Fronalpstock

Reviewed By jodien657

Walking along the ridge line from Klingenstock to Fronalpstock is one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring walks I have completed; the scenery here dwarfs that of the Lake District, and most places you're able to walk in the UK. Riding the fernicular at 110% is also an incredible experience - what a superb feat of engineering. From there, we took the chairlift to Klingenstock and then began our walk along the ridge line. You can walk the other way but this way is arguably the more challenging and more rewarding - the view before us was much better than that behind us. It's a truly breathtaking and wonderful view but it does come with a hefty price tag - the fernicular and access to the chair lifts aren't cheap. Take your own lunch to save some pennies!

Kloster Einsiedeln

This 1,000-year-old monastery a short drive from the city is home to the Black Madonna Shrine, an important pilgrimage destination.

Reviewed By JennyW619

Kloster Einsiedeln (Einsiedeln Abbey and Monastery) is located about 19 miles southeast of Zürich in the town of Einsiedeln. It was founded by the Benedictine monk Saint Meinrad about 835 and is considered an important site of Roman Catholic pilgrimage in Switzerland. After the canonization of Meinrad in 1039, Saint Meinrad’s relics and remains were transferred from Reichenau to Einsiedeln, and the abbey’s importance as a place of worship and pilgrimage continued to grow. Original structures burned and foundations for a new church were laid in 1718. Additions and restorations have been made over the years. At the time of our visit, extensive renovation of the square in front of the church was on-going. They took care to create walkways for visitors to the church. There are public restroom facilities on site as well as a gift shop. Photos are not allowed inside the church, but books, postcards and other memorabilia are available in the shop at reasonable prices. There was no charge for visiting the church or attached stables.

We visit this park every season. Of course, it is perfect in summer, but our visits were also great in autumn and winter. Great for small kids (2 years and younger). Children can touch and feed animals. Many nice places for picknick and rest in fresh air. Access to bathrooms and drinking water in various spots of the park. In hot summer kids can have fun and enjoy playing with water (there is a special fountain, bring a swimming suit and a towel for your kid). Be prepared to spend min 2-3 hours walking. You will need very comfortable walking shoes which may become dirty (this is a forest) and comfy outfit for you and your kids.

For me, the barrel-shaped carriage is the highlight but not the steepness. The design of these bright yellow carriages is so cool. They look like a caterpillar or a multi-cylinder whistle but certainly not like a funicular. The carriages rotate to maintain a level floor surface for passengers. So I didn’t feel the inclination at all inside the carriage. We took this caterpillar-like funicular to Stoos where we changed to take a ski lift reaching Klingenstock. From there we started the hike for two hours along the mountain range to reach Fronalstock. The scenery en route was beautiful. On the left is Lake Lucerne and on the right is Grosser Mythen (1898m) and Kleiner Mythen (1810m). The countless colourful wild flowers along the track further made the hike relaxing and enjoyable.

Alpamare

Alpamare, a huge water park, is located 30 minutes outside the city. With its 12 waterslides and a total length of 2100m it is the biggest water park of Switzerland. It’s open year-round, and there are all kinds of aquatic attractions, from slides to thermal pools to underwater music and even a meandering river.

I took my daughter to Alpamare for her 8th birthday, we both had a fantastic time, the facilities are clean, the slides are really fast and the staff are friendly. Prior to visiting Alpamare I had read a few reviews claiming it to be unsafe which i completely disagree with. There are clear safety signs displayed where required and if you have a bit of common sense the waterpark is safe and a lot of fun. Too many activities are ruined by overly cautious rules tailored to a small minority lacking common sense, it's great to see Alpamare haven't taken this approach. We will return!
