They cancelled my reservation without telling me
Reviewed By JS-norThe title says it all. I arrived at 23:30 in the evening, only to find out they had cancelled my reservation. They hadn’t called, texted or emailed me, and they hadn’t even arranged for a room in a different hotel. Stay away from this hotel unless you want to risk standing empty-handed in the middle of the night without a place to stay.

Fab hotel
Reviewed By JuliaMylo31A lovely little hotel. The rooms are basic but clean and perfect for us as we didn't want to spend all day in the hotel. Location was fantastic, it's a 10 Min walk (max) to the castle. Everything else is within 5 mins. Rooms - basic, we had a double room which was two single beds, pushed together. The beds were really comfortable. Little tip request a room near the back of the hotel, the morning deliveries and bin collection can be a little loud. The bathroom was very small, but had everything we needed. The shower was brilliant nice and hot and very powerful. Fresh towels were provided daily. The cleaning staff were great, they were alway happy to help. The room also had a hair dryer and desk. The sauna which is located near room 115 is brill, it's opened 3pm - 10pm. It's a decent size and very clean. There is also a jacuzzi however it was out of order during our visit. There is also a little sun terrace off the sauna and jacuzzi which is lovely for relaxing and people watching. The breakfast was fantastic, a really good buffet, much better than the ones UK chain hotels have. They also have a while range for vegan's, lactose intolerance, wheat intolerance etc there is something for everyone. The staff were amazing, they were all so friendly and happy to help. Jeanette in particular is fantastic, nothing was to much trouble. Jeanette helped us book taxis, sort rooms and anything else we needed. She is a superstar! Thank you Jeanette! Overall a basic but brilliant hotel that provides a great base to explore Kalmar!

Better than you might think
Reviewed By PonjeSScandic Kalmar West is not a pretty hotel. It's not in a nice location but I knew that before I went. Accessibility is good. Ample parking, pleasant staff, smooth check in and out. Breakfast was plentiful and tasty. Stronger black tea would be the only improvement. The room was quite small and basic but clean and comfortable. The biggest surprise was how quiet it was considering it was next to a motorway. Whoever did the soundproofing deserves a medal. Full marks to the friendly, polite staff too!

Cheap…for a reason
Reviewed By 575lelandkMy husband booked this hotel and it seems he made the decision based strictly on the price. We pre-paid $120 and it was far from worth that. When we arrived, the check-in desk is actually the hotel bar. Different, but ok. The woman at the front desk was either new or lost. I should have known how rough the room would be when handed metal keys. One key was for the room door and one was for the exterior door. She explained that they close and lock the door from 10pm to 7am and it is the guest’s responsibility to unlock the door of coming in during that time. (Please note, this hotel is also conveniently located close to the prison.) When we got to the room, I was absolutely floored with how old the room was. We stayed in different hotels in Sweden during our week-long stay. Many are older (historic) but they have been updated. This hotel needs to be gutted. The bathroom was the smallest I’ve ever seen in a hotel. The strip below the door is 4-5 inches tall and will cause most to trip each time you walk in and out. There is rust all around the very high tub. The slippers left to use were stained and gross. As stated in another review, there is a basket of treats with no pricing that some will confuse as complimentary but it is the mini-bar. I saw that management told another reviewer that there is a card in every room and I can assure you there was not a card. At checkout, the employee asked if we ate anything from the mini-bar. We called down and asked for pillows and they said it would take an hour to bring them. That would have been fine, but they never showed up. Spend the extra money and stay somewhere that you can walk on the floor without concern.

Cheap, small, warm and noicy
Reviewed By TorulvThe hotel is cheap and located in a walking distance from city center. The room was small and the toilet super tiny (60 cm X 125 cm). There is no air condition, which is a problem in summer. We had to keep the window wide open, with a lot of noice and still a too warm room. The walls are thin so you also hear the neighbour snorching. Beds are small. this is not the place for a long sleep but for one night its ok

Great budget option for high season. Our room was quite small with two single beds and a bit airless, and had a shared bathroom.

Mixed Feelings
Reviewed By Marty MWe were recommended this hotel by a friend who lives in Kalmar and so we had high hopes for a nice stay. We had tried to book a room in the main hotel but unfortunately, it was booked out, so we opted for their budget accommodation in a building across the road. The photos looked nice. the main building was quite beautiful and we were greeted at reception with smiles and enthusiasm. Ebba, one of the staff gave us a brief and interesting history of the building and its original owners, so we felt like we were off to a good start. Our room was neat at first glance but noticed that it was sparsely decorated and had no bedside tables, which we thought was a little odd. The bed seemed nice and comfortable which made us happy. After returning from dinner that evening we found a number of issues in the bathroom that seemed un-exceptable. The shower was extremely basic. The shower curtain was old, there was soap build up on the shower window and door, the shower soap was empty, the basin was loose and the glass shelf above it was also loose and rested on on angle. You had to put the glasses to the back of the shelf to prevent them from sliding off. We also found nuts of some kind on the floor under one of the chairs. What came next was greatly disappointing. Upon pulling back the doona on the bed we saw 3 silverfish skuttle across the sheet. Although we had a laugh, it was certainly not what we expected. Aside from that, we slept ok and the next morning we very much enjoyed the breakfast they had on offer. It was all very fresh and all very tasty. I went to reception as a coutesy to let them know the issues we had experienced and although the young girl wrote down what I told her explaining she would let management know, we were not offered an apology. That surprised me considering we are both seasoned travellers and have come to expect better. So when we arrived home I wrote a polite email to the manager detailing our stay and that although we recognise that sometimes cleaners etc can overlook things and just wanted to let them know of our disappointment. We received no reply. So I wrote to their facebook page and inquired if we would get a reply regarding our email. The post was read but again we received no reply. Sorry , but for an establishment that seems to have most of the boxes ticked in a stunning setting and friendly helpful staff, you do not win any points for your inability to show respect to a customer who thought bringing these issues to your attention would help. Someone needs to pull their socks up.

A joke
Reviewed By MsWithnailWe were a largish party in need of three -- four double rooms in Kalmar and ended up here. We thought, having seen the pictures on line, that it would be a sweet, romantic little getaway with turn-of the century charm. We have never been more wrong. Somebody gutted the place sometime in the seventies or eighties, and replaced all the old-world charm with plastic and cheap wallpaper. It looked and felt like some sort of boy scout cabin from 1976 inside. People were very ticked off! Someone in our party actully tried to get another hotel, but there wasn't any. Not really a hotel, but a couple of poor rooms, upstair from a pizza place. And very hard to access if you're not young and agile. One member of our party has a bad leg and it was agony for him to get up and down the stairs. There was some kind of awful service elevator but that was clearly not for the guests convenience.
