A rainbow assortment of palafitos (wooden houses on stilts) are the unofficial calling card of Castro, the capital city of Chiloé Island. Once home to thousands of farmers and a target for European pirates, Castro was established in the 16th century and is Chilé’s third-oldest city. Highights here are the astonishing wooden church, an impressive contemporary art museum and the charming wharf in the Gamboa district.

Good hotel to go in Castro, but needs renovations

Reviewed By viajandoatodoslados

The hotel is perfectly well located in the South side of Castro (avoiding the high congestion of the city), and it has great views .... also the restaurant of the hotel is actually excellent ... the food we tried was spectacular. However, there some points that need attention: 1) Staff shortages ... we suffered it because we didn't get our room until 7pm on the day of arrival .. which was actually very late .... also, one day our room was not made until very late as well, after several conversations with Reception. 2) We have 2 rooms ... in one of them, there was no fridge to cool drinks ... in the second one we didn't get any complimentary bottle of water ... 3) not all rooms have air conditioning (something we learned the hard way in the first night) but luckily we were able to move to other room .... 4) the accessories in the room were missing or were broken ... the toilet paper hanger was loose, the sink was clogged and you needed to be careful no to wet all the room. Evidently there were small reparations that they have not done in several years ... and they are not expensive things, but it appears there is a lack of maintenance in the hotel 5) Staff looked "bored" ... not all of them, but you can sense they were working not with a very big smile ... and definitely they need more people to cater for the guests !

Palafito Waiwen

"Palafito Waiwen", located at the heart of Gamboa neighborhood in the city of Castro, Island of Chiloe. Here you can enjoy a unique experience of staying in one of the traditional houses on stilts above the calm waters of the bay of Castro near the Gamboa estuary with its particular Chilean southern warmth and surrounded by the exceptional beauty of its landscapes and people.

Nice.

On a quieter street, just outside of the main part of Castro yet near a few shops and decent restaurants, this is a good choice if you're willing to walk/drive to the main sites. A 20-minute walk uphill to the church will get you to the centre of Castro, allowing 'Waiwen' to feel a bit more private. Breakfast is simple but nice; the setting is picturesque on a stilted "palafito" that Castro is known for; hosts are helpful (especially Juan!) and welcoming. A solid 4+ for 'Waiwen' I would recommend staying here.

Not worthy, never again

Much better options in Castro. Dated hotel, small and saturated parking. Praise you are not blocked by another car and if you do that they are able to find the owner. Breakfast is very basic and starts too late for early birds (7.30). If you're foreign, at checkout, remember to ask the invoice in USD. Does not matter if you presented the immigration paper, passport and the address you have is from another country. If you do not specifically ask for the invoice they will happily charge you 19% VAT. This is the first and only time something like this happened to me in a Chilean hotel. Room, small and very basic. Fridge locked Shower, can only be appreciated if you are into claustrophobic experiences. Will decently book another hotel on my next trip to Castro.

Unique location over the water

Reviewed By h0lidaylady

We stayed two nights here. It was really good to experience staying in a traditional Chiloé building on stilts over the water with a view. The apartments are reasonably spacious, but might be cramped for more than 2 people. The bed was really comfy although the linen unironed. Lots of towels provided. The WiFi was a little erratic. There are a few restaurants and cafes in the same row of palafitos or you can walk up the hill into town. There is a kitchenette and plenty of cooking supplies. The kitchenette was not sparklingly clean but overall the apartment was in good shape and we loved the stay.

Good value, not walking distance from town centre

Reviewed By Travelover_aeg

We liked it, probably would stay again if we came back. Good value! The rooms were spacious and the bathrooms looked clean. The breakfast was good with bread, ham, cheese, coffee/tea and jam. The hotel is not close to the city centre so if you don’t have a vehicle, it might be inconvenient to get to. Our only complaints is that: 1) the rooms are a bit chilly, it takes some time to warm up and 2) they have a kitchen but it can’t be used by guests, so you can only bring prepared foods or foods that do not require cooking.

Overcharged by 90%

Reviewed By Angela M

I was charged almost double the published rate for a 5 night stay and was refused a refund when I requested it. Upon check in, I paid a flat amount and was not given an itemized bill or receipt. When I researched the published rate, I discovered the discrepancy in what I paid. The owner said the additional charge was for breakfast and cleaning, which was not included in the standard rate. I explained I was not given the option to decline those services. Also, I was charged the 19% tax that does not apply to me, as I am traveling on a tourist visa. The owner refused to refund this tax or make any other compensation for the amount she overcharged me. In fact, she was very rude and defensive. On top of this, we were given the worst room on the property, with only a very narrow terrace that did not even have room for a chair. Also note, the noise of barking dogs is constant, day and night.

Charming Hotel in Picturesque Setting

This is a delightful boutique hotel in one of Castro’s historic palofitos - houses on stilts. The interior is modern, spacious, with lots of light wood while preserving the character of the original. Our comfortable, well appointed room had a superb view over the estuary. The hotel staff were extremely helpful and attentive, solving a problem for us with our travel agent about the timing of a tour and allowing us a slightly delayed check out. Highly recommended

Stayed for 10 days and really enjoyed our stay . Opposite the beach and very close to Old Town so position was perfect . Poor rooms though and the pictures of rooms are very old because they certainly don't look like that now and definitely need another re-furb . Staff were nice , food was ok and views were lovely from the front balcony's . Would still consider returning because of the position and cost , but would like a redecorated slightly larger room and a tv with uk channels .
