10 Museums in Luxor That You Shouldn't Miss

November 26, 2021 Diedre Savory

The Luxor in Las Vegas is to the actual CITY of Luxor, Egypt, as marshmallow fluff is to fois gras. (We’re sure you knew that. We just enjoy analogies.) Sure, the hotel/casino in Vegas might have a beam of light visible from space, but we bet you'll find a hot-air balloon ride over the Valley of Kings much more illuminating. (Editor's note: Our list was compiled before political unrest prompted many countries to issue travel warnings for Egypt. If you're currently planning a trip to Egypt, please consider the risks and monitor your government's travel alerts.)

Best shop in Luxor for hand crafts and souvenirs. Some really lovely stuff. Fixed price. Genuine no hassle. The owner just left us look around while he sat and played his guitar outside. Found it by accident on the West Bank of the Nile. Recommend taking the public ferry and avoiding all the touting for business by the motor boats and fellucas. Peaceful trip after all the hassle and tat in Luxor souk.

Nobles Art Gallery

Nobles Art Gallery is the best store in Luxor if you are looking for quality statues and sculptures from the late 19th/early 20th century, vintage jewelry, Islamic copper jars and trays and more. Nobles Art Gallery is situated at the famous 19th-century (Sofitel) Old Winter Palace and a part of our collection is exhibited in the Victorian room.

We really enjoyed our time shopping here in this Gallery. The store owner was friendly, "no hassle" and helpful. The collection here is high quality and prices were reasonable. I would recommend coming in here to have a look! It would be a worthwhile experience, especially if you are staying at the Winter Palace Hotel.

Luxor Museum

A museum featuring items found beneath the Luxor Temple, and from the tomb of King Tut. Also on exhibit is a re-assembled wall from the Temple of Aten.

Reviewed By 994linday - Frisco, United States

The Luxor Museum prides itself on the quality, not the quantity, of its artifacts. The collection is beautifully curated among two floors, displayed in an uncluttered manner with each piece clearly labeled. Quite a contrast to the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Cairo, where I was totally overwhelmed by the experience. Luxor has two royal mummies on display, so if you’ve never seen a mummy, here’s your chance! I admit it’s creepy, but the Egyptians were masters of mummification and it was normal to them.

I have visited Caravanserai several times when in Luxor. Most of their items are locally made and they have a big range. There is no hassle from the friendly staff but they are there to help if needed. Highly recommended for gifts and momemto’s of Egypt.

Mummification Museum

Reviewed By sipivu - Paris, France

This is a small and very interesting museum. We spent about 45 minutes visiting it. It is really worth it, and everything we enjoyed everything we saw. However, be very careful and avoid the book/giftshop right next to the museum: its owner tries to get as much money as he can from you, without hesitating to state obvious ridiculous lies constantly. For example, he tried to convinced us that a cheap plastic small 10 cm statue probably made in China for 50 cents was worth $40 because it was painted by hand!!!!!! He also tried to attract us by saying he would discount his products by 20% while only reducing the price by 5%, and even though the realistic price would only be 10-20% of the price he was trying to sell for all his products. He has nothing that you can't find elsewhere. If you go there, just be careful.
