Breakfast tables labelled occupied but no one on the table

So,I did a 3 days 2 night stay at Shangri la Rasa Sayang..It was a family gathering. We walked in for breakfast on 5/6/22 at 7.45 in the morning looking for a long table and somewhere near the buffet area so the elder ones need not walk too far to grt to the buffet area.My eyes caught a table which was empty, and i was gonna sit there as it fitted my family well but it was labelled occupied with no one sitting on it.So i asked the usherer n she told me it is occupied, but i told her no one is sitting there..and she told me again in raised voice, it is occupied!About half an hr after we were seated at a middle table where it was quite humid n my daughter even got a mosquito bite, a family comes in and occupies the place with no questions asked. My question is why is there favouritsm/booking system, i dunno racism?? and labels such as occupied in a 5 star hotel for "certain" guests. It should be a first come first serve basis. We all woke up early so we could get good seats and instead we had to undergo this.It was a good holiday till this happened.Leaves you with a bitter taste in your mouth.Do not think I will revisit this place again!!I dont think i got my money's worth!!

Eastern & Oriental Hotel

The Eastern & Oriental Hotel is the embodiment of both a special time and a special place. For well over a century, this remarkable hotel - known simply as 'The E&O' to generations of travellers - has stood as a testament to the grand elegance of the British colonial era. In many ways, it has also come to represent Penang itself; its story inextricably woven into the island's history, its traditions an indelible part of many a traveller's treasured memory, its name synonymous with the magical island once known as The Pearl Of the Orient.

Second time at this beautiful hotel. We had a ground floor premier suite in the Heritage Wing. The room was nicely decorated with a lounge area opening onto the terrace. The bathroom was large with a big tub, but no bath foam as the amenities were in the shower and not movable. That was disappointing as a bath with no bubbles is pointless! The menu was almost identical in all the restaurants, pool and in the room. It was quite limited but ok as we only stayed for 3 nights. Staff were all great, very friendly and professional. I also loved the Heritage Wing pool. It was never very busy despite the hotel being full when we arrived. We will definitely be back again!

3rd time back. GSR used to be legendary.

3rd visit. There's something different about this place after 4 years of being back here. The first two times, 2016 and 2018 were spectacular. There were way more activities and The Kid's Club was up and running then. Not this time, post-lockdown. This time, it wasn't crowded as we were there just before the mid year school holidays started. Good timing for us. There isn't the ice cream freezer anymore at breakfast. Breakfast spread was pretty much the same over a few days. However, quality of food is better than some 5 star hotels I've been in KL, taste wise. No complaints about the room (I had the Exec Seaview, King). The premise is kept clean and the staff were great. I could tell that there were lesser staff than before. I would like to honor the staff members who do their best at their job including housekeeping. Just a tad sad that we don't get that excitement to return anymore. GSR used to be known to me as committed with the kid's activities. Without the Kid's Club, it's lost its cool factor. I could be in Desaru or Langkawi. Another thing they had taken off is the free shuttle bus that used to go to Stairs Quay Mall and Gurney. This place was once legendary to me. Thanks for the memories. Once again, thanks to all the staff members. Keep it up.

In need of a refurbishment

Breakfast is the worst i’ve had in asia if you like chinese food for breakfast it’s fine but apart from eggs and toast there’s nothing else for the westerners, they have gone out there way and give us 4 packets of butter a day and i think that was because they had seen we had brought our own as they only have margarine in a bowl, fruit is melon and dry pineapple, asked for a cappuccino and was told we had to pay extra for that. The lobby bar is only open at certain times and when it’s the barman’s days off doesn’t open at all, and there’s no other amenities at the hotel apart from the pool which is kept nice as are the grounds. The rooms are clean but in need of an upgrade the furniture is very tired.

Welcome drink was average, only non-alcoholic drinks. Linens were very used and old, and pillows were old and require replacement as well. Staff were only 6/10 polite. Room was clean so that is a +ve point. No bottled water in-room. Should sell bottled water downstairs as there is no convenience store nearby. Beach requires some cleanup by staff. Property is quite old and worn in general. Very very average.

A very nice hotel to stay

We were here twice...in April and now, ened of May 2022. It's quite a pleasant hotel to stay. It may be over 20 years old but it's upkeeping is in tact. Staffs are friendly, especially, Leona in the restaurant. She makes an extra effort to keep all customer satisfied despite a huge crowd during breakfast. She's a gem to this establishment. The rooms are spacious and clean. The beach in front of the hotel is a good place to enjoy. This hotel is located near convenient shops, bakery, eateries and a car workshop.
