Reviewed By chicken-suess-sauercurently allows (and also welcomes) foreigners Jacky's guest house is definitely my #1 choice for Yuanyang. First of all, he was extremely friendly and a great host. The hotel is nice, not busy and you get everything you need. In Winter it's cold at night but there are electric blankets on the beds so it's ok. Second of all, Jacky is a great (also well-traveled) guide for the region. we received a map he just drew for us and gave us detailed hiking instructions, identifying the best hike for us based on the current weather. We wouldn't have had such a great experience in the area if it wasn't for his guidance. Thoroughly enjoyed the trip and the region. Great hostel with low budget options and gorgeous views for the upscale
Reviewed By HolistrWe stayed in this place for 3 nights while visiting the yunyang rice terrace fields. It was out of season so there were not many guests and very limited opportunity for catering. In this hostel, they have a small kitchen to cook simple food if necessary. But we were going to the place a few dozen meters down the hill in a coowned hostel to eat. They had a big kitchen - but the food was so so. Laundry service provided. Free wi-fi. 1. getting to this place is no easy walk. There are dozens of stairs in narrow walkways and is impossible to get there by car. You have to leave it at the parking lot up the hill. 2. The staff picked us up at the parking lot at around 6 AM. Kudos. 3. It had the best lounge area I have seen in a long time. I really liked it and we enjoyed to hang out in that part. - there are board games, instruments and card games on shelves you can borrow and play with friends. We had our own RPG ADnD adventure to enjoy in this cozy environment. 5. English speaking owner!! The guy is from Kunming. His whole family sent him over to yunyang to make this business successful and provide revenue. Very helpful and accommodating. He even brought us coffee from another place in the middle of the night. 6. The owner took us to the best morning view over the terraces without the crowds. Definitely would choose it again if staying in yunyang.

Run down, dirty and expensive
Reviewed By beaverdam7The location of this place is just ok, compared to other options in the Pugao village. The view from this hostel is mostly obstructed. Even climbing to the roof of the hostel, the view of the rice terraces are far away and tucked behind of tall buildings down the village. The room was cold, small, run down and was not cleaned very well especially the bathroom. The bathroom was too tiny for comfortably taking shower and shower head was installed right next to the toilet so everything will be wet for long time. Mold was growing on the tiles due to the lack of cleaning and being wet all the time. Old towels provided are made of thin synthetic micro fiber and did not smell clean. There are visible black mold growing in it and I wished I had my own towel! The owner spoke good English, but she was not around most of the times and when she was at hostel she would start every conversation with "so can you pay me for ---?" - not a good feeling to be begged instead of greetings! Her vibe was definitely about taking advantage of non-chinese speaking travelers who do not have many information about the area. She was a bit greedy and cagey and didn't want to give much information about the near by villages or how to get there. Rather she wanted to make more money by offering her own driving to get around. Once I turned down her offer because there are many public shared vans connecting the villages, then her attitude turned cold. Over all, very expensive for what you get. There seemed to be many better options around this village.

Probably the best kept secret in Yuanyang
Reviewed By Jay LSeeing the reviews on Tripadvisor for Yuanyang, we were prepared for lousy lodging and meals for this trip. Fortunately, we chance upon this inn. The location is EXCELLENT. Situated near the designated Duoyishu (多依树) viewing platform, the view from the inn is spectacular on its own, allowing us to enjoy it at the comfort of the room balcony. Being on top and at the edge of the mountain slope, the surrounding was also peaceful throughout the day. Occasionally, a few villagers would pass by with their livestocks making it such a tranquil scene. The "Sky-view room" (星空房) at the fifth floor was very comfortable and had a luxury feel to it. Spotting a glass ceiling, we can draw the curtains and gaze the night sky. The power sockets were travel friendly and we didn't need to use an adaptor. The WiFi router was also in the room so connection was strong and fast. The bed is the hard type but comfortable and equipped with heated bedding so it was very cosy. Water pressure is good and hot water is available 24h. One thing to note is that there is limited privacy for the toilet in this room type as part of it consist of a glass wall and glass door without curtains. The room was on the small side but adequate for us. Outside the room is a huge private balcony (shared with one other room) with sofas and tables, a great place to chill while enjoying the view. Breakfast is provided and the key thing here (at least for us) was that they serve GOOD coffee. The lady (Xiao Long) who manages the inn was an avid coffee drinker herself and kindly shared her stash with us. We had freshly grounded Ethiopia coffee beans brewed using Kalita wave. Breakfast was a simple fare of eggs, bread and rice porridge with on demand top-ups. The rice used was produced locally called hong-mi (红米) and carefully chosen by the management. They also serve dinner and the menu is dependent on local fresh produce available. Xiao Long was also a very good cook and we had all our dinners here. If you drink, they have home brewed liquor using a local fruit. Unfortunately, the management is busy in the day maintaining the inn so they do not provide lunch. To get here, you will need to walk along a stone pavement which entrance I thought was slightly obscure. Fortunately, the inn's boss was very friendly and walked out to fetch us. So I suggest calling him once you reach the village. Overall, the stay was really good and was pleasantly surprised by this find. An additional thought for your consideration. This scenery here is completely dependent on the weather. While this attraction is doable in 2 days, I would suggest more. This would allow re-visits to major sites at different times of the day to re-explore and get the best experience. While Duoyishu is recommended only for sunrise, my experience with Duoyishu during sunset was better than that at Tiger's Mouth or Bada. The rice terraces reflected the colours better than those areas during sunset as the sun backlit the scene. Important, if you intend to stay more than 2 days or re-visit any of the three designated viewing platforms you will need to get the weekly pass (周票) at RMB180 instead of the two day pass at RMB100.
