Inca Bridge

Gosh I don’t understand the negative reviews. This is a spectacular hike, a once in a lifetime! You hike part of the world famous Inca Trail and walk on a path built by Incas. They would send their people with their local goods to the bridge where they would trade their goods for other’s good. The first part is steep and will provide some good cardio and the rest is mostly flat with INCREDIBLE views. Solid granite mountains and views to the river. We saw every age group and it wasn’t crowded but we are here in the rainy season. Two days here and it rained for five minutes. Blessed.

Bridge of Sighs

Shaded with flowering trees, this secluded romantic walkway leads under a wooden bridge to a cliff with sweeping views of the ocean.

Originally built almost 150 years ago, then destroyed during the Pacific War (with Chile) 4 years after, and rebuilt again, the Puente de Los Suspiros is one of the most important and well recognized tourist landmarks of Barranco district. The bridge offers good views to the neighboring area including the church Iglesia La Ermita and a part of the Pacific Ocean (both on the left), the picturesque narrow street, or rather pathway, all the way down, Bajada de los Baños, small cafes and graffiti below, Parque de la Cruz right in front of you, and the statue, on the right, of Chabuca Granda (1920-1983), the great Peruvian singer of música criolla who immortalized the location in her eponymous 1960 song (the singer statue also features an equestrian memorial to her close friend, José-Antonio Lavalle, the heir of the prominent family and a great advocate of Peruvian agriculture). The local tradition says, that upon stepping on the bridge for the first time ever, if you cross it entirely without taking a single breath, your wishes come true. Even though a dedicated visit to the Bridge of Sighs may not impress you that much, but usually such visit would necessarily include a tour in Barranco, and thus is highly recommended. We have visited the bridge both during the day and at night, and would suggest you choose the nighttime when the location, well illuminated and somewhat magical, takes on a more festive appearance.

Inca Bridge

Reviewed By davidbK4897CY - Novi, United States

From the guardhouse at Machu Picchu, it was about a 20 minute walk slightly uphill to the bridge. Compared to the main part of the site, this area had few tourists. The path is wide enough for my daugher in law to not have her usual problem with heights. The photographic views of the main site were great and well worth the walk. Overall, this was the most enjoyable area of Machu Picchu. It gave a good impression of walking the Inca Trail and the ingenuity of the Inca's in making their site defensible by simple methods.

Crossing this bridge over the Chili river is nice, because on one side you have the riverine city of Arequipa, and on the other the Chilina valley and Selva Alegre park.
