Both a charming seaside town and the setting of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula,” Whitby is a place of paradox where families and vampire hunters rub shoulders at the beach and among the Gothic ruins of Whitby Abbey.

Breakfast was great with lots of choice, some self service with main dish and toast brought to the table. Staff were helpful and friendly, would definitely stay here again.

Well worth a visit

Reviewed By Peter b

My wife and I climbed the 199 steps and noticed the cafe sign pointing into the Youth Hostel. They offer a good choice of snacks and home cakes with hot drinks and if you're lucky a view down over Whitby. The staff were pleasant and welcoming and the cafe was clean. It's a long time since I was hosteling but it's great to see the new side to them. Wheelchair accessible. Well worth a visit.

Great staff shame about everything else

Reviewed By XXXXXXPE

The real shame about this hotel, is the total waste of fantastic staff. The room whilst clean (and to be fair the bed is comfortable) is worse than basic and only good for a single nights stay, as there is no where to put any clothes, so you have to live out of your case, that can only be stored on the floor. There was 1 large towel and 1 small towel in the bathroom (the room was booked for 2 people,) and the fan in the bathroom was laboured and chunky. Where this hotel really looses out however is the food. Chips are like dried cardboard (very cheap frozen ) and most (battered cod, ok, but that was all) of the food we had over 2 meals was bland and tasteless. Marstons may claim that this is a budget hotel, and at £90 per night it I suppose it could be deemed so, however it really is not worth that amount. I recommend you only stay here as a last resort, for one night, and eat somewhere else.

Nice enough but not worth the money

We paid £134 for one night and I was expecting something really nice. The room was ok if a little small. We overlooked a side alley and, as I expected we were woken by revellers at closing time using it as a toilet. The breakfast was ok and the staff were very nice but I won’t rush back.

Cosy, friendly, good location

Reviewed By reshairfan

The Saxonville doesn't look like much from the outside, and is a bit dated inside, but it's in a great location in quiet West Cliff very close to the beach promenade, yet still convenient to the hubbub of Whitby. Other than trendy Pizza West nearby, it seems the only place to have dinner is the Saxonville's restaurant, which I did after returning late from a full day out on a Sunday when other places were closed. My room was very comfortable, with a good desk and excellent lighting in the bathroom. The staff, without exception, were great. The included breakfast was very good, with table service. I liked that they have single occupancy rooms which suited my purposes. Would definitely stay there again.

The room was lovely and spacious and clean and was in a perfect location. We will definitely be back, cannot recommend The Horngarth enough! Thank you Emma & Antony for making our trip so special.

We stayed 3 nights in this place and I must say all was really good! The hosts were super nice and friendly. The place is clean and tidy and quite old fashion which makes it look more interesting. I like the fact you select what breakfast you want and the time you want and next morning they will bring it to your room door (no food wasted which is a bonus). They also made some adjustments on the breakfast menu for me which was really nice! From this place is a 5 min walk from Pannett Park and Cinder track and a 10-12 min walk to the city centre, so really good location. Free parking also. Really happy and recommend this place!
