Fawlty Towers meets The Ritz

Reviewed By Samuel P

This is one of the most difficult reviews I have given because there were so many contrary things. I'm relatively easy going and could live with most of them but my wife was tearing her hair out. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere and you really need a car although we had travelled there by train to a deserted station about 200 metres away. This, it turned out, exists only as a changing place for trains to various destinations. Don't worry though, they do not disturb your sleep. We were met by the chef/manager who showed us how beautiful, well appointed room which even included two variable height adjustable beds. Lovely clean bathroom and excellent internet connection. The chef, who was originally from the Punjab, insisted on cooking us a curry for dinner and it was delicious. It then took us from Friday evening until Sunday evening to manage to pay for it, not as we wanted on card but in cash because the owner did not want meals paid for on card. Staff just came and went and we waited for drinks for ages. On Saturday we asked what was the latest we could order dinner on Sunday and the chef told us he would cook at whatever time we wanted. When we turned up at around 7:00 he was away for the evening and the manager told us that the restaurant was closed. She said there was somewhere a couple of kilometres away but as we had no car we asked if she would order a pizza in for us. She agreed and asked if we would like salad to accompany it. A large bowl of salad came to the table and then a while after a beer stew arrived. Sunday night was a nightmare. We had room 11. This was right next to the laundry room and three washers and dryers were running until well after midnight. The noise was so bad that we had to get up and go for a walk to get some peace. To be fair when we complained in the morning the owner gave us a nice bottle of wine to take home but we were shattered after so little sleep.

Accommodations truly worth remembering --A Truly wonderful home-like feeling !!

Reviewed By W8156VCsamn

Just completed a trip to Brilon and Haus Rech in Germany. Was there to visit my family. The accommodations were truly PHANTASTIC. A did not expect such a warm welcome. At first, I stayed, in a corner room overlooking the old city gate and my ancestors' home, less than 110 yards away (I spent there much of my childhood. I believe I got this room out of courtesy (pleasing the arrival from the US). I requested a different room, as I am super-light sleeper. I was given probably the best room in the hotel. They made me feel welcomed like a king. I had several "small', personal favors to ask. All of them were granted, and not once, did I get the feeling I was a bother or asked too much. The rooms were impeccable, the room service awesome. The breakfast buffet was something else and Ms. Pohl, who served it most of the time, ... were just hard to describe (see pictures). The buffet was plentiful, a very tasty assortment of all sorts of delicious German breakfast items. The service rendered by Ms. Poh and even the owners, Mr. and Ms. Gartner, - just made me feel at home. It was an epic journey, as I had come back "home" to say my Goodbyes to several family members of 90 years old. Though a sweet-sour trip, the stay at the Haus Rech was my home base. Great food, most wonderful accommodations and mostly the feeling of being welcomed. Sam N.

Nice, adequate Hotel

Reviewed By Jorg R

Stayed here for the fifth time while visiting my mom in Brilon. The hotel is nice in a quite part of this little town. The rooms are clean and of average size by European standards. If however you visit during the summer and happen to be there during a heatwave, be advised that the only AC in the room is an open window. The restaurant in the hotel does no longer offer ala carte dining. They only offer buffet style dinners with about three predetermined main dishes. Other restaurants in the area are better suited for a good dinner though. The breakfast, also buffet style, is well worth your money. Large selection of German breads and rolls as well as German cold cuts and scrambled eggs and many other items make for a good start for the day. If you are looking for a king or queen bed in the rooms you will be disappointed. As is typical in many German hotels, a double bed is literally having 2 single beds next to each other. The biggest downside is the bad design of the shower. Half of the shower is open with no door or curtain or anything. The shower floor is seperated from the remaining bathroom by about 1/8th of an inch or 3 mm from the rest. Once you shower water almost immediately flows into the main bathroom soaking anything in its path. This is one of the most annoying bathroom designs I have ever encountered. The prevailing clientele are elderly tourists of the 50+ veriety with the odd young family with children included every once in a while. Overall a decent place if your travels take you that part of Germany that can be recommended but be aware of it's limitations.

Nice stay and everything was fine, the sauna was not working on our two visits but otherwise the hotel is very good and the restaurant excellent! Both times we were put on the top floor of the Annex about 50 meters from the hotel but it had a lift and the rooms were of a good size, no natural light in the bathrooms but they did have ventilation. A big bonus for us was that they kindly let us keep our car in the car park while we cycled for 3 days. I would stay here again.

Sehr individuelles Frühstück möglich, alles da, was es braucht. Sehr ruhige Lage in Fußgängerzone. Alles bestens! Kann das Hotel auf jeden Fall empfehlen!
