Eltville am Rhein (German pronunciation: [ˈɛltvɪlə], from Alta Villa, Latin for "high estate, high town", corrupted to Eldeville, Elfeld and later Eltville) is a town in the Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis in the Regierungsbezirk of Darmstadt in Hesse, Germany. It lies on the German Timber-Frame Road (Fachwerkstraße).

We visited Kloster Eberbach on New Year’s Day 2018 as a short excursion from Wiesbaden and were surprised we could get there so easily and quickly by public transportation that day: a short train ride to Eltville and from there less than 15 minutes by bus (N. 172) to the abbey gatehouse. Upon presentation of the bus ticket, visitors receive a discount on entry tickets. Although the weather wasn’t too nice the setting of the abbey in the countryside still offered a splendid view.
Many interiors of the film ‘The name of the Rose’, based on the eponymous novel by Umberto Eco and starring Sean Connery as a Franciscan friar, were shot at Eberbach Abbey, but there is little to remind visitors of this fact. The present-day atmosphere is certainly not dark and mysterious. We had to use our imagination. On the basis of wrong expectations, we were also a bit surprised by the external appearance of the abbey complex. We somehow expected it to look more stereotypically ‘medieval’, but it seemed to be a mixture of Gothic and Baroque style. We did like the sobriety of the Romanesque abbey church, which is completely empty except for some tombstones. The adjoining immense early Gothic vaulted dormitory, accessed by stairs from the church, where the monks slept on the floor on straw matrasses, is absolutely stupendous. For the rest, there isn’t much to be seen. We saw some huge wine barrels and old wine presses and weren’t too impressed with the museum in the former library.
There are guided tours (in German) but visitors are allowed to roam around on their own with an audio guide (another 3.50 euro) or a (not very informative) leaflet in English. So, if you want to know more, bring a good travel guide.
Although there are separate Tripadvisor entries fort the hotel (‘Gaestehaus Kloster Eberbach‘) and the restaurant (‘Klosterschaenke, Pfortenhaus‘) on the grounds many reviewers seem to have posted their comments on both under the general entry ‘Kloster Eberbach’, which is skewing the rating of the abbey.

We rate this weingut as the best in the Rheingau. Their wine tasting area is stunning and the servers are personable and knowledgeable. Both couples bought lots of wine. We were even presented with a more rare older wine that wasn't listed and it was fantastic due to the aging. Everything we drank was superb and difficult to choose which to buy. It was our second time to the weingut. Their sweeter Rieslings are even better than the dry Rieslings. Their wine is not cheap, but it is worth it.

If you love German wine - you do, if you are a tourist in the hearthland of German wine - do not miss this. A modern vinotheque, a wine bistro. There are several wines by the glass (currently 17). All of them are from 3 top Rheingau producers, whose range of wines is also available in the wine store there.
The price per glass is very reasonable for the quality of the wines.
The menu is short: warm soup, cold cuts, and cheeses. But they match with the wine, which is the main point.
A wine enthusiast will also be delighted about the brigth lightning: the halogen spotlights let you clearly see, what you have in your glass.
Pop in to taste good wine. You will probably buy a few bottles to take home, too.

Opened in 1888, the Neroberg Mountain Railway, one of the few funiculars with water propulsion and a true engineering accomplishment, gave us a wonderful experience. Though the ride was of about 4 minutes, the ingenious technique still enthuses the passengers today, as it had done in the former times. Taking us to 245 meters above sea level it provided an amazing view of the Panorama of Wiesbaden and the surroundings. One of the city's most popular leisure-time destinations, the two carriages, about 50 passengers in each, have moved up and down the Neroberg Mountain at 7.3 kilometers per hour. It transports its passengers, estimated 300,000 per year, up and down every 15 minutes. It is the oldest water ballast-driven cog-and-rack railway in Germany. A trip on it made us forget today´s hectic pace. It is like a journey into the past. The kids loved the short trip. Snacks are available at the top. At the time of our visit, wedding celebrations were going on thus providing a romantic relaxation for the participants.

During my walking tour of Mainz with friends, I was advised to look inside the St. Stephan’s church. A lovely interior with unique Chagall blue stained glass windows and an interesting history. While not as ornate as some other churches, worth a look see.

Wir gehen öfters in die zum Weingut gehörende Gutsschänke (Schulstr. 11) in Walluf.
Am liebsten wenn eines der zahlreichen Schlachtfeste (u.a. Schweinepfeffer !) stattfindet. Aber auch ein paar asiatische Alternativen werden von seiner thailändischen Frau angeboten, die man nicht unbedingt in einer Rheingauer Gutsschänke erwartet ! Top ! Die Preise für Speis`und Trank sind moderat, der Lautstärkepegel manchmal in dem recht großen Gastraum etwas hoch. (Was an den hauptsächlich älteren Gästen, meist Einheimische, liegt). Die 3 Parkplätze auf dem Gelände sind schnell belegt und die Suche in der Umgebung ist angesagt. Aber dies mindert nicht den guten Gesamteindruck.

Small castle tower and surrounding buildings located overlooking the Rhine, town of Eltville and surrounding vineyards. The tower built in 1330-50 survives and other buildings 1682-3. Small cost to go up the spiral staircase of the tower with some small exhibits in rooms. Free to wander the grounds, wall that overlooks Rhine and wander down to the moat with rose Gardens.
Best to park well away and wander through Eltville cobble streets and picturesque medieval buildings.

This church is small but lavishly decorated, with interesting carved and painted pews, a dramatic organ (one of the oldest in Germany), lovely stained glass windows, and a lot of little ornamental surprises throughout. Absolutely worth a detour, and a nice alternative to some of the grander cathedrals you may have encountered in your travels.

Beautiful exterior. Seven only passed through the casino area as we aren't gamblers. There is a very central and affordable parking garage underneath. The exterior architecture is certainly picture worthy. You'll end up there of you take in the beautiful Kurpark.
