10 Bodies of Water in Northern Territory That You Shouldn't Miss

January 5, 2022 Mikaela Didonna

The Northern Territory (abbreviated as NT) is a federal Australian territory in the central and central northern regions of Australia. It shares borders with Western Australia to the west (129th meridian east), South Australia to the south (26th parallel south), and Queensland to the east (138th meridian east). To the north, the territory is bordered by the Timor Sea, the Arafura Sea and the Gulf of Carpentaria. Despite its large area—over 1,349,129 square kilometres (520,902 sq mi), making it the third largest Australian federal division—it is sparsely populated. The Northern Territory's population of 244,000 (2016) makes it the least populous of Australia's eight major states and territories, having fewer than half as many people as Tasmania.

Sandy Creek

Reviewed By Jmwg51 - Darwin, Australia

Best fall in Litchfield hands down. Simply stunning. Drive in is doable in a 2WD SUV assuming it is dry. Not sure if legal - but doable. Campsites are lovely and shaded with huge firepits and grills at every site. Honour system so take some cash. The walk in is around 2kms and SHOES and plenty of water are a MUST. The walk us NOT for elderly or physically diabsled as there are some steep climb sections. Toddlers will need piggy backing some of the way, Beautiful bushland changes from dense scrub to luch rainforest and you are next to the creek most of the way in. The falls and pool are simply sublime and much less crowded than Wangi. A must if you are in a 4wd and relatively fit . Take a picnic and make a day of it....

Jim Jim Falls

Spectacular all year - see this area from the ground in the dry season, and from the air in the wet season. The Jim Jim Area is only accessible by 4WD during the dry season. Visitors can explore the spectacular and challenging walks or take a boat shuttle ride to Twin Falls over crystal clear waters (charges apply). Scenic flights are also very popular, and allow visitors to see the spectacular Jim Jim Falls, which are in full flow only during the wet season

This was worth the trek over large rocks and boulders. The kids in our group are 9 and 12, capable of climbing and jumping and had fun. When we reached the end it was spectacular and half our group entered the freezing water!! Water was clear and inviting after the trek and cooled our feet. We would love to see this in the wet season! There was only a small tickle of water coming down from the top.

A fantastic spot to camp overnight and go to the gorge in the morning. One of our favourites spots in the area. There was no one else there which made it quite special.

This is one of the best walks if you don't want to do the whole base walk. On your way in to the waterhole you get to see caves with rock art and history and then you can sit peacefully and listen to the birds at the waterhole. We visited this site on our base walk and returned days later when the sky darkened and we hoped there might be rain....to see the waterfalls would be absolutely incredible. Unfortunately, we only got a couple of drops as Uluru seemed to repel all the clouds in the sky that day.

If you're visiting friends or family in Darwin get them to take you here for a picnic, or cook up a BBQ.... it has a lovely relaxed atmosphere, and is a safe place for the kids to swim, the Cool Spot Cafe is close by if you wanted to have a coffee or meal, and the views are just lovely...a great spot if you own a canoe or kayak..loads of fun to be had.
