10 Bed and Breakfast Inns in Auckland: Best hotel deals for 2023

May 30, 2023 Jacquiline Delozier

The Māori call Auckland Tāmaki Makaurau — a maiden desired by 100 lovers, and a valuable territory fought over for centuries for its fertile land and natural harbors on the Pacific Ocean (to the east) and Tasman Sea (to the west). Today, it’s New Zealand’s largest city: A vibrant and diverse place where nature and urban life go hand-in- hand, with 48 volcanic cones, more than 50 islands, and 29,000 km of coastline and beaches just minutes away from the arts and shopping of the central city.

John is a great host and has restored this home to its former glory and I commend him for saving it from being knocked down for a multi storey modern replacement. In the city's old quarter, it is five mins walk to Queen St and the University. A fantatsic place to stay for those that want genuine heritage.

Quiet location, with lovely rooms, spacious common areas and a very good breakfast. Very friendly, good place to relax and yet a short walk from great restaurants and shops on Ponsonby road. Highly recommended for those that like homely accommodation rather than hotels.

Plume Villas

Stunning property but the service needs some work....

Reviewed By 45samuely

A really amazing property with a beautiful outlook while the villas themselves have been finished to a really high standard. Very clean and warm and perfect for a weekend away. We could not fault the actual accommodation. I had heard previous reports about the managers and their 'transactional' disposition and I have to agree - this aspect desperately needs some work. When we arrived it was as though the manager was doing US a favour by checking us in and taking our money and she seemed very cold and almost disgruntled we had interrupted her. There were numerous other instances where we encountered this 'disposition' and, to be quite honest, it is unacceptable in this current environment. Not to mention the fact these villas are not cheap so I would expect more warmth from the hosts. As mentioned, we had 4 or 5 instances where things were just 'off' and we just felt we were an inconvenience to the whole operation despite things being relatively quiet around the complex. Lastly, the villas need a small oven or, preferably, a BBQ to really round it all off.

The Salty Dog Inn

Just a short drive from Auckland, set against the beautiful backdrop of Snells Beach, the Salty Dog Inn is a coastal hideaway of rare quality. A relaxing and delicious dinner setting with a unique interior style, the entire dining room ceiling is decorated with antique beer jugs - a great conversation starter for sure. With menus reflecting seasonal local produce, the restaurant cuisine is inspired by the old local Mahurangi River Winery. Make a day of the stunning location once you have wined and dined, and visit the beautiful surrounding beaches, or something slightly further afield, Matakana and its famous markets just ten minutes down the road, or popular spots such as Omaha and Goat Island

The accomodation was good, wouldn’t recommend the dinner.

The bangers and mash meal was $20 and included 3 pre cooked hellers sausage, very disappointing. For meals you at least get proper sausages. The accomodation side of it didn’t have any issues with, clean and roomy.

Needs complete overhall

As a family, we have been coming to this motel for over ten years on at least an annual basis, sometimes 2 or 3 times a year. We have generally enjoyed our week long stays. Thebeach view and the general location, close to shops, restaurants etc are the main reasons we keeps returning to this accommodation. However, on this occasion (a trans Tasman bubble trip), we were bitterly disappointed. We have noticed that over time, the motel has embraced obvious cost cutting measures to its detriment. Firstly, the general state of the room and the hotel grounds was below par: The carpets were stained and grubby; the clock didn't work; a catch on the bathroom window was loose; the front sliding door needed new rollers. It was very difficult to open; the beds are uncomfortable; the carparks are too narrow, uneven and dangerous when getting out of cars; servicing of the room was adequate but our sheets were not changed in the 8 days we were there - this normally happens every 4th day; the light outside our room which should come automatically in the dark did not work, so when we departed in the pitch black of an early morning I nearly fell 4 feet of the ledge carrying a heavy suitcase.Very dangerous. The steps themselves are too steep for older folk and children. Also, it came to our attention while we were there, that this motel is an MDS motel, that is to say that it houses some homeless people. ( A Covid measure). That in itself, I have no issue with. What is concerning si that this was never disclosed at any time. I now realise that we were considerably overcharged for what we received. Perhaps that is why the owners don't bother with maintenance. Air BNBs in the same area are half the price. On a previous stay, we stayed in the same unit and at 1.30am water started pooring through the light in the bedroom ceiling; the light detached from the ceiling, sparking as it spun around the room and the ceiling started collapsing from the weight of the water. We got saturated. As it turned out, the water was leaking from the laundry in the unit above. This motel is very poorly maintained and consequently dangerous. Clearly, the owners don't give a stuff. Only after the money. And by the way, if you choose to stay in a unit with garden views, be aware there is no garden. We will never stay here again. On a more positive note, the popular restaurant down the road, "Bucks Bistro" is welcoming and serves really good and interesting food. Highly recommend that one. But no recommendation for the state of Bucklands Beach Waterfront Motel.

Marlene and Tony are friendly, warm, kind and caring hosts. The B&B is beautiful from the outside and inside. The interior decor is grand, luxurious and super comfy. The attention to detail is impeccable - iincluding little bowls of chocolate treats.. I stayed in The Cream Room and felt like a queen. The room is luxed up and the bathroom is like a spa retreat.. Loved meeting the fur babies - Pippa the spoodle dog and Louie the cat. They are very friendly and well behaved. The B&B is picture perfect - well maintained and super clean. The garden at the back of the B&B is beautiful and a great place to escape and relax. There is street parking which is convenient and free. The supermarket, restaurants and service stores are an easy 5 minute walk to and from the B&B. I highly recommend the Eden Park Bed & Breakfast. 100% lux experience.
