Mt. Huangshan

Reviewed By jonih916 - Singapore, Singapore

Not an easy climb but it is well worth it! We didn’t get to see the infamous cloud sea but the views are still amazing. Love the steep cliffs, the many elegant pine trees and the mountain ranges in the background too..both sunrise n sunset were beautiful in its own rights..???? We only managed to see one side of the mountain ranges as it would take at least 2-3 days to cover all..

Worth the steep walk to see such beauty. We walked at least 8km, each view top notched world class. The best scenery so far, quite different from Guilin, which is also a must .

Huangshan Hot Spring

Reviewed By Hat-trickDeb21 - Edina, United States

My son taught english in Nanjing for a year after college and as his stint ended we visited him and in a whirl-wind week visited as many China "must-sees" as possible. Our main goal, other than The Great Wall and The Forbidden City/Tiananmen Square, was to hike Mt Huangshan as we had heard much about the mystical Yellow Mountain and had also seen paintings of it in an art class my wife and I took in college. We were able to hike the mountain but since we were enveloped, up high, in low clouds and mist we missed the best views. NOT a problem as it added to the mystic feel of the place and was nearly a spiritual experience which we named our (thanks Led Zeppelin) "Misty Mountain Hop" . We actually hiked over the mountain to the north beginning at the West Steps and after taking the Taiping Tram, we taxied back to our hotel at Tangkou, nearly an hour's ride, for the ridiculously low price of $40.00! Xigu Resort was our base and after the owner described the hot springs, without being pushy, we were more than ready to sign up. After a day of strenuous hiking, it sounded like the perfect idea to visit one of the Four Wonders of Yellow Mountain. He arranged for us to ride by bus to the hot springs and was more than happy to drive us to the bus stop. Once we got to Huangshan Hot Spring and saw the layout we were extremely glad we had come.....and that was before we got into the pools. The locker rooms were spotless and attendants were at the ready to help with anything one required but without being a nuisance. Numerous pools of different temps and most with naturally infused water including: rose (complete with petals), jasmine, wormwood, bamboo, vitamin C and even wine. The attendants were always ready to help or replace your towel if you moved and the place served grilled meats, beer and other "essentials" for the weary hiker. You could get a massage and for those getting too heated by the pools there is a cold pool that felt fantastic soaking our sore feet and joints in! The Hot Springs were an afterthought during our stay in Tangkou. I now tell people who are traveling to Nanjing that if they have time not only must they hike the mountain but they NEED to hit the Hot Springs (we were lucky enough to visit twice during our three day stay) to enjoy the complete Mt Huangshan experience. Incredible!

Tunxi Ancient Street

Reviewed By yenglee

We were brought here, by our Guide Louise Zhang, for a stroll and sightsee. Instead we found traditional Chinese calligraphy tools- Chinese writing brushes, ink sticks and ink wells. Coloured ink sticks are also available. Learned a lot about brush construction and what to look for. No idea how expensive good ink sticks are - my last purchase was in 1963 from the local stationary shop in Johor Baru, Malaysia! At our request and not as part of the walk, Louise took us to a shop that sold good quality stone seals. I had seals made for my three children. Had to wait overnight but Louise brought the finished products to our hotel next morning. The carving is as good as ones done by craftsmen in Singapore (craft shops, not street side vendors). Very happy with the stones as well, semi translucent and peach in colour. Very enjoyable ramble.

Emerald Valley

Reviewed By Ishimiagi - Shanghai Region, China

Emerald Valley has some of the best nature viewpoints in the area. Each pool has its own natural beauty and characteristics. It has the potential for amazing photos because of the clear turquoise water and rock formations. You don't need to be especially fit to complete this trail. Be careful, there are a lot of insects and spiders on the hand rails - look before you touch.
