The Douro Valley

We stayed at the Quinta Monte Bravo, a bit off the beaten track but lovely and Teresa's dinners were far better than at any restaurant we visited in Portugal except maybe one. The sheer beauty of the terraced vineyards and olive groves plus the beautiful and historic river Douro are just amazing! And, yes, this is a UNESCO World Heritage site, which speaks for itself!

Lovely authentic Portuguese town, with plenty of sights to admire while you wander around the town. The Roman Bridge connects both sides of the town and as it is for pedestrians you can stroll slowly and admire the views of the town and the river.

We did the trip to Quinta do Crasto following the road roads from Porto along the Douro river. Only the trip itself is pure gold and deserves its own review. Quinta do Crasto itself is a piece of heaven brought to earth. The place itself, the location, the vineyards, the grapes, its history, the people, their warm manners, all of them are part of this maze of amazing experiences that make up a trip to the Quinta. I can’t praise it enough. What you get is NOT what you expect, it’s times 10. Everything is carefully thought for delight. The visit and explanations are superb, the special care due to COVID is extreme, the food is out of this world, the wine, oh the wine! The wine is tobacco, Chico plate, black pepper, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger, peach and red fruits bottled Indian silk. Their people are angels sent to the Quinta to make you feel a king for a few hours. Thank you Raquel and Juana for taking so much care of us - you are the soul of this place and a huge part of the experience we took with us is due to you.

Quinta de Avessada

Reviewed By Carspre - Wilmington, United States

This lunch was booked for a 105-person Viking River cruise group and did not disappoint. The quinta (vineyard estate) is located on a hilltop overlooking acres and acres of Douro River vines. It was late November, so the colors of the leaves were beautiful. The lunch was held in a beautiful old room with large tables set for 10 or more. We began with a special soup, notable for a historic event. A woman who owned a large number of vineyards at the time of the phyloxera grape disease about 100 years ago, was able to save many small farmers by tiding them over with a nutritious soup she managed to deliver to them. Otherwise, they and their families would have gone hungry and sold their properties at depressed prices. The lady is honored in the region, and this hearty soup, based on her recipe, was our first course. I could see how it was able to sustain those hard-working families! It was also truly tasty. Local wines were served with our meal which was then topped off with several dessert choices. I opted for "Drunken Pears" which were marinated in red wine and sugar. I'm glad I had this local specialty and felt it was a fitting end to a memorable meal. All in all, Viking made a great choice in having us visit this historic quinta. I would love to return some day.
