Leaving from Capolago-Riva San Vitale railway station, by Lake Lugano, you'll soon reach the steep slopes of Monte Generoso and its enchanting mountain train which opened in 1890. After an enchanting forty minute journey through the unspoilt natural landscape, you reach the base of the summit (1704m). From this point you can enjoy one of the most thrilling 360° panoramas anywhere in Switzerland. The view of the Alps is unique, and gives you a wonderful 'birds eye view' across the north of Italy, the Lakes region and the alpine chain.Follow the circular trail to discover the ten or so "nevere", ancient versions of our modern fridges. These fascinating cylindrical stone buildings were built by the farming communities to preserve their milk before making it into butter and cheese. This little concentration of these remarkable structures is unparalleled anywhere else in Switzerland. From the station at the top, you can also follow the path along the eastern ridge which arrives firstly at the Nadigh alpage and, shortly after, through a pretty level section flanked by limestone slabs from the local quarries, the Genor alpage. Immediately after, the trail heads gently back up to the railway station, from where you can take the little train again once again to descend to Capolago.

Monte Generoso is situated in the heart of a nature park known beyond Switzerland’s borders. Standing majestically on the mountain’s rugged plateau is the new “Fiore di pietra“ (stone flower). The building was created by the famous architect Mario Botta and features picture windows that frame the breathtaking panorama. Two restaurants flooded with light and a conference room with magnificent mountain views provide the ideal setting for fine dining, unforgettable family celebrations and exceptional corporate events. The “Fiore di pietra” is designed so that a partition wall can section off a separate room for up to thirty guests. Since 1890, a rack railway has provided transport along a picturesque nine-kilometre stretch of mountain scenery carrying passengers from Capolago on Lake Lugano to the mountain summit at 1704 m altitude. Monte Generoso offers visitors plenty of opportunities for relaxing strolls, more demanding hikes and for delving into history.

The cave, where an important repository of remains of over 500 cave bears (ursus spelaeus) were found, is situated on the eastern side of Monte Generoso. These lived and became extinct on Monte Generoso between 30-50'000 years ago. The cave has been prepared in a way that enables everyone, not only paleontologists, to visit

The Motta Valley Park extends over 163 hectares between Coldrerio and Novazzano. Its perimeter encloses the Roncaglia River as well as woods and agricultural areas, thus making up an interesting landscape from the aesthetic point of view which is rich in naturalistic content. Suggestions for recreational and didactic activities are included in this package.
