Traditional hotel with all mod cons

We loved this hotel! Initially it felt very old fashioned but we realised that it's more traditional modern. All the sockets in our room had USB ports and the very traditional looking bathroom worked really well. Our room was a bit small but worked well for us and the lift is tiny - so a real problem when the coachloads of US/Canadian tourists are arriving or leaving. Fortunately we were on the 1st floor but it was still a drag to take our cases up and down. Special mention to the breakfast which was amazing - great buffet, including fruit scones, and a very full menu of hot options. I'm kicking myself that I didn't take advantage of the hot porridge, served with a choice of whiskey to "take the edge off the day". Fabulous and very old school - would have loved that breakfast in that wonderful room every day of our week long tour of Ireland. The staff on reception were very lovely and had lots of suggestions of things to do on our next tour stop (Kinsale). We did the Epic Viking Tour while we were there and would thoroughly recommend it

Despite the relatively nice view of the waterfront, I could hear my neighbour's snore filling the entire room for the whole night as if they were in the same room. Don't book a room in this hotel if you want to get a good night's sleep.

overnight visit

I booked on the internet and when i arrived i was meet at reception and checked in very quickly, the lady running reception was very efficient. The room allocated to me was quiet and located at the back of the hotel. The room was very clean, tidy and welcoming. Having ventured out for the evening and arriving back quite late "After 12" i needed to gain access with the night porter, the lady arrived within a couple of minutes, Pleasantly asked if i had had a good evening and wished me a good night, the bed was very comfortable and i had a great night's sleep. I arrived down earlier than booked for Breakfast and that was no problem, the Staff in the restaurant were lovely and nothing was a problem for they. i watched and listened to the manager training in some new staff in a most professional way and also appeared to be complementing the other staff for doing their job well, a class set of management skills. Check out was easy and after a short chat about my plans for the day with the receptionist i was on my way. i would have no hesitation staying here again. Lovely experience, lovely people.

Great location

A great location for walking round the city. Having a parking space is good, but it can not be guaranteed and so I always got back early from my days out to get a spot. The rooms are a bit basic but I didnt mind as I was spending most of the time elsewhere. The breakfast whilst decent quality really was a very small portion that required me to buy a second breakfast elsewhere each day

Excellent staff - drab property

Reviewed By Richardthetraveler99

The staff at the Viking are excellent. From check-in to restaurant/bar, they were probably some of the most attentive in our two week trip across Ireland. I can't say enough about them. The property itself has ample free parking. The main lobby is inviting enough. However, once you get into the area with the rooms, it reminds me of a college dormitory. The hallways are dark and narrow. The carpet is tired. We booked an "upgraded" room of Executive King. The room is old with very old dormitory-like furniture. For example, the desk appeared to be made of oak with the finish pealing and several old burn marks in the wood. The bed was awful. It was super hard (I like hard beds - this was way too hard). It was also a "king" which meant they pushed two smaller beds together. Lying on the seam where the beds came together was terrible. The carpeting was thin and dirty. The bathroom was dated but clean. The shower and sink had excellent water pressure. The shower has one of those 1/2 glass doors which is so popular these days. The bar area is bright and service was excellent. The restaurant is attached and is very bright with several large screen TV's playing sports games. The food and service were very good. The seating has several different options in case you are traveling alone. We had the free breakfast in the morning. There were plenty of options and everything was well stocked. Servers were there to ensure everything stayed stocked and cleaned up used dishes etc. The location is convenient off of the highway but you will need to drive to get to the city center. It is about a 10 minute drive. If you are worried about Covid, the staff at the Viking were the best at wearing masks. Everyone wore one and wore it properly. We aren't Covid sensitive but I mention this here for those that are. Overall, this property has its pros and cons. If you are OK with a dated room and an uncomfortable bed, this could be an option for you. For us, we won't be back as there are many other options in the area.

MANAGER NOT AT ALL WELCOMING....WAS SENT AWAY DESPITE BOOKING..

Reviewed By FIOC2157

I booked a nights stay for one person on a Tuesday night in June...the price quoted was 94 euro but when I arrived I was told the room now cost 98 euro and that the prices change constantly...it was a bit expensive for one person staying alone but I was happy to pay it to ensure a nice restful night... I made a special request for a room in a quieter part of the building and was quite disappointed when the receptionist handed me the key to Room 2 .. obviously right next to the entrance which I wasn't happy about being very tired from travelling...I hadn't received any email to say that this room next to the front desk was the only remaining room...if I'd known I'd never have booked it as I was only checking into a hotel to get some rest ..normally I'd stay at a guest house or AIR BNB... The receptionist didn't know what to do when I said I'd rather not stay in room 2.. She called the manager...he eventually arrived. I explained my predicament...he told me that..despite the hotel having 56 rooms they had NO OTHER ROOM TO OFFER ME...sorry madam but that's it.. I was informed that ALL ROOMS WERE OCCUPIED...this turned out to be untrue as on the website indicated that several rooms remained to be booked...as far as I could see they were..ALL FURTHER FROM THE FRONT ENTRANCE THAN NUMBER 2...they also cost 10-20 euro less than my unsuitable room number 2 next to the front entrance.. I wasn't offered any other option whatsoever and the manager then getting frustrated and annoyed that I wouldn't just accept room 2 and shut up..he did everything he could to get rid of me continually stating that HE DIDNT LIKE MY TONE..and that he FOUND ME VERY HOSTILE..when I continued to look for a more suitable option he INSTRUCTED THE RECEPTIONIST TO REIMBURSE THE MONEY ID PAID ...without first explaining they intended to do this and that I might find myself WITHOUT THE 100 EURO Id paid for UP TO 5 DAYS....as I'm on a very tight budget this was a real issue for me.... particularly as I HAD TO REBOOK ANOTHER STAY AT A ALTERNATIVE HOTEL.. As I wasn't leaving fast enough for him he called the police who presumably would force me to leave...what a joke..IM A 65 YEAR OLD WOMAN!!! On a previous occasion when I could find no accomodation whatsoever in Waterford city the same manager told me he may have to CALL THE GARDAI ON ME...just because I enquired about booking one single room for one night during the time when some Covid restrictions were in place...I narrowly missed spending a night in a cardboard box due to the ridiculous insistence everywhere that only hospital workers and front line workers could reserve a room in hospitality..anywhere...I'm a healthy mature teacher who finding the lease up in her mouldy damp Tramore flat was merely looking to pay for a one night stay at a regular hotel with many rooms...I was turned away with no apology or suggestion as to any other options that might be open to me..a taxpaying law abiding covid restriction respecting 65 year old teacher.. Two years down the road with the country supposedly reopened I still find myself unable to access ANY SUITABLE ACCOMODATION despite being a fully paid up member of society and recipient of job seekers benefit.. I certainly WOULD NOT RECOMMEND A STAY AT TRAVELODGE WATERFORD at the present time..though I did have a pleasant nights stay there some years ago..
