Classy Cotswolds cottage in real rural setting

Reviewed By Jes C

This beautifully maintained old stone cottage in a green and truly rural setting offers not only comfortable accomodation but also excellent food. The dinner menu is rich, the food tasty and only surpassed by a sumptuous breakfast hybrid of a large self-service buffet and a served, full English breakfast, which ranks higher than most as it is based on first class raw materials and not swimming in fat/grease. The rooms are spacious, the beds and downs are the best you can get - all placed in a picturesque square courtyard stone building. Staff are friendly and helpful. Not the cheapest accomodation around but worth every penny.

Disappointed

Reviewed By ExcaliUk

From the outside the hotel does feel slightly neglected, and in much need of a makeover. However it’s the inside that counts and I can make do with a tired exterior if the rooms are okay. Unfortunately that tired, desperately needing a bit of TLC extends to the room we were in. Yes it was clean and the bed comfortable but the room was drab and in need of some colour. The skirting board and the bottom of the door frame in the bathroom was rotten where water has escaped from the shower. As a result the paint had blistered and just added to the drab run down appearance. We had booked the buffet breakfast at £9.50, and Oh what a mistake this was. The continental part was fine as you can’t really go wrong with cereal, fruit, and yogurt. What really let’s it down is the cooked, and I use this term lightly as the eggs were just like rubber and the yolks had been set by, I’m assuming the heating lights above them. The bacon was of the texture of cupboard and cold. Cold was a bit of a theme as so we’re the mushrooms, sausages, etc. The black pudding was just a soggy mess… Come on it can’t be hard to get a simple fry up correct like lots of other hotels we’ve stayed in. The only saving grace were the staff who were friendly and helpful. All in all not the best of experiences and would not recommend to others!

Improving rapidly!

Reviewed By Chilaili

This was our second stay after a 3-year gap. It’s nice to see that The Fleece seems to be doing very well after lockdown and what is definitely a difficult time for the hospitality industry. Goodness knows they were packed for Sunday lunch! The first time we stayed was in the unfortunate room #4 which I hope has since been extensively renovated because that really was a disaster. This time we had a room right at the back of the hotel which was great for lack of noise from the bar or outside. The room is cosy but the bathroom is large. The bathroom has clearly been updated and the shower large enough to walk around in. It’s unfortunate that whoever did the shower apparently forgot to include a shelf or shower caddy for soap and shampoo! Leaving them on the shower floor is a pain because not everyone can bend down that easily. The staff are friendly and very accommodating and we enjoyed our stay very much.

Talk about a room upgrade...

Reviewed By ianpress

THERE are room upgrades and there is... an upgrade from a snug double to something you could hold a dance in while thinking you'd been teleported back to an Elizabethan castle. So, thank you all at The Harcourt Arms for turning a much anticipated two night break into something resembling a dream, complete with copper bath in the bedroom, four poster bed and enough sofas and chairs to keep a cricket team comfy. There are, thankfully, enough modern touches to make a present day guest happy too, from separate - and beautifully warmed - bathroom with walk-in shower - to decently punchy wi-fi signal and plenty of power points to top up your mobile phone. Site the Blenheim suite in a building which had obviously had a great deal spent on it these last few years and pop it down in a quiet Oxfordshire village and the building blocks for a happy visit are very much in place. The staff were charming and helpful, even when under pressure from a very well attended charity pub quiz evening and could not have made our visit run more smoothly. A couple of points to note: the pub quiz in the crowded bar below created quite a racket in our bedroom above, but was ended in good time to let those above get to sleep - and make sure you ask for your breakfast eggs to be fried, or face the chance of two boiled eggs in their own eggcups on the plate beside an otherwise excellent full English... Will be return? You bet, and with fingers and toes crossed for an extraordinary upgrade.

1-Star hotel at best

Reviewed By JSY_PaulP

I can not even begin to explain how terrible this supposedly 4-star hotel is, in fact it was so bad we only stayed for about 1hour before checking out and leaving. Sticking with the facts, check in was painless and easy. We were went to our room, which quite frankly was appalling, wall-paper and paint was peeling off the walls in the corridor, and the carpet was stained and dirty. We got to the room, and there was wall paper peeling off the walls, the room was filthy... not just dirty but mouldy and the carpet was caked in ground in dirt. So we headed back down to reception, as there was no phone in the room. We were then shown to another room, which was only marginally better, if slightly smaller than the first room, before also being offered a suite, that was right up in the eaves, which whilst bigger was set-up as a double, and whilst they offered to split the bed into twins bed the low ceilings would have cause us difficulty in moving around. As we were both exhausted we opted for the second room. So we get in the room and I go to jump in the shower, the bathroom was not clean, the shower was incredibly hard to turn on, once it turned on the water was scalding hot, so i turned it down, unfortunately it then went from scaling to freezing. cue turning the temperature up slowly bit by bit, finally found a temperature that was comfortable, after a few minutes in the shower the temperature then went freezing again and nothing i could do would improve the temperature. So jumped out of the shower, and tried to turn off the shower. Now i couldn't turn off the shower. Phoned down to reception, and after about 5 mins, a person turned up to turn the shower off, so we requested the general manager, who arrived shortly afterward. Unfortunately no other rooms were available, and so rather than stay we opted to leave and try to find somewhere else. We were promised that no charge would be made to our card, however the following day the hotel then attempted to charge us for our stay. Thankfully we caught it early and raised a dispute with the CC so avoided any charges. On a separate point, we logged into the hotel wifi to try and find another place to stay at late notice, only to find that coverage in the room we had been provided was extremely poor and so we couldn't even connect half the time. The only silver lining of our visit to this hotel is that after leaving we did find the most amazing little pub/hotel. Safe to say I will never be opting to stay here again, and i'll recommend to my friends to stay away too, just too terrible!

Nice stay

Reviewed By sstewa412844

Beautiful location with a fantastic little pub across from the hotel . A great spot for walks and not too far from nearby villages . The staff were friendly and helpful . The Room we had was quite small but was overlooking stream and had a nice outdoor area complete with log fire with marshmallows provided in the fridge so that was nice. Breakfast was nice as was the upstairs bar area but we couldn't get any proper food at 10pm even via room service once kitchen closed which was a bit disappointing . You need to book to use the pool so that's not great but overall we enjoyed the stay .

Disappointed

Reviewed By karenmoir22

We have just arrived home after a weekend at the Blue Boar. There was no warm welcome. We were told where our room was - on the top floor. A member of staff pushed past us on the stairs, not offering to hold door open or help. Got to room, which seemed fine, until I visited the bathroom. Somebody had used the toilet, left it in a mess, and it hadn't been cleaned. Total put off. My husband had to clean the toilet before we could use it. There was no hot water on the first day, and very little on the second. It was extremely noisy both outside, and in. Obviously this is not the hotels fault, but if you want a nice quiet break, give here a miss. This is our third visit, so I'm not sure what has happened, but we certainly won't be back. £320 for no sleep and no wash facilities. Had to go to my son's for a bath.
