10 Hidden Gems Things to do in Cappadocia That You Shouldn't Miss

June 23, 2021 Matilde Konrad

Lying in south central Turkey, the moonscaped region of Cappadocia, southeast of Ankara, is most famous for unique geological features called fairy chimneys. The large, cone-like formations were created over time by erosion of the relatively soft volcanic ash around them. Past cultures have dug into them to create dwellings, castles (like Uchisar) and even entire underground cities like Kaymakli and Derinkuyu, used as hiding places by early Christians. Nearby Kayseri is the gateway to the area.

I was planning to Sultan Carpets after reading the reviews they had over here, and I was NOT disappointed. I was greeted by Ali and Mustafa the first day I got there, they first choice I have to make on their shop is between a Turkish tea, or an Apple tea. They talked me through the ranges of carpets types, qualities, and prices. He wasn't hesitated to unroll any of his carpets to give me choices of which one carpets suits me the best, the price are very very reasonable, InsyaAllah the carpets I got will suits the house really fine. Ali's English is exceptional, I know so many Turkish around Göreme speaks English but there is something different with him, turns out he spent time in America for 5 years which explains a lot, him and Mustafa were very honest about their business, they are very comfortable to talk to, a genuine carpet shop runs by genuine carpet lover persons. Me as a moslem brother is proud to see our brother have such dedication and honesty, a very good example of Turkish hospitality! I really wanna go back to Göreme, and with God's will if I do, I'll definitely visit Sultan Carpet again!

My parents and I first met Ruth in the early 2000s. Last spring during the midst of the pandemic, I worked via email with Ruth to select some kilim cushion covers for the house my husband and I had just moved into. The attached picture are a mix of some I purchased in 2015 during a visit to Turkey and some that were shipped to us during the pandemic. Online ordering was easy and secure, and shipping was fast. But nothing compares to actually visiting her store.

Wonderful experience this morning. Excellent ride, best service and very good value for the money. Mr Cemal was extremely nice and friendly. He provided very good assistants and watch dog. And he was following behind us to make sure all goes well. Even the watch dog was super attentive and going ahead and looking out for any danger. But of course there is no danger. Its very relaxing ride with amazing views. I highly recommend Cemal Ranch. He is super nice person.

Hattusa Handmade Ceramics

I was born in 1957 in Ankara. After finishing the high school, I studied and graduated from French Language and Literature. After working a short period of time as a teacher, in 1983, I changed my direction to tourism and commerce. After retirement, I started to get involved with ceramic arts, which is just when I found the pottery had become “corrupt” in my words; plates made of plaster painted with synthetic dyes everywhere… I decided to perform the art of “Cini” as it should be and started. While mastering my drawing and painting technique, I also excelled in drawing original Hittite figures on the plates. All my products are ' FREE HAND ' works. Since the Hittite figures are geometrical figures, I prefer pen filled with purified and thinned “cini” dye, instead of brush, to draw the figures. Since I only use Hittite figures, I chose the name of the shop Hattusa, which is the capital of Hittites.

Kervan Carpet & Kilim

Kervan Carpet & Kilim was established in 1978 by my father. We sell old and antique carpets woven in Anatolia in the same manner as they been have for centuries. Our source for these carpets is often from wedding dowries and those handed down from our ancestors. All carpets use natural vegetable dyes, unlike others sold commercially which are not of good quality.

My family loves to travel. Some of our favorite things about traveling to a new country are meeting its people, learning about the culture and, of course, trying their food. How could we pass up an opportunity to do all 3 along with learning to cook some regional specialties in a local family’s home. We heard about Cappadocia Home Cooking from our hotel owner so we booked a cooking class for my wife, daughter and myself. What we got was a chance to hangout with 3 generations of a Turkish family and cook with them in their kitchen, which has been modified to conduct classes. Tolga Duran and his family are charming, fun and informative and we had a great time getting to know them and learning some local recipes. Our class and then dinner lasted about 3 hours. You can be as hands on in the class as you choose to be and best of all you get to eat all of your creations, as well as some of theirs, afterwards. We highly recommend the experience.

Derinkuyu Yeralti Sehri

At one time up to 20,000 people lived in this underground city carved 18 storeys deep into the Cappadocia earth. Today, 8 floors of rooms, tunnels and passageways are open for public viewing.

If you want a unique experience, then any of Cappadocia's underground cities will fill the bill. The fact that Derinkuyu exists at all is amazing. I highly recommend it... just watch your head, as many of the passageways are so small you have to bend over in half to get through. Not for the claustrophobic or faint of heart.
