I lived across the bridge from this area when this area wasn't even developed. What a pleasant surprise to return years later and find a wonderful historical outdoor museum as well as indoor displays of life in the past centuries of Vastmanland. Well maintained buildings have been moved to the area and the interpreters in many of them are well versed in history of the era of iron ore mining. And just as you've tired of all of that information, a chance to "fika" or have a coffee and baked good await you in the lovely dining room.
This is definitely a place to see while in Fagersta.

We booked a trip with Wild Sweden for a moose safari. We appreciate so much that they allowed our son, age 5, to come and he loved it. Our primary motive for the trip was to have time in the Swedish Forests and to get to know what Sweden is like outside of Stockholm and Gothenberg. For us, the moose part was a bonus.
The safari begins with a walk in the forest, which was the highlight of the evening. It was so much fun to traipse through a beautiful Swedish moss-covered forest with an experienced guide who tells you about the different plants and animal tracks. We all wish that part had lasted longer, it ended way too soon. That felt like “real” Sweden to us!
Next is the campfire dinner and a talk from the guides about moose. The dinner was nice (lamb wraps, crackers with jam, cookies, coffee and beer – I’d brought a separate Sandwich for our son), and while most others took the opportunity to split off and talk amongst themselves, I’m glad we sat next to the guides and talked more with them about Sweden as that’s what we were there to learn about.
After that, we boarded vans and went in search of moose. We were asked to stay really quiet for the whole van ride so no time then to chat with the guide – get all that done before getting in the van. While we did see moose, they were from pretty far away, no way to get a photo. Our guide worked really hard to make sure we saw them, even shining a large spotlight into the forest at different times. We ended up seeing 4 or 5 of them plus a few hares and roe deer. Our safari was in September so it may be an issue with the time of year as the guides said in September they are moving around quite a lot.
The two guides were very nice and we loved talking with them. For us, while seeing the moose was fun, the highlight was the time in the forest. It was nice to be away from the big city and to appreciate the Swedish countryside for what it really is!
In terms of what to bring, for September, we were perfectly comfortable in hiking pants with long underwear underneath, hiking shoes, and fleeces. It wasn’t raining but we were glad our hiking shoes and pants are water repellant as the Forests are generally wet. We had heavier jackets, hats, and gloves with us but only needed them towards the end of the time at the campfire, and that’s when we were getting in the van anyway. Other than that, just have your camera, maybe a bottle of water, and a spirit of adventure! We’d packed binoculars and brought them but turns out that Wild Sweden supplies you with a professional pair to use while in the van, so it wasn’t necessary that we’d done that.
One note is that after you arrange the trip, be sure to get personal confirmation of where you will be meeting the guides. I had generic information from my automated receipt confirmation to meet at the Eco Lodge, so we’d dressed, packed, and drove off in enough time, only to pass the Wild Sweden van coming the other direction as we drove to meet them. I was stressed out as we tried to catch back up to them, only to realize that they’d thought they were picking us up at the B&B where we were staying. That was really nice that they did that, as I had no idea they were planning to pick us up, and I have scoured back through my email to see what instructions I missed, but haven’t found one. I don’t think it was anyone’s fault, just a cross communication error – and I should have been the one to email and confirm the plan rather than just assuming the generic info I had was accurate.
All in all, so glad we had this experience in the “wilds” of Sweden. Do yourself a favor and get out of the cities and experience the real Swedish countryside – you’ll be changed forever!

The oldest oil refinary in the world is located on Oil Island (Oljeon). The factory was built in 1875 on Barron in the lake Amanningen outside the small community of Angelsberg. The factory supplied the Swedish households with gun grease, machine grease and kerosene until 1927. Today the factory is a museum which offer guided tours in the summer.

Thorshammars Verkstad

"Thorshammars Verkstads AB" was registered 1876 and is one of Swedens oldest incorporated company. Todays workshop was build in 1887. At 1900 the employment was at large with 33 workers. The workshop closed 1983 and everything that was left is still there! "Thorshammars" will now turn into a working museum.

Reviewed By Robert A - Dalarna County, Sweden

Engelsbergs Bruk

Engelsberg Ironworks is considered to be one of the world's most important industrial heritage and is since 1993 a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The buildings and most of the technical equipment remains. Waterwheel, crusher, blower and hammers still works and it makes the blast furnace and forge at Engelsberg unique. Today Engelsbergs Ironworks is a museum that offers guided tours.

Reviewed By Fredrik A - Sydney, Australia

In the Swedish Bergsslagen not far from Fagersta you find the World heritage site Engelsbergs bruk. It is a well preserved site with an ironworks, manor and other buildings that normally existed close to an ironworks in Sweden.
The normal open time is in the summer but you can visit at other times as well. We booked our own guide for my family and got a personal showing of the place.
We got the most wonderful woman as a guide, Gudrun. She was a retired former teacher that now worked in Engelsberg, her childhood countryside, as a guide. She could tell memories of her own and gave us a really living picture of everything from the coal storing and ironworks to the owner families. We walked around in all the site and could start the big water wheel to see it working (a noisy funny thing).
I would recommend Engelsbergs bruk (and Gudrun) to everyone that is interested in entering a well preserved historical world.

Fagersta Golfbana

A great and challenging golf course at the Stockholm countryside.
It takes you just 2 hours from the major airports to the course. You will find plenty of B&B’s, holidays cottages and hotels in the region. The course itself is wonderfully situated. During your round you’ll see woods, water and open fields. When playing 18 holes you will find a little cottage between hole 9 and 10 where you can buy some (hot) drinks, candy and sandwiches. The absolute high light – according to me – is the 18th hole – 383 M Par 4 HCP 1 - where you drive from a hill down to two major bunkers and a difficult green. Nice service. During the season, there is even a restaurant.
The prices are low to very modest compared to other golf courses in Europe.
