10 Things to do Good for Adrenaline Seekers in Canton of Valais That You Shouldn't Miss

February 19, 2022 Osvaldo Hartline

At the foot of the Swiss Alps lies Valais, "the valley." This fabled region is a year-round favorite, with spectacular skiing in the winter and superb hiking in summer. The Matterhorn, the Great St. Bernard Pass and Zermatt are the stars of the area, but glaciers, lakes, mountain paths, castle-churches and a wealth of resorts also beckon. Visit L'Hospice du Grand St. Bernard to see the animals who helped the monks rescue travelers or the Fondation Pierre Gianadda, Roman ruins that now house modern art.

Breithorn

The Breithorn (4,164 m), with its many summits, is a strong, glaciered mountain crest. The normal climb is considered as one of the easiest routes for climbing a four-thousand metre mountain. This tour is a perfect way to get a sense of high Alpine air for the first time but only for surefooted and experienced mountain hikers accompanied by a mountain guide. The tour includes climbing a glaciated four thousand-metre peak, and this is not to be underestimated. In the early morning, one takes the aerial tramway to Matterhorn glacier paradise at 3,883 m. The climb to the top and the descent afterwards lasts about three hours depending on the conditions. Even though the climb is not dizzying, the tour does offer a high Alpine mountain experience where one can live out the feeling of having one’s head already in outer space. •Snow tour on the glacier •The overall difficulty of the tour is given as “L” (easy) •A mountain guide is recommended •Warning: glacier crevasses

Easiest doesn't mean easy. But you can climb a mountain at more than 4000m from sea level. Good shoes, ice crampons, a guide and a rope for the ice field. Take your time (oxygen is limited at this altitude) and you can go climb the last 400m of altitude in 90mn-2h if you are in good physical shape from the cable car station. If I did it, you can. But don't forget getting an experienced person to lead the rope (Local guides are easily available; They are not cheap, but going without experience would be a good way to test the emergency services in Zermatt). In the end, you'll feel at the top of the world!

Eskimos Ski School

Reviewed By CarolineB1972 - Preston, United Kingdom

Just returned from a weeks skiing holiday. My confidence in skiing was quite low and my 18 yr old son hadn't been skiing for 4 years. The excellent teaching by James was superb, he built my confidence so much, I managed to ski the whole way down from the revolving restaurant via the black run by the end of the week. My son was skiing so well by the end of the week and loved it so much he's wanting to go back next month and become a ski instructor himself! James taught us so much in a few days and builds confidence so well. Eskimos service was great, so accommodating with how we split out lessons. Definitely recommend them. Thanks James and Eskimos.

I and my friend had private lessons with Jack over two consecutive days in Zermatt and we could not have been happier. Even though I and my friend were at different levels, Jack managed to keep us both engaged in the lessons and has definitely brought a lot of improvement in our snowboarding skills. He was very easy to talk to, he cared a lot for our safety and comfort on the slopes and he managed to always keep us smiling and positive. I highly recommend him if you want to have an amazing day on the slopes and learn a lot in quite a small amount of time. Looking forward to doing this again!

Premier Alpine Centre is conveniently located at the bottom of the funicular that takes you straight up to the main Nendaz gondola Tracouet. If you opt for the storage option, your ski days are very easy just coming off the gondola or skiing down, straight into the shop and putting your street shoes on, leaving your ski gear there overnight. The staff are very friendly, and they were very helpful in fitting boots for my children and getting all of our skis. There is also a lot of ski clothing and kit onsite in case you have forgotten anything at home or if your little one has lost a glove on the slopes. We highly recommend this ski rental shop for anyone skiing in Nendaz.

Great season on the Altitude Futures work and train ISIA course. Brilliant coaches with Sammy and Alex leading the training program catering for all and they really developed my skiing well beyond what I originally expected for taking the BASI level 3 exams at the end of the season. Awesome group of people around and plenty of support throughout with COVID and Brexit happening too. Can’t wait to be back in Verbier next season to hopefully carry on with the Altitude team.

Not many mountain lakes are just a few steps from the cable car; Daubensee is one of them and it is definitely worth visiting it. The view is amazing and changes every 50m along the loop around the lake. The reflection of the mountains on the water is incredible and there are many spots for nice pics. Therefore, consider more than 2 hours to complete the loop, especially if there is snow on the path. And take some food with you, so you can have a pic-nic with a view, and what a view!
