunker itself is a five minute drive away. The tour lasted about an hour. I did the German-language tour (and German is not my first language). Your German will need to be good if you do the German language tour as an explanation is needed. I believe there are also English-language tours as well. The only slight criticism is the group size. There were about 28 in my group and we didn't always fit in the same room as the guide which also made it a little difficult to catch everything that was being said. However, this was all in all a minor point and the passion and enthusiasm of the guide was clear and made this a really interesting tour. Cochem is a beautiful town and you could easily make a full-day trip here.

Historische Senfmuehle

Reviewed By DrPiggy - Davenport, United States

My husband and I recently visited this mustard mill. There are numerous mustards available for tasting. It was fairly crowded when we went and we didn't get a chance to try some of the other food items. Nor did we take the tour of the mustard factory (not in English but I bet it would be interesting). Also note that they only accept cash. But we got some wonderful and unique mustards. Germany has the best mustard!
