10 Things to Do in Comala That You Shouldn't Miss

February 18, 2018 Osvaldo Hartline

Comala (Spanish  [ko'mala] (help·info)) is a town and municipality located in the Mexican state of Colima, near the state capital of Colima. It has been nicknamed the “White Village of America” as the facades of the buildings in town have all been painted white since the 1960s. The historic center of the town was declared a Historic Monument Zone and the town became a Pueblo Mágico in 2002. It is the municipal seat of the Comala Municipality, the local governing authority for over 400 other communities, including the former Nogueras Hacienda, the home of artist Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo.

Several people rave about this tour by someone named Jupiter. Our guide, Roberto, took us on the volcano tour. He did not speak English. We live in Mexico and went for a weekend getaway. Unfortunately, five of us were in a van that was fine if you were in the front or the middle. But the rear door rattled so loudly that we couldn't hear the Spanish that we were trying to understand, the legroom was tiny and the guide never tried to help us climb in and out of the back during the frequent stops. Nothing from this website indicates that the trip would be in Spanish. Roberto was also running the inn so he knew that our Spanish was limited. Additionally, the inn supposedly offers breakfast but it didn't while we were there and there was no place open in town for breakfast before the tour started. So we didn't have the opportunity to eat a meal until around 1:00 PM

We try to get up to Comala at least once a year in the winter. The views of the volcano are amazing, the road has been updated and much easier to travel on. Stop along the way, and visit the coffee plantations, and some great restaurants. Most English speaking. Stop in Comala and just sit in the square and people watch. Try to go when cruise ships Are Not in Port less busy.

The garden has some beautiful floral arrangements and there is a landscape of the volcanoes with an archway behind it that makes for great photos. There are also restaurants and goodies surrounding it.

El Tortugugario

This simple nature preserve represents a valuable effort by a new generation to turn around years of ecological neglect. An undermanned facility and less-than-ideal conditions for its captive turtles and alligators testify to a lack of proper funding, but the tortugario remains a worthy place for both research and visitors. Its attraction is two-fold: first, in an impressive lagoon (one of Mexico's largest) teeming with waterfowl, best seen in the morning hours right after opening; and the turtle sanctuary itself, where eggs are careful incubated prior to supervised release increasing the odds of survival. It's a profound experience to hold a newly-hatched turtle barely larger than one's palm and send it on its maiden sea voyage. Hopefully by increasing its numbers, the park can sustain itself in the long term.

Sensational! This is where you will see the real articles. Dug from under a sugar cane farm and preserved and displayed by the founding family. There are repros of some of the pieces on a shopping street near the central Cathedral. ( also near a big parking garage) however, the quality for the most part is poor and touristy.

Plaza Principal

Reviewed By FromTheKootenays - Invermere, Canada

Comala is one of Mexico’s ‘magic’ towns and the Plaza Principal is definitely the focal point of this small unique white-washed town, as central plazas are in most Mexican towns and cities. There’s always activity going on be it vendors, bus tours dropping off clients, or wandering mariachi bands. It’s bounded by shops on one side, a parish church, government buildings and a row of restaurants/pubs on the other side.
Check out the restaurants! For the price of a margarita or cerveza, the restaurants bring a constant supply of different Mexican appies free of charge! We had three rounds of appies and had to finally say ‘no mas’! The drinks are a little higher priced, but worth every peso for the appies provided!

The only thing that I was bummed out about, is the volcano was covered by the clouds the day we visited. It is one of the best views of the majestic Volcanos! Bring your meats and bbq in this eco friendly spot, there are several areas around the lagoon to choose from. Or they have a restaurant on site (closed on Mondays) they also have Cabins for rent to make it a nice getaway. Surrounded by nature, legends and a nice cool weather, it's the perfect spot to escape Colima city's heat! They even have little boats for rent.

Ex Hacienda de Nogueras

Reviewed By cemcc - texas

Our guide’s favorite attraction was clearly the Ex-hacienda de Nugueros, the home, studio and museum of the late naïve artist Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo. His images of angels, their faces as round and sweet as those of China dolls, their costumes reflecting various nations and indigenous tribes, appeared on decades of UNICEF Christmas cards. The eldest son of the family that owned the hacienda, he had declined his traditional position as its jefe, leaving ranch management to one of his brothers while he painted and did graphic design, including stenciled furniture. Hidalgo’s collection of pre-Columbian ceramics put the regional museum’s to shame. He had clearly assembled them with an artist’s eye, as well as a wealthy scion’s resources, and the images of people and dogs were exceptionally detailed and charming. (A couple of them showed the dogs being fed corn on the cob, perhaps to fatten them up.) The interior of the house reportedly was worth seeing, but it and the garden and chapel had been rented for a christening and the related festivities.
