10 Things to Do in Katerini That You Shouldn't Miss

March 3, 2018 Timmy Ribble

Katerini (Greek: Κατερίνη, Kateríni [kate'ɾini]) is a city in Central Macedonia, Greece, the capital of Pieria regional unit. It lies on the Pierian plain, between Mt. Olympus and the Thermaikos Gulf, at an altitude of 14 m. The city has a population of 85,851 (according to the 2014 census) and it is the second most populous urban area at the Region of Macedonia after Thessaloniki. The close distance between two cities (68km), has been beneficial for Katerini's development over recent years. Katerini is accessible from the main Thessaloniki–Athens highway GR-1/E75 (with the Katerini's South and North interchanges) and the Egnatia Odos to the north. It is served by Intercity, Proastiakos (Suburban Railway) and local trains on the main railway line from Athens to Thessaloniki and there is a comprehensive regional and national bus service with its hub in the city.

Nice little place. Long and wide sandy beach, warm sea (yet not always perfectly clean), enough restaurants, small grocery shops and souvenir shops. Budget prices, delicious food, nice Promenade to Paralia (round 2 km). Mount Olympus is near, so the weather is fine, there is always some breeze. Friendly people. Would come again.

Dion Archaeological Park

Reviewed By Andersen-71 - Copenhagen, Denmark

Stayed in nearby Litochoro and took the 20 minute drive by car to the archeological site at Dion.
The site itself is situated in a quiet residential area and when we visited there was only a dozen or so other visitors. Together with your tickets you get a map of the area and the entrance fee also covers the nearby museum (which we didn't go to).
The whole site is surprisingly large and you should allow for a couple of hours if you want to cover everything. For us the best thing was probably the main street and the public bathhouses with beautiful mosaics.
There are bilingual signs and posters at the points of interest in Greek and English. Some of the posters are faded and difficult to read.
Having seen Athens, Mycenae, Corinth and Delphi on the same vacation just before the visit to Dion was a little bit of a shame as Dion in our opinion probably doesn't quite match those other historic sights.
In its own rights, however, Dion is still worth a visit if you're in the area and you can't take away the history of the place that will always be a source of fascination and inspiration.

Nice place for fun with the children.Ticket price is very favorable. The professional staff that takes care of your safety. A great way to enter the little change at sea holiday.Following facilities are fine, but I believe that this new park will improve all of its contents in the coming years. The water in the pools for my taste a little bit colder ( colder than the sea water at June 29).In any case pretty fun for children and worth to take it.

Would recommend this excellent British-style pub near the main square, a good range of beers at a reasonable price. Very friendly staff, we were given a free shot of the local honey liqueur at the end of the evening. Plenty of snacks. Nice timber decor.
