N29°42'37.9" E118°18'16.8" (WGS-84) Lonely Planet and Rough Guide consider this the best and most famous restaurant in Old Street, Tunxi District. It is spread over several dining areas, all replete with ornate stone carving, Qing-style furnishings and traditionally dressed staff. Always busy, the restaurant’s cuisine lives up to the decor, and choosing is made easier by the second-floor huicai buffet spread of every dish on the menu.
This is de place to splash out on Huizhou delicacies. We looked at the huicai buffet in August 2017 and wrote down the five-digit number of our appetizing choices. We handed in our order not knowing exactly what we had ordered. It just looked great, but was it braised chicken or braised pork? Awaiting the surprise, we sat down with a beer.
Like all Chinese restaurants, ordered dishes are not served together. We started with the first arrival and one by one, all dishes arrived. The dim sun was excellent, so was the fried pork and chicken dish. The open-face fish was nice, although small fish bones made eating a cautious exercise. All dishes were well prepared and rich with flavours. Staff members did not speak English, but hand signals did the job.
Lao Jie Yilóu Shiyé is a huge and crowded restaurant with an enormous choice of fine Huizhou dishes. Not to be missed for their fine Huizhou food. Recommended.

Mr. Cheng's Restaurant

This place is on the high road, not in the centre of the village, but it is just a 10 minute walk from the river area. It is about halfway between the bus station and the entrance to the mountain.
There is an English menu, and the prices are OK. I had Chicken with Chillies, which was edible. Beer was nice, and at RMB6 a bottle, quite reasonable.
Owner is called Simon, and he’s quite a nice chap, but just ignore all his talk about “Tourist Information”, he is trying to set up transportation, of which he takes a cut. You can get a car on the side of the road easy enough at about half the price, or walk to the Bus Station, and pick up many buses there.

QuanXing Restaurant

Small family run restaurant in Tangkou serving local cuisine, down on the road that runs alongside the river. The name is in Chinese so you'll need to decipher some Chinese characters if you aren't familiar with the language. I've uploaded a pic of the restaurant's card showing the Chinese name. Owner speaks good English and there is an English menu, but we never actually saw it as she just suggested a few dishes. Tasty food but a bit on the pricey side for what you get, although the total bill still only came to 140 RMB for two people. Everyone else in there appeared to be local which is always a good sign. Wu Xin, the owner, also offers tourism info services like maps of Huangshan mountain, routes and bus bookings. We had already gone up the mountain so not sure what these actually entail though.

A very interesting system. Unusual for foreigners.
First, you take a special form and a pen and go to choose your own food.
You choose among fresh fish, vegetables, and a large desk with a variety of dumplings. Once you have chosen, then give written on the form number and names of the dishes, the administrator, and you get a table number.
You're going for your table, and just a few minutes, they start to bring ready-made meals from your list.
They have alcohol, but only local. We prefer tea.
Surprisingly, all the dishes are very tasty prepared!
