Sognefjellvegen

Activities Worth seeing Events Accomondation Transport Eat and drink Useful information Jotunheimen> National tourist routes> Sognefjell Explore the region Click the map to visit the regions Select region Sognefjell - Across the roof of Norway In majestic surroundings, high in the Mountains past blue ice, jagged peaks and Emerald lakes, the Sognefjell Road runs between Sognefjord, the world’s longest fjord, and the Gudbrandsdal valley. The Sognefjell Road was designated Norway’s first tourist route in 1997 and has just been upgraded to a National tourist route in 2003. The Sognefjell Road has carried traffic since time immemorial. Fish and salt from the west and butter, hides, iron and tar from the east were carried by people on their shoulders or on horseback. The cairns helped travellers find the way in all kinds of weather. The Sognefjell Road gives you access to Jotunheimen National Park, with Galdhopiggen, Norway’s highest mountain, and several of the other of the highest peaks in Norway, and to Jostedalsbreen, Norway’s largest glacier. Here your can poke about on your own among soaring peaks, take a tour over glaciers and mountain tops with experienced guides, and go skiing all year round. The route between the inland valley, high Mountains and fjord offers breathtaking contrasts in climate and topography and a variety of plant and animal life, from lower elevations with farms, pine Forests and the conditions for human settlement to the alpine terrain approx. 1,000 metres above sea level. Up here you’ll find bare rock with clear traces of the last Ice Age, with grass, moss, lichen interspersed with juniper and willow. Here you’ll also find hardy polar plants such as arctic buttercup, with mountain birch here and there. Wild as well as tame reindeer live on Sognefjell, and down towards the Valleys there are moose and deer. In the high Mountains, eagles and rough-legged buzzards thrive. In eastern regions there may be bears, lynx and wolverines, though they are few and very shy. For more informaton on the touristroutes www.turistveg.no

driving this route was one of the highlights of our trip. best to do it with no rush. you can stop as many times as you want to enjoy the views, go for short walk, or even find a route for a day if you really are into hiking.
we were driving a small caravan, and no problem if you don't mind to give way from time to time to other vehicles and do not pretend to drive like fitipaldi.
excellent break between tourist traps, you really get the feeling you are visiting now the real Norway.

Galdhopiggen

Galdhopiggen is the highest mountain in Norway, 2.469 m.a.s.l. It is also one of the most visited peaks in the country, apart from some hills in more densely populated areas. The hight is fascinating, and Galdhopiggen is also relatively easy to reach. You can follow the normal t-marked route from Spiterstulen 1.103 m.a.s.l., four hours to the top, two and a half- three hours back down.

Go early because this is a popular destination with both tourists and locals. It is quite a hike and you'll need to 'rope-up' for safety to cross the glacier. There is now a hut at the top for food/drink which is quite welcome.

Lom Stave church

The Lom stave church was timber dated to 1158. The church is still in use as the main church in Lom. Inside the church you will find a large collection of paintings from the 1700s and a lot of beautiful acanthus carvings. Over time the church has been rebuilt and enlarged several times, something one can see clear traces of. When the church was restored first in the 70'ies, there was an opportunity for extensive excavations. It was made several interesting findings of pilgrimage brand, rune staves, parchment documents and the largest total of coins found in Norway of 2,245 coins.

As our tour group made a 1-hour stopover here, we came by this lovely wooden church for a visit built around the 12th century. The Stave Church is one of the few stave churches around the area. What made this church unique and special was that it was a triple-nave stave church that uses free standing inner columns to support a raised section in the ceiling of the main nave and also the carved dragon heads on the roof!
We walked around the sanctuary and the place was nice and lots flowers around and of course a cemetery site. It was drizzling then and very cold but we still decided to spend some time walking around and saw groups of little children here, possibly on excursion or outing here!
One will need to pay to enter inside the church for a visit which we didn’t as we only had an hour stopover as we decided to visit the mini museum (unfortunately no photography was allowed inside) to learn more about the church and also to grab something from the souvenir shop, which we were running short of time.
Generally, it’s a nice church and few of the remaining stave churches and we did enjoy our walk and visit here!

We were originally planning to do a more touristy Jostedal glacier tour. However, we knew from past glacier hiking experiences that hiking on a private tour versus a larger group tour is a very different experience. Private tours give you a lot more flexibility to do the tour that best fits your desires. Also, this glacier that leaves from Krossbu was right on our route. Iver was the perfect tour guide. He grew up exploring these Mountains and is very skilled at guiding glacier hikes, mountain hikes, mountain biking, and more in this area. He was safety conscious but also willing to challenge the group if so desired. He adjusts the trip to your comfort level. He is also very friendly and knowledgeable of the geography and the terrain explaining different features along the way when pausing for breaks.
The glacier hike from Krossbu starts with about an hour uphill hike to the base of the glacier. From there we hiked about 30-45 min to the first ice falls where we had an opportunity to use our ice axes and be as challenged as we desired. It was another 30 minutes or so to the second ice falls where once again we got to climb around a bit. The walk back is much easier than the walk up. We had nice weather and it was really beautiful to see the ice peaks and crevices. It was a lot of fun and we felt more challenged than the normal glacier hikes we have done.
You can't go wrong with Iver! We have done a good amount of private guides all over the world and he is one of the best.

Spiterstulen Bre- og Fjellforing

Spiterstulen Glacier- and Mountainguiding consist of 15 hand-picked guides, ranging from 18 to 65 years. Most of us educated and formed through the highly traditional and experienced Spiterstulen Guiding community. Alltogheter, we have gained more than hundred years of experience of guiding in the area, and tousands trips to glacier and peaks in the area around Galdhøpiggen. The local attatchment, love for the Mountains and detailed knowledge of the different routes around in the area are some of our values when guiding. Our philosophy is that the young, recently educated guides should be taken under the wings of the older, experienced guides. This ensuring that we pass on the knowledge and the experience that we have gained through genrations of mountainguiding at Spiterstulen. We enjoy beeing out, either ascending the peaks, historic walks along the valley, taking children exploring or playing. Our experience is that rain and wind can give just as great adventure as sun and blue skies! Join us on one our trips, and we will give you an adventure!

We booked the glacier tour "Blue Ice" and are more than happy with our experience. Our guide Steinar was very experienced, not only did we feel safe all the time during the walk in this extraordinary beautiful landscape but Steinar also provided interesting background information about the development of glaciers. We can only highly recommend the tour. There ist a meeting with the guides in Spitterstulen mountain hut on the evening before the tour. We recommend to take part to be best prepared for the tour as you will need some equipment (mountian boots, gloves, sunglasses). Some other equipment is provided (such as grampons, harness, ropes).

Norwegian Mountain Museum

The Norwegian Mountain Museum is a natural stop for anyone with an interest in or feeling for the Norwegian Mountains. The museum displays the interaction between people and the mountain landscape from the retreat of the ice age until the present day. Exciting Exhibitions deal with different aspects of mountain landscape and culture. Amongst other things you can see Norway's only full-scale model of a mammoth - an impressive sight! The Norwegian Mountain Museum serves also as the information centre for the Jotunheimen and Reinheimen National Park and contains both a museum shop and tourist information centre.
