The hydrangea garden [ わんダフルネイチャーヴィレッジ あじさい園 ] will blow your mind - 15000! Even more than in Kamakura! More colors than I've ever seen!! There's a little 45-minute hiking course that takes you to the top and back where you can get nice views! There are picnic tables at the top and also a little shop selling food closer to the entrance. Quite a few people there but nowhere as crowded as many hydrangea spots in Kamakura. 600 yen to enter. Do not miss! Simply amazing! Dream-like even!

The Akigawa gorge is apparently the whole stretch along the Akigawa river and it is not a particular single spot for easy review, so I am going to highlight our main activity, which was fishing. There is a specific fishing place at (Akigawa international trout fishing) and for 33$ pp you get a permit and a fishing rod, while pretty much everything else (bait, BBQ, wood &coal, drinks) are available for an extra fee (the BBQ for 30$, coal for 10$). They release fish at certain times, but since they had very few people fishing this day (only one other party, but I heard that on special holidays they can get up to 700 people!) they released some for us to get started, and then again at 1pm. With 3 rods we got around 15 fish which they clean for you and then you can put them on the grill (no kind of eating utensils come with the BBQ set). This is a fantastic activity and especially our 10 year old had lots of fun. Not sure how well one would get along there with only English, the owner seems to understand everything that I said, but was too shy to speak, but everyone there was super friendly and even gave us some extra roasted and salted fish to bring home. Highly recommended.
We stayed at Honjin Ryokan for the night and then next day we hiked up to the Hossawa Falls, another nice activity. And then, from the train station about 3km away is a forest area with 10,000 of beautiful Hydrangea.

Enjoy the impressionistic scene colored with Autumn leaves of two gigantic Ginkgo trees. This historical temple built more than 600 years ago is located in Akiruno city, the west side of Tokyo. You will encounter with an environment which you would not believe that it is actually in the prefecture of Tokyo; nothing like metropolitan you would see in TV or Magazine, but all mountain and vally ranges with few villages. The city councils promote several hiking courses along the subtle villages where Japanese traditional lifestyle partly remains starting from the station of Musashi-Itsukaich. You can also take a car for there is a parking space for about 10~15 lots. Enjoy distinctive colors by the four seasons of Japan such as Autumn leaves and Spring blossom.

I asked husband if he wanted to see the Rose Garden near the place I have ESL classes. Seriously, it's about 10 minutes from Yokota base by car, 17 minutes on a bad day. Just a quick getaway on a beautiful day. Here is the cool part of the story...there was a flower festival with live music and dogs every where. So Yes, I was loving life.
A great place to walk, jog, stroller friendly, and senior citizen friendly. If you are pregnant this is a friendly place to hangout, there is a kids play area for small kids. There is shaded spots, public restrooms, picnic tables. This is also a great place to visit during Cherry blossom season. The track field is outlined by Cherry blossoms trees (sorry no photos to post). THERE ARE NO GARBAGE CANS.It is also Wheelchair friendly, and dog friendly.
