10 Literary, Art & Music Tours in Cape Town Central That You Shouldn't Miss

September 30, 2021 Cedrick Jardin

Cape Town glistens at the southern toe of the African continent. Tourist brochure-views at Blaauwberg Beach and Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens are within easy driving distance of "The Mother City." The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve provides sweeping sea vistas, hiking trails and wildlife encounters. On a more somber note, travelers can visit Robben Island, the prison where Nelson Mandela was held for 27 years.

I had found Coffeebeans Routes and more specifically the Jazz Safari on TripAdvisor. I contacted them to make arrangements and told them that since the evening includes dinner they need to know that we don't eat meat so vegetarian or fish is preferable. Not a problem was the reply! We met our guide for the evening at a small guest house in Cape Town and he gave us a bit of the background of jazz in Cape Town. We looked around for other participants and he told us that we are it - a private tour! First we went for about a 20-30 minute drive to a suburb called Wynberg, to the apartment of Eldred Schilder. Eldred and his wife were wonderful hosts, and true to the communication from Coffeebeans, dinner was fish and vegetables with homemade bread and a bottle of wine. Eldred played about six of his own compositions on his standup double bass and on his electric bass. I hope that his neighbors in the apartment complex like his music as much as we did. Then we went off to the Gugulethu township to the home of Blacki Tempi. Blacki is a trumpeter who was accompanied by his friend Richie on the keyboard. They made wonderful music together and we were happy that Blacki had a CD for us to purchase to take home. Blacki's wife also served us some very nice homemade ginger beer. This was a most enjoyable night. It was a unique experience to visit the homes of accomplished jazz musicians and eat and drink with them while listening to their music. This is not something that you can do everyday and it is one of the highlights of our trip to Cape Town.

This may be a great tour except for the fact that we had payed 3 months in advance for it and because of covid we had to cancel the trip to South Africa. About 2 months before the trip we contacted them asking for a refund and it was agreed on a 90% refund since we were cancelling with over 72 hours of the tour, so we waited and nothing was done about it, we contacted them again and they said "they were sorry" but that was it. We are not asking for anything but our right based on their policy, but it seems like they are not too worried about keeping up with their side of the deal. In case they decide to do what is right we would update this post, but as of now nothing has been done.

This is just for an audio tour NOT entrance to the gardens which we had to pay for when we arrived. The audio tour, we were informed by the cashier, NO longer exists when they tried to scan the bar code on the ticket so this is a misleading product not worth purchasing!!
