The Fantasy-Worthy Grand Finale To Our Irish Trip

Reviewed By Aslanschild2

My husband and I could not have afforded to stay at the Ashford Castle, but we found ourselves magically able to book, around two months before we left home in the U. S., the “Lord and Lady Ardilaun Traditional Afternoon Tea” for the afternoon of May 27. We drove several hours out of our way just for this event, at the end of a two-week driving trip around Ireland. Was it worth it? You bet. It was AMAZING. First of all, with no visitors allowed without bookings, it was so cool to drive up to the Ashford Castle entrance and be recognized, by name, by the red-and-gold liveried Guard of the Gates, and then ceremoniously ushered through the massive gates and across the River Moat Bridge, to a parking spot right by the front entrance of the Castle. We felt like royalty! Next, we were able to walk around the castle interior for a while before our tea, and take as many pictures as we liked. It truly is a spectacular place. Then—the tea! WOW!!!! We had been asked in advance if we had any dietary restrictions, mentioned that we were pescatarians, and when our waiter approached our table, he greeted us by name and knew already this dietary preference. We were stunned. But what followed was even more stunning. The elegant table service, the delicate pastries and delicious sandwiches, the meticulous presentation, the venue—a spectacular tea room with views out over the Great Lawn, the Fountain Royale, and beautiful Lough Corrib beyond—everything was straight out of the best kind of fairy tale. We were utterly charmed. There was never any rush to move us through; instead, our waiter let us linger long past the meal itself over our English teas and scrumptious lemon, berry, and chocolate desserts, savoring the entire unbelievable experience. No one else in attendance seemed to be in any hurry, either, so we did not feel out of order. On leaving, our wonderful waiter Thomas, now more like a friend, graciously followed us out and gave us a small rundown on the history of the castle and the solid gold table service on display in the tea room’s elegant ante-room. From there, our day just got better and better. Wandering the grounds and the gardens with no crowds was a special treat; I’m guessing everyone there was probably feeling the same specialness and privilege, even the staff. When I asked the ordinarily sober and decorous Doorman if he enjoyed his job, he couldn’t help but enthuse about the many years he has been doing it, beaming as if he were The Doorman to the Queen. He does his job just as if he were. As the afternoon wore on, we found ourselves at some distance from the Castle itself, immersed in enjoyment of some far-flung but equally exquisite garden, when a dapper-looking gentleman happened by in a riding cart and asked us if we needed anything. I joked that the only thing that could possibly make our day more perfect would be if my husband could play a late round of golf on the Castle’s spectacular nine-hole golf course. “Do you have clubs?” was the immediate reply, as the man sized up my husband. “No,” my husband stammered, uncharacteristically abashed. “Well, I happen to be the Golf Manager, and I can get you fixed up with some clubs, if you’re serious about playing. There’s just still time.” And so it happened that we found ourselves on a limpid afternoon out on the deserted greens of Ashford Castle, with spectacular views at every turn of the castle and the lake—my husband playing and I walking the course with him, taking pictures to my heart’s delight. Need I say more? If you are fortunate enough to snag such reservations, don’t hesitate. I’ve also heard that the rooms at the Ashford Castle Lodge are not as expensive as in the Castle itself; maybe next time. We sure do hope there’s a next time, but whether we come back or not (we are both up in years), we will be savoring this day for the rest of our lives. A great big Thank You to all involved. You are dream makers, and you made ours come true.

Hostel is modern with good facilities – common kitchen and dining room well equipped, spacious and properly serviced. Lounge available, with showings of The Quiet Man Movie each evening. Room was basic, but clean and comfortable enough. En-suite was clean and functional – good shower. Common washrooms looked modern, clean and properly serviced. Staff very welcoming and helpful. Free WiFi – a bit erratic at times. Good laundry facilities. On-site parking. Excellent value for money at Euro 35 / night for double room.
