Bhaktivedanta Manor

In the Hertfordshire countryside just north of London, Bhaktivedanta Manor, complete with its farmlands, beautiful gardens and temple is a real sanctuary for the soul. Open all year round to visitors and students of ancient wisdom, the temple offers a great experience with tours of the shrine, gardens and compassionate farm. See the rooms of the famous Hare Krishna guru Srila Prabhupada, to whom George Harrison gifted this iconic mock Tudor mansion. Visitors may participate in inspirational talks, yoga classes, mantra meditation, vegetarian cooking classes and various retreats.

I try to visit Bhaktivedanta Manor as often as I can through out the year and especially during the Janmastahmi Festival (Krishna's Birthday) which usually falls sometime in August. This is a very tranquil place to visit, with lovely gardens, the pond, the woodland walk, the cow pen where you can purchase greens to feed the cows, and of course the magnificent temple. Such tranquil surroundings and a lovely place to just relax or start your spiritual journey. There are prayer times throughout the day so check their website for details of these if you would like to attend. There is a lovely cafe on site for refreshments, and prashad is always served too. I would highly recommend a visit if you are in the area, you will have a wonderful uplifting experience.

St Albans South Signal Box

How amazing to find that this wonderful signal box has not been destroyed like so many other great railway structures from so called improvements. A marvellous insight into mechanical signalling. Brought back so many memories of my time in Abington Box on the West Coast Main Line between Beattock Summit and Carstairs Junction. Very Happy Days!!

The Forties Experience

The Lincolnsfields Centre is home to the 1940's Experience. We are open to the public the last Sunday of the months January - November and the first Sunday in December. During World War 2 the site was USAAF 8th Fighter Command Headquarters with a room dedicated to the history of the site. The open days will give you an experience of nostalgia, taking you back in time. Walking through the 1940's house you will be able to have a visual and hand on experience. If that's not enough for you, visit the Dig for Victory garden and see how fires were put out during the Blitz. Take a ride in the jeep and experience what it was like to be in London during an air raid and take cover in a shelter. If you need to rest pop in to the NAAFI and have a cup of tea and cake, the girls will always have a smile when serving. On some of the Sundays our residential band "The Mustangs" perform live music. Throughout your visit our excellent team of volunteers will be on hand to answer any questions.

Been a few times to Sunday open days at the Lincolnsfield Centre. Always plenty to see in the 1940's house. Lots of activities like the Blitz experience, Jeep rides and volunteers to share their knowledge (many are in authentic soldier uniforms with weapons!). There's a naafi canteen. Great bonus on the last Sunday in every month, there's a live band playing 1950's/60's rock'n'roll. It's included in entry price so you can just stroll in & listen to the music or even dance! Singers & song choices really good. Lots of fun on a sunday afternoon.

Nast Hyde Halt

Reviewed By therichastill - Stevenage, United Kingdom

Nast Hyde Halt is just on the edge of Hatfield. If you walk along the Alban Way from Hatfield Galleria it will only take you about 15 minutes to reach it. The station has been beautifully restored and the platform is well presented with the station sign and hedges. There is also a tiny piece of railway track to remind you that trains used to run along this route. There are lots of signs and posters to check out at the station and in the area. Watch out for ghost trains! Hats off to Mike who has done an AMAZING job of looking after the station.

St Albans Cathedral

St Albans Cathedral is the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain. It stands over the place where Alban, the first martyr, was buried after giving his life for his faith over 1700 years ago.The building itself is a blend of architectural styles spanning a millennia and contains recycled Roman bricks from Verulamium. Of special interest are the 13th century wall paintings, a rare watching loft and the shrines of Saint Alban and Amphibalus, the priest who converted Alban to Christianity.

Another addition to my visits to Pre 1500 Cathedrals.. This one is more Norman than Gothic... Great history here... The volunteer guides are so helpful, knowledgeable and very friendly... Make sure you go on a guided tour.. at the time of my visit they were displaying the "Black Jesus" Last Supper painting... As for parking.. I suggest going to the Maltings Car park.. just a 5 to 10 min walk (depending on how quick you walk) to the Cathedral.

Welwyn Roman Baths

Tunnel through time to the world of the Romans - with a visit to Welwyn Roman Baths. You can't take a hot bath any more - the boiler went out about 1,800 years ago when the Romans left! But you can see some fascinating remains which have survived from their time. Learn about how the Romans liked to relax with an elegant culture of bathing, and admire their creativity and style. The bath house remains are a scheduled ancient monument and were once part of a fine villa. The layout of the cold, warm and hot rooms and the heating system are remarkably well preserved. The baths are ingeniously preserved in a steel vault under the A1(M) motorway. You can find out how this vault was built. Also on display are archaeological finds from the Welwyn area and an exhibition devoted to the history of the site, which was uncovered during the 1960s and 70s by the Welwyn Archaeological Society. Welwyn Roman Baths are open Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays and 7 Days a week during Hertfordshire School Holidays 2-5pm PLEASE NOTE WE ARE CLOSED THROUGHOUT DECEMBER.

Great hidden gem and well worth a visit if in Hertfordshire. £3.50 entry worth it as the site is very informative and gives a good description of what you are looking at (less than a pint as well). A must.
