Apartments not great
Reviewed By Peter HStayed just one night. Breakfast was very basic, and probably better to just get your own. The apartment was very small and was good for one night, but would not stay more than that. Smell of sewage in the bathroom. The surroundings are nice and tranquil. Friendly and helpful staff.

Reviewed By synergidansThe standard room was awful , it overlooked some abandoned furniture and was soulless, dark and tiny. My husband actually rang reception to upgrade my room as a present and it was lovely. The décor was very Peaky Blinders , the bed was comfy and it felt much fresher and airier than the dank single bedded monstrosity I had previously . When was the last time you saw a single bed without a headboard anywhere other than a hostel ? The staff were also friendly but varying in experience. The upgrade was actually a present from my husband, however I ended up paying for it myself as they charged my card instead of his , which my husband laughed about . Back to the service ...I called whilst parked outside to get directions to the free parking and I was told to find the local burger joint as they had 24 hour parking. I was not given an address to use with sat nav and had to find it myself. After dragging my heavy suitcase through town to the hotel, I then read a sign telling me that I can have free parking from the hotel across the street at co-op !. This means for the duration of my stay and not having to move my car after 24 hours . So I checked in , got my parking pass and moved my car to the hotels free car park, Very annoying after a long drive and traversing through snow showers on arrival. The other annoyance was being told the wrong time for breakfast, I arrived at 6.40am to be told that the restaurant was not opened until 7.30 , however some guests were eating early at 7 . I decided to wait until it was opened and realised that the receptionist was eating breakfast herself, whilst I sat waiting , undoubtedly from the restaurant At 7 I asked to enter the restaurant and along with another family had a pleasant enough experience. However, I had to find lots of forks myself to use for serving and placed them in the sauces, beet salads and other stations ...your welcome ! I also noticed that there were no cards to describe the food selection , which is unusual in a hotel at this price band. I had no cards or I might have helped them out with that too lol We have a great saying in Scotland " A fur coat and no knickers" which is what this hotel was sadly . The décor in the public spaces and superior rooms was Instagram ready , however the mixed service let the experience down . I have stayed in much simpler hotels that had a better overall experience on account of the customer care .

Perfect location for Astrid Lindgren’s World
Reviewed By thomaslU5011GVJust a few minutes walk from Astrid Lindgren’s World this place has a perfect location. We stayed in a nice, spacious cottage with kitchen, a/c and 5 beds. Shopping nearby, so you don’t have to go for the optional breakfast although it is convenient and nice. Bring linens or pay for it, we did the latter.

Reviewed By attidudeFor almost $100 you'll get a prison cell sized cabin with NO WATER, reeking from earlier guests whatever... Paying extra for the pool and hot water showers really adds to the substandard experience. I've rarely had worse even travelling SE Asian backcountry...

Small but neat
Reviewed By Dona_NilsWe were a family of 7 so we booked two cottages close to each other. The cottages had four twi storey beds, a table, for cgairs and a little kichenett - everything in one little room. Not so much space and not so cheep. Public facilities areas were very comfortable and clean with lots of place for everyone. We enjoyed our stay in the cottage village for two nights. It is very close to the Astrid Lindgren's World park and quite comfortable. Children were happy, they made friends and played football and mini golf. There is a little shop to buy necessities there too.

Reviewed By teaki78089We decided to visit Astrid Lindgren Park on our trip through Sweden and had problems to find an affordable hotel during holiday season in Vimmerby. So finally I decided to give the Bjorkbackens Stugby a try even after reading kind of negative reviews here on Tripadvisor and other places. In short: The place is better than the other reviews would suggest. My family with one 6 year old daughter loved it. The place consists of 45 little houses that can accomodate maximum 6 people. However I personally would not recommend it to more than 4 since space is limited. The houses have electricity but do not have running water so they also do not have a tolet or shower. Running water can be found at multiple stations, toilets, showers, washing machines, dryers, microwaves etc. can be found at the main house which is about 100m walking distance from the furthest away house. You need to bring linens, bed sheets and towels on your own or rent them for an extra fee. Cushions and blankets are provided. You also need to clean the house at check-out or order a cleaning service one day before check-out for 300 Krones. There is a large playground, a restaurant, a small shop and a large pool area within the community. The pool is an additional 80 Krones per person per stay - so if you stay more than one day you only pay once. What we loved - really good beds ... we had one of our best nights on our trip here - Nice setup with the outside patio - cozy for warm evenings outside while your kids are already in bed - park your car next to the house so great for re-arranging luggage on a longer trip - free WiFi in some places - large fridge inside your house - easy to find outside of the town but still only 5 minutes away from Astrid Lindgren Park. There is a large supermarket not far away either so (re-)stock for breakfast. - kids love the beds over the entrance door What we did not like - it is still a bit akward to get up by night, get dressed and walk down the road if you need to pee - electricty is connected with a chain of power outlets in series... which seems to be a fire hazard. This would be never up to code in US or Germany. - Some of the houses are next to a heavy traffic road... not much traffic by night but starts early in the morning We had house 27 and paid 770 Krones a night for two nights.

The worst Hotel ever in Sweden
Reviewed By Andreas BWe (Familiy with one Child) booked this Hotel over a Travel Agency as part of a round Trip through Sweden. Please avoid booking this Hotel, its the worst we have ever stayed in. No closet, the room had a view to a Mini-Golf facility. The third bed for the child was unusable so that our daughter had to sleep in our bed. Very noisy (loud music from below) and the hotel has an atmosphere that you could call creepy. This hotel is a mess.

Perfect combination with Astrid Lindgren's World
Reviewed By KeskitaloIn combination with Astrid Lindgren's World this is a 5 (and if you are reading this review that is probably what you are interested in, thus the rating). But, compared to other places elsewhere Smalandsbyn is a bit expensive considering the standard of living. If you are a family with small children and you are considering Smalandsbyn for some other purpose I would rate it as a 4. If you don't have children, it is a 3. The place is truly unique with old (200 years or so) Swedish houses painted in Astrid Lindgren story colors. There are a lot of details from the children stories. My favorite was the picture of Ida up in the flag pole. The standard might be lower than what some people expect, but it is a part of the experience :) The one thing that irritated me was that we could not get the cabin dark and that disturbed my sleep somewhat. The playground is excellent for children and there are goats to feed (fun for small children). There are also some electric cars that can be driven for 10 crowns. We didn't really like the breakfast, but that is because we don't really like to eat bread in our family. There were different kinds of bread and yoghurt and not much else to choose from. We would have wanted at least boiled eggs as a complement. Some Swedish porridge would also have been a nice addition. You can rent grills which is a great dinner alternative if the weather is nice. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

Great amenities but lack lustre restaurant

The hotel is really utilised by over-spill from Astrid Lindgrens Warld and nowadays it seems to almost entirely cater towards larger family groups with young children. The rooms are functional, clean, modern and simple. The restaurant has changed a good deal since out last visit two to three years ago. The menu has been stripped back and is over minimalist; 1 starter, 3 mains, 1 dessert are the limited choices. One of the mains is a burger. The food is reasonable standard. The service is not brilliant, although friendly and well intention it is poorly managed. There is long pauses between courses and it was impossible to get attention. If you are looking for a finer dining experience go elsewhere. The main attraction is the amenities, gold course, driving range a small lake and plenty of other things to do (pool table, outdoor chess etc).
