10 Things to do in False Creek Flats That You Shouldn't Miss

November 10, 2021 Joeann Galban

Vancouver was founded as “Gastown” by an Englishman with a penchant for beer and storytelling. Today Gastown is a historic section of the Canadian metropolis, and the lively pubs still reflect the area’s former status as a sort of community drinking center. The city’s forests, grand parks, and impressive suspension bridge beckon travelers to explore them, as do the city’s shops and museums. Relive the glory of the 2010 Winter Games with visits to Olympic venues and the marvelous Olympic Cauldron.

New York has the the Staten Island Ferry, which, granted, has its own unique charm. But you need to “Go West” young man to British Columbia for the real deal. There are no roads through most of littoral BC so the way to get around is by ferry and these are top notch. Traveling from Victoria BC to Vancouver we took the 90 minute crossing from Swartz Bay (45 mins north of Victoria) to Tawassen just south of Vancouver. Big, bright, quiet and comfortable, the ship was a dream with unexpectedly good and reasonably priced restaurants, plenty of comfortable seating, and wide promenade decks to view the passing scenery (and oh what scenery!). Really a high light in just getting there. There’s something about ship travel that makes one slow down and smell the roses or, in this case, the salt air. BC Ferry Connector is superb and efficient comfortable bus - downtown Victoria to downtown Vancouver (drops you off at the Fairmont on W. Georgia St) - with driver who has great sense of humor. Just added to overall great trip.
