Libya (/ˈlɪbiə/ ( listen); Arabic: ليبيا), officially the State of Libya (Arabic: دولة ليبيا Dawlat Lībyā), is a sovereign state in the Maghreb region of North Africa, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast, Chad and Niger to the south, and Algeria and Tunisia to the west. The country is made of three historical regions, Tripolitania, Fezzan, and Cyrenaica. With an area of almost 1.8 million square kilometres (700,000 sq mi), Libya is the fourth largest country in Africa, and is the 16th largest country in the world. Libya has the 10th-largest proven oil reserves of any country in the world.

Visited May 2017. Easy day trip from Tripoli. 125km east. Biggest danger right now would seem to be the traffic. Dual lane all the way but crazy speeds. Very impressive ruins right on the Mediterranean Sea. Also make sure you visit the Colosseum a little further east. Don't miss it if you are in Tripoli.

Libya has much to offer in the way of Roman/Greek Ruins, and Cyrene (or Cyrenica) is one of those sites to behold! It was a large city, and it was neat to walk the old streets and see the former buildings. Much church history is there as well. A large portion of the ancient city of Cyrene is still yet to be uncovered. The Temple of Zeus is a massive structure around the corner from the main site, but it is a must see! Since the revolution in Libya, the grounds could use a little cleaning up and the thistles cleared, but the ruins themselves are fantastic!

We visited Ghadames with Arkno Tours a Libyan Travel Company in January 2007. After a two week tour of Libya we have come back to Libya to live and work. Ghadames is only one of many highlights in Libya. The day we visited the old city with our guide Abdalla Almofeq was a warm winters day with a delightful blue sky.
The photos I have submitted show the town painted white to reflect heat but to remain cool a significant number of homes and alleyways are below ground level.
The beauty of this town makes it truely one of the jewels of the Sahara.

An incredible site - walking along the great silent expanses was magical and will always remain as a unique memory. A place which must be experienced to be believed.
Timshghal Tours in Libya made this trip a wonderful and easygoing experience with a great team who felt like being our best friends. We were lucky to have the most inspiring guide with us - Alassane Amikoussou who was knowledgeable in everything around us and replied tirelessly to our endless questions. I defintely recommend this tour company as they were extremely friendly and helpful before, during and after the trip.

Murzuq caslte is one of the niciest touristic place in the middle way from Sabha (Sebha) to Ghat. The city looks calm and arabic/touareg style. There is nice, croudy and loud market about 200 meters from the castle. Castle itself is a Turkish defensive construction from which sultans of Fezzan once ruled. To get in we paid 3,5 dinars per head (2 Euro). Castle is situated on a hill so there is beautiful Panorama from the walls.
There is also an old and impressive mosque stending just next to the fortifications. Made from clay, exactly the same as the castle. Behind the wall there are also muslim graves.
As soon as you get out of the Walls which surrounds castle you will find palm trees forest.
City is calm and pleasant. It is nice to take a walk or drive arround.

I visited several different war Cemeteries in Tobruk, and it was amazing to see how well kept up they are...clean, swept, and cared for! So much history! Artistically speaking, seeing each individual name written in mosaic tile-work in the German War Cemetery was pretty impressive!...I think there were around 6,000 names. If you're in the area, the various war Cemeteries are definitely worth a visit!
